    Rant

I'm sure a great many of you are purveyors of the fine arts. Writing, drawing, painting, singing, making music, whatever your flavour, I want to talk to you. People are going to tell you to study things that will get you a decent job, even if those things aren't in the direction you want to go. People will tell you that having dreams is nice and all, but you need to take the path of least

    Good lord!

    That's a lot of followers!

In celebration of this crazy occasion, I'd like to ask for your opinions on something. A lot of people come to me for writing advice, and while I don't claim to be the most skilful writer, I do know some useful bits of general knowledge. Would anyone be interested in occasional blog posts where I address the most common problems budding writers encounter?

    Where is the next chapter?

I'm not dead, nor have I been incapacitated. Every time I set a schedule, life makes it abundantly clear that it disapproves.
My apologies for the lack of updates. I've been so frustrated with having no time or energy to write that I cut myself off from a few things, this site being one of them.

    University Days next chapter RESULTS

The poll results are in and out of the 2,000+ readers, almost 300 voted. It's cool, I ignore blog posts too.

Anyway, the decision has been made and the next chapter will cover the day before Octavia's birthday (AKA awkward snowy cuteness).

Ask me anything! · 12:35pm Mar 29th, 2012

I'll answer anything truthfully.

Obviously, I'm not going to give away my real name/passwords/address/card number etc. but I will endeavour to answer everything else!

Why am I doing this? Because I'm bored, of course!

EDIT: This can go on for weeks. Ask a question, no matter when, and I'll answer it.

anything? (i know lame joke, but it had to be made sooner or later)

Now seriosly. How and Why did you start writing Fan-fics?

Did you copy this from me?

Secondly, how does it feel to be so awesome?

-Midnight

Who is your favorite pony and why? :pinkiehappy:

Hmm... as a new writer, may I ask:
1. Where do you get your ideas from (Or what inspired your stories)
2. Was getting to EQD a difficult process?
3. And do you have any tips for new writers like me? Other than just reading more books?
4.Whether did you write other forms of stories before writing for FF.net
5. Any favorite fic author here or (real world book) ?

It was a dark and stormy night, and I had just finished reading my three hundredth AppleDash fic. I thought to myself, why don't I give that a shot? Can't be too hard, right?
And bam! The Colours of the Rainbow chapter 1 was born! No plan, no goal, just writing. And it was so fun! I loved coming home from school (I was still at highschool when I started) every day and diving back into the pony stories, both the one I was writing and the ones I was reading. And then I just kept going, and now look at me. Completely obsessed. :D

48631
Hahaha! Yes, I did!
Through a weird course of events, I saw you were in Aussie Bronies so I checked out your profile again. I saw you had 70+ comments and I was like damn that's a lot of questions. I was quite bored, and it looked like fun, so I gave it a shot!
I'm awesome? I guess that feels... awesome!

And.. do you think that creativity can be taught, or is it a natural thing within people?

48636

Well heck, that's just answered my second question.
Aussie, huh?

The awesome has been doubled :D

48633
Oh that's a tough one...
At the moment I would have to say Rarity. She manages to pull off looks, charm, and being a badass while still behaving with grace and eloquence.

48635
1. Where do you get your ideas from (Or what inspired your stories)
It varies wildly. Sometimes it is other fics that I read and want to emulate, sometimes its just a fantasy scenario that's been marinating in the back of my mind for a few weeks that finally takes shape. Movies, music, television shows, just media in general is constantly bombarding me with contrasting ideas and sometimes a couple of them stick together and form inspiration.
2. Was getting to EQD a difficult process?
Surprisingly, no. The first story I submitted there was Pirates For A Day, and it went straight from Seth to the prereaders to the queue without any comments or rejections. Naturally, I was a bit confused. When the same thing happened to Eternity, I wondered if they were even reading the stories I sent in. Finally, when Harrowed Crown got rejected I had the ego slapped out of me... until it got in a few days ago. I really don't know what to say about it, I guess I was really lucky.
3. And do you have any tips for new writers like me? Other than just reading more books?
Write more books! :D
Seriously, writing and getting feedback and constructive criticism is soooo valuable. Looking at how other people structure their sentences and what words they use can help you form your own style. Every writer is a collection of knowledge taught by a thousand other writers.
4.Whether did you write other forms of stories before writing for FF.net
I wrote short stories all the time, ever since I could. I've posted a couple on my DA, too. But I'm still too young to be taken seriously as an author, so I continue to hone my style by writing about what I love: PONIEEEES!
5. Any favorite fic author here or (real world book) ?
Favourite fic author... hmmm... It's a choice between the author of MLD, and the author of Allegrezza. As for real world favourite book, the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan is fantastic, as is the Harry Potter series.

