Friendship is Card Games: Kenbucky Roller Derby #2 & #3

We return to the cutthroat world of G5 roller derby, where Sunny’s trying her darndest to prove she’s more than just a casual skater… and has assembled one of the most ragtag teams of misfits this side of the Mighty Ducks in the process. Let’s see how the story’s developed from there.

    Swan Song

No, not mine. The Barcast's. The last call is currently under way, and if you want to hear my part in the grand interview lightning round, you can tune in at 4:20 Eastern/1:20 Pacific (about an hour from this posting.)

Yes, 4:20 on 4/20. No, I do not partake. Sorry to disappoint. :derpytongue2:

    Pest List

Just something I whipped together for fun one day, set to a possibly recognizable tune, all intended in good fun. And hey, given that I derived my Fimfic handle from a misremembered detail of the Mikado, it's only appropriate. :derpytongue2:

Friendship is Card Games: d20 Pony, Ch. 9, Pt. 1

Goodness, it’s been almost two years since I last checked in on Trailblazer’s adventures. IDW putting out comics almost as quickly as I could review them will do that, especially given all of the G5 video media coming out concurrently.

Friendship is Card Games: Tell Your Tale, Season 2, Part 2 · 12:31pm March 10th

Looks like that Leap Day hypothesis carried some weight. The long-form episodes should be interesting in their own right, but we’re not looking at one this week. Let’s see what there is to see.

Misty-rious New Room

And we begin with that classic tale of the modern Pronkmetheus, Flankenstein… and a continuity issue. Remember how Pipp struggled to get the slightest squeak of fear out of Misty? I suppose the prospect of an angry flesh golem is a bit more terrifying than what Nightmare Night at the Brighthouse can offer.

One of the nice things about G5 is that a unicorn remembering she has a flashlight attached to her head is more amusing than anything else. They’re still internalizing that kind of thing, Misty especially.
… Now the animated book, that’s a bit more unusual. Though with ever more magic pouring into the world, I imagine this sort of thing will happen with ever-greater frequency.

Hmm. Is this meant to be a copy of the friendship journal? Different cover design, but that’s hardly an impediment.
And the Brighthouse is developing rooms that weren’t there the day before. Truly a worthy heir to Namepending Castle.

Hmm. Now we’re getting some interesting insights into the details of the IP kerfuffle that’s put G5 at such odds with its own odds. Unless Hasbro paid through the nose for these windows (paintings? bas-reliefs?) they can use the likenesses of G4 characters just fine. It’s the names that may be the problem, which would also explain why this generation doesn’t have an Applejack.

Ah. The callbacks aren’t limited to G4. That’s definitely the original Smooze, and possibly Tirac rather than Tirek.
Huh. And a picture of the G5 cast, though notably lacking Misty. And with more crystal pillars than I expected.

A banner of Celestia and Luna sealing Discord, and of the Elements of Harmony. Very interesting stuff, and that’s putting aside the bookshelf and alchemy supplies flanking it… and the butterfly patterns on the arches. Between those and the living specimens fluttering through the hall, Misty almost certainly has some deeper connection to this place. The question is whether we’ll ever see it again after this short.

I don’t know why the lotus pattern makes Zipp float, nor does anypony involved.

The sandwich was salvagable until Zipp slammed it on the floor peanut butter side-down… though I suppose some of her coat was already on this slice.

I get the feeling this is not the first time Izzy’s warddrobe has belched.

Ah, messing with the lighting on the banner makes the top of the Brighthouse turn. I’m beginning to suspect there are further hidden rooms, possibly leading to a book that takes you to another universe if you touch the picture on the last page.

I’m noticing a theme of Misty forgetting she has a horn. And again, for most of her life, it’s just been a reminder of the power she didn’t have, so that’s fair.

Well, I was half-right about the book. Though a living spellbook is certainly interesting. Familiar, but interesting.

Hmm. The last time a unicorn floated in the air while surrounded by motes of magic after interacting with a mysterious spellbook, she ended up with wings. Still, I’m going to guess that won’t be the case here.

What we do get are diagrams of the room where Misty has found herself and the Brighthouse as a whole… which raises the question of who actually built the place. Presumably with the rise in magic, it’s begun rebuilding itself, and The Art of Spelling can maintain a real-time blueprint of the place.
Or it’s just a strategy guide for this Myst game. :raritywink:

“Swirl… Star…”
Ah. Misty has technically been banished. Of course he’s involved.

Man, Zecora got a raw deal having her soul forced into architecture.
What? :derpytongue2: The room rhymes and acts as a teacher for a young unicorn learning to come out of her shell. All we need is for it to start teaching Seashell how to make potions and the comparison makes itself.

