I've been writing for quite some time on this other site, and the views on everything I've posted there combined don't equal the number I've gotten so far on Forward. Funny how that works sometimes.
I feel that this is because you're far more likely to catch a person in the mood to read a short one-shot than you are to see them wanting to get into a series (and an incomplete one, at that).
The amount of attention a given fic receives seems, to me, to based primarily on WIZARDRY.

Ravensdagger. That is because the current system is biased against shortfics. Before, it updated when you uploaded a new chapter, so FimFiction was biased towards long adventures and whatnot. Ever since the update, have you noticed how much easier it is just to make a ton of shortfics and try to get each one feathered instead?

I have the odd suspicion that the second I send the message to EqD that Steam Gears is complete It'll be flooded with readers... Darn, still a dozen chapters away from the ending.
Hey man. Trust me, I know the feeling. My first fic was Undead Equestria. 69,000 words. views, 200. More recent fic. Wrong Hospital Niko Bellic. Words, 25,000. Views, 3,000. I spent a whole day and a half writing wrong hospital as a, "well-I-don't-see-why-not." Then i wake up in the morning and I step outside. I look at my computer and I get real high. And i scream from the top of my lungs. Holy shit 345 notifications!
Might be part of the 'reader's economics' since most peeps are busy around this time but still want to get into the pony magic, a short good quality story in times of exams or essay harrangings will look tasty while a giant masterpiece is intimidating. readers may just swing around once the time is more freed up. i must confess that i haven't read 'Of insults' yet since i got three exams in a few days... but plan to read it once i gots the time! I just hope 'Steam Gears' gets the attention it deserves. Till after exam week!