48639
Creativity can be taught, in a sense. The most inspired and imaginative people are those who have a lot to draw from. So if you read and learn about a wide range of things, you'll come up with better and better ideas.
There do seem to be people who are just naturally inclined towards creative activities, but that's just a result of their life experience. Anyone can be creative, given enough time and knowledge.
48640
I was also pretty excited when I saw you were Australian too :D It's always nice finding others on here.

48641

Bahaha I knew it was a tough one that's why I asked :pinkiecrazy:

How long does writing a single chapter take you? Ah writing. Something that I hardly did for ages. Last time when I tried writing a long time ago, lots of people told me it was crap. Now, I'm not too sure if I have any hope haha.

As for feed back... the most worrisome thing is not getting any.

48642
It appears you're pretty young, too; it always amazes me to see the competition out there from people around my own age :rainbowkiss:

Yeah, that's why I made the group. "Surely," I thought, "I can not be the only Aussie around here."

Honestly I was surprised to see you and determamfidd in the group; you two are like... my top 2 fave authors, and you're Aussie too? It's golden, to be sure.

- Midnight

48644
Depends on the story.
For a story like Fetlock Holmes, which requires a lot of attention to detail (hurr hurr), it can take me up to a week of nervously typing and retyping each sentence.
For a story like Vinyl and Octavia: University Days, it can be as little as two days because it's a surface-level story.
Harrowed Crown was easy to write because the format was simple and very conducive to spending a couple of minutes a day on it.

48645
How old are you? Ahem, without being creepy.

48649

Turning 18 later this year.

You? Without being creepy.

Does that mean you don't do drafts, but instead just 'go with the motion' while writing stuff?

Oh, hehe, I am a devil.

Have you ever read my stories, and if so, do you like them?

- Midnight

48650
Wait, really? So am I :O

48652
The first chapter/part of a story is almost invariably without a plan. I get an idea and I'm so inspired that I can blast out a couple of thousand words before I run out of steam and realise I need a plan. I've always hated drafts, preferring instead to tweak the story as you write, never completely rewriting anything.
However, plans can also be inspiration-fueled. I have a 6 chapter GildaDash story completely planned out that I just need to write. Often, a story will either be easy to plan or easy to write, never both.
Uh, I think I went off on a little tangent there. Sorry.

48656
I can't say I have read any of your stories, however with this new perspective of you I think I will. Do you have any particular favourite of yours?

48659

Uh... Well, not really. You can if you'd like. They're nothing special.
Uh... Hearts Aflutter is the only one that gets even vaguely better in writing quality... uh...
Now I'm nervous. :rainbowderp:

- Midnight

Well, here is a tough one:
Which story of you'rs is you're favorite?

48661
Aha! Not as tough as you think!
Eternity- no, wait, maybe Pirates For A Day, it really got me started with... hmm... I really enjoyed writing Unrequited Lust... but Fetlock challenges my brain...
AARRRGHH

your humble prereader here! Have you begun to get annoyed with my lack.of laptop yet? I can.try to prereqd on my phone.if.so, but it would take me a while lol

48669
Haha, yeah it would be difficult on your phone. No, I'm not annoyed, but I do hope you find your laptop soon.

1: What is your order of preference for the Mane 6 + Princesses + CMC?

2: What is your favorite Episode.

3: What is your favorite fanon version of a character (Jappleack, Molestia, Stalkerloo, etc)?

4: What is your favorite ponyfic not written by you?

5: What is a story concept you do not want to write yourself but would like to see written?

6: What is the best thing the fandom has done with FiM?

7: What is the worst thing?

8: If you could go to Equestria would you want to go as a human, pony, or another species (specify)?

9: What is your primary motivation for writing fanfiction (implementing concepts, practicing writing, renown, etc)?

10: OTP?

