My Movie Night Pt 1. · 5:55am Jul 24th, 2013
I went to the movies today. Finally.
See, about a week ago, I was given a gift card from a friend to Fandango.com. At their insistence, I was told to see one, just for the hell of it. Problem was, I didn;t have a car, or a bike or any money for bus fare. And no way am I walking well over 20 miles to a theater.
BUT! Finally, I was able to get enough cobbled together to get to one. Question was... Which movie do I see?
As it happened, this particular theater had IMAX in it. And, by extension, IMAX 3D. And what was playing in IMAX 3D?
You guessed it: Pacific Rim.
If you have not yet seen this movie, I strongly suggest you do so and do so in IMAX 3D. Not that Real3D crap, that's low quality comared to IMAX.
But, if you DO go to see it, DO NOT expect much in terms of a plot. Because really, there isn't much of one. But, set that aside, and it becomes a real enjoyable ride with giant robots and monsters from another dimension.
I'm not much for explaining things -a bit of a failing of mine- so I'll do this on a rank scale from 1 to 10. One being shit, 10 being excellent.
Plot
I give this a 6 out of 10.
The overall story is something you'd see in a Japanese manga and the twist that's in it you could detect from a mile off. Not only that, the backstory for the characters themselves are fairly standard fair, and again, you'd see it a standard manga. I don't think I quite understood why the used a Japanese word for the monster and a German word for the robots, but it actually works ok and you don't really question it at all. Also, in the parts where they speak in Japanese, they probably could have done without and left it in english and nothing would have changed.
Cast
This gets a 8 out of 10.
The casting they did for this was pretty damn good, I thought. The characters they chose for the individual rolls were almost spot on. The acting however, left a bit to be desired. The person they chose for playing Stacker Pentecost, he seemed a bit... Wooden and displayed enough emotion to be replaced by, say a door. I understand he's supposed to be emotionless, but geez, you CAN show that better than that. Same goes for Moko Mori. Yes, she the traumatized female of the show, but, they just don't do enough with that, nor do they actually go into much detail about it. With Raleigh Becket, you get a first hand look at why he's the way he is. And that, in my eyes, works.
Also. Ron Pearlman. He stole the show and I LOVE his last line. It makes the whole movie. Stay for the credits. Trust me.
Action
This... This gets a 9 out of 10.
The action was damn good. You could see the effort put into it all and you could almost feel the hits happening. Not much else to say about that.
Special Effects
This also gets a 9 out of 10.
Like I said before. Go see it in IMAX 3D. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT. This is a movie you HAVE to see in 3d simply for the experience. It makes the action sequences much better. Truly. That being said, they could have done more to utilize that aspect of it, but O can understand that it might look awkward in 2d. Also the fact that in IMAX it looks super sharp helps.
Overall
8 out of 10.
Like I said. This is a movie you go into expecting action rather than plot. Will it be memorable? Probably not. Is it worth it? Yes, if only for a quick little escape from the world of today.
I strongly recommend you see it.
Welp. That's all I got today. I still have a bit of money left on the gift card... So, tune in tomorrow when I go off to see White House Down.
That's all for now! See ya!

Yessssssssss, people love Pacific Rim and that makes me happy!
Hmm, if it lacks in plot, they could always take a look at the R34 stuff this fandom has. There is a lot of plot there, if you know what I mean.

Pfffffft. True enough.

Yes, that was almost exactly my reaction to it. I'm not really a fan of 3D movies, but this one did benefit from it. I found the plot to be servicable and the acting to be uneven, but whenever robots were fighting monsters, I was happy as a clam, and that was often. I actually like the kinda simple, by-the-book plot in this because they didn't leave a bunch of plot hole openings. The less complex the plot, the easier it is to make it make sense. Well, in a manga sort of way.

That's why manga stories sometimes work so well.
Simplicity that you can take the time to expand on.

I think the video game for this movie was out before it was. I played it, I'm pro with one character, frickin suck the butt with all the others. Lawl.