48819
1: What is your order of preference for the Mane 6 + Princesses + CMC?
Favourites out of each group: Rarity, Luna, Sweetie Belle.
Favourites altogether: Rarity, Twilight, Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Fluttershy, Luna, Sweetie Belle, Applebloom, Scootaloo, Pinkie Pie, Celestia.
2: What is your favorite Episode.
Sweet and Elite
3: What is your favorite fanon version of a character (Jappleack, Molestia, Stalkerloo, etc)?
Hmm, I don't know many, but I would probably go with Molestia.
4: What is your favorite ponyfic not written by you?
Either My Little Dashie, for the pure emotion it brought me, or Allegrezza, for introducing me to Vinyl and Octavia shipping.
5: What is a story concept you do not want to write yourself but would like to see written?
Perhaps a Roseluck story where she is given a complete characterisation. I love her, but I wouldn't know where to start.
6: What is the best thing the fandom has done with FiM?
Made it more than a show. The actual episodes are just a small part of the experience now. Fics, art, music, animations, all of these things serve to keep our interest and insure that we'll last for the long haul.
7: What is the worst thing?
I guess the worst thing we've done is... you know, I can't think of anything.
8: If you could go to Equestria would you want to go as a human, pony, or another species (specify)?
As a pony, definitely. Preferably a unicorn so I could float stuff. That would be cool.
9: What is your primary motivation for writing fanfiction (implementing concepts, practicing writing, renown, etc)?
A combination of those. I might want to write a story in a certain way, and if I make it a pony story then I have guaranteed feedback. I also need to keep practicing if I ever want to be an actual author, and this is a great way to do it. And yes, I hunger for attention like a vulture. I can't help it, praise feels good.
10: OTP?
Vinyl and Octavia, though I am partial to AppleDash or RarityJack.

48832
That made me laugh out loud :D

48833

Cool.

Oh, sorry, 1 more: What is your favorite piece of SFW FiM art?

48833
#7: Rule 34 :pinkiecrazy:
I can't ask this without seeming creepy, but do you.. enjoy MLP Rule 34 drawings? :scootangel:

49239
Heh, well from the state of my DA favourites gallery, it would seem so.

Do you do proof reading for other people?

49583
Yes, I most certainly do.
I'll often also pick a story from the new stories bar and review it extensively just for fun.

49607
I'm glad you do, cuz everyone deserves feedback, no matter how brilliant the story is. If I finish my fic, may I request you to help me pre-read it? If you like it, probably lots of people might. I may be a lousy pony feathers of an writer, but if no one gives constructive feedback and say negative shit about the story, how can I write better?

If you are not busy with stuff, could you er.. share with me a few tips on writing dialogue better? I always have trouble with that.

49626
Absolutely, I'd be happy to preread it for you.
As for dialogue, I'm not sure what tips I can give off the top of my head, but here goes:
-Say the conversation out loud and see if it flows well
-Don't try too hard to use words other than 'said', and in reverse don't just use 'said'
-If it's an established character speaking, try imagining them saying it in their voice
-Start a new line when other characters start speaking
-Action and dialogue should go on the same line if it's by the same character (Pinkie hopped up and down excitedly. "I can't wait for the party!")
That's all I can really think of for now.

Where do you live in Australia? I live in Brisbane:pinkiehappy:.

49647
49650

Melbourne!
...Yeah, I'm not proud. :trixieshiftleft:

- Midnight

54713
I've been to Melbourne!
It was... nice.
We did such things as:
- Go to restaurants!
- Stand in the rain!
- Watch T.V!

I'm kidding, it was a pretty cool city.

54716

It's alright, I guess. I prefer a country town feel, myself.
Not that I live in one. :trixieshiftleft:

The thing is, that's practically all there is to do here; even when you are 18 and allowed to drink and stuff. Maybe add "Go Clubbing" to the list.

Meh.

Best thing in Victoria is not the city on Port Philip Bay, I can tell you that.

- Midnight

Are you still answering questions here?

96310 Oh! cool, okay then, how long/often are you on the internet on a regular daily basis?

96334
From the moment I wake up to the moment I go to bed, if I can.
Obviously that pesky 'life' gets in the way every now and then, but I try. :D

96435 Happens to us all. Ever sit there with nothing to do for a long period of time?

96441
Yes, fairly often. If I'm not in the mood to write and don't have anything to do, I tend to daydream for ages.

96451 Then.... do you mind talking to a nobody like me through email?

96610
Sure, though I also have Skype if that's easier. I don't do voice or video chats due to hardware constraints though, only text.
Either way, dawnfade@gmail.com

96618 Thank you very much! I also can't do voice/video chat do to hardware problems. hawkfur34@yahoo.com