I’m not entirely sure what the enchanted origami infusing itself into Misty’s cutie mark did, and I’m almost afraid to ask.

“D-did you just fall out of a magical door in the ceiling?”
That is the sound of a mare realizing she is no longer the protagonist of the series long after the fact.

“I’ve lived here my whole life.”
That continuity flub feels all the more egregious when we saw Sunny looking at the picture frame that broken when the old lighthouse was demolished. Presumably Sunny means this location rather than this building, but it’s still frustrating. To say nothing of a moral of “This is where you belong” long after Misty moved in. There are some truly fascinating bits to this one, but overall it feels like they were just throwing ideas at the wall and hoping some will stick.

Swirlpool Starlight

Well, so much for that drink. Also, if you pause, you can see that the only bothered to make three breezie models for the swarm.

And Violette Rainbow completes her canon immigration with a speaking role. Never thought I’d see the day. I do have to pity those who aren’t following the comic and the “Literally who?” moment this made for them.

I admit, my first thought as the breezies circled that pond was “Oh no, they’re laying eggs.”

Two questions:
1. Why does the literal child know about this decennial event while Izzy, her crafting teacher, apparently doesn’t?
2. Why is any event associated with the recently returned breezies described as happening “every ten years”?

At this point, I’m beginning to think we’ve jumped timelines to a Equestria where magic never left. (Which is a Watsonian way of saying that the writers have completely lost track of where they started.)

Fae magic that forever changes the witness isn’t generally a good thing…

Mysterious voices from nowhere seem to be a theme with this batch. Also, what happens when there are no non-breezie witnesses to this grand confluence? This whole arrangement smacks of a special event made specifically for the PCs.
Also, fae magic that already knows your name very often isn’t a good thing.

Izzy, it explicitly said it was showing Violette her future… unless only Violette could hear the voice, which is a distinct possibility. As is eating her brains; laying eggs is still on the table.

Given the fabled healing powers of painted ponies, one acting as the cultivator of the Bridlewood does make some sense. It’s a stretch for Izzy’s student, but that just means she can apply aesthetic creativity to the growth of the forest. (It may help to get some earth ponies on board for that, though.)

Yeah, Misty being concerned by a look into her heart is more than understandable.

The Elemental Plane of Flashbacks? Wasn’t expecting to see this place again. Though, once more, I doubt this will end in additional alicorns.

“Your most magical creations are still ahead of you.”
Well, that’s intriguingly vague.

Yeah, not the best presentation method, though there is the question of how much of this is another consciousness and how much is the viewer’s own mind and heart. Especially given that ominous red-eyed Misty.

“Misty, you’re the goodest pony I know. The universe will see that. Or else.
I love the idea of Izzy deciding to fight God if the will of the cosmos doesn’t agree with her on Misty’s moral character. She’d make one heck of an SMT protagonist. I choose to disregard the “Kidding” at the end of that.

The cutie mark mantras have never felt quite as superfluous as in this episode. The timing is especially bad. All Misty had to do was listen, or recite her rhyme beforehand to psych herself up. As is, it seems like she was too busy reassuring herself to actually hear her personal prophecy. And it’s not really clear what her magic did. Did she just close those flashback windows, or did she expunge her time with Opaline from her own memory?

Snrk. I’m sorry, I cannot take the breezie chorus seriously.

There’s a good idea here, but it stumbles in the execution. Also, it’s a shame there wasn’t time to provide context for Violette for those unfamiliar with the comics. Almost like that should have been a short before this one as opposed to, say, “Sparky creates a kaiju.”
Also, if I had a nickel for every G5 mention of starlight that made Ms. Glimmer's absence more notable, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it makes me worried there will be more of it. At least it wasn't the Swirlpool Shimmer.

The Lone Alicorn

… Well. I guess those comments about alicornication conditions came due. Heck of a thing to open on without any explanation. Also, weird that Pipp’s wings and Misty’s horn have the glow to them as the parts they don’t already have.

“We’re all alicorns now!”
Yes, and I’m increasingly convinced this is a dream.

Yup, definitely a dream. Especially given the pegasi plummeting to their doom.

“But then everypony fell out of the sky and I ended up… alone.”
Aside from Sunny’s well established reasons to fear being alone, both personal and those stemming from being a member of a herd species, this could be indicative of concerns that she’s deliberately not thought about: Between Opaline and her own research, she knows that alicorns are immortal, or at least unaging. Sunny doesn’t just fear losing her friends. She may fear outliving them. And the worst part is that her unusual nature means that she doesn’t even know if she should worry about that or the inevitability of her own death.

Of course, the show can’t come out and say that, so it’ll present it as worry over being the last alicorn, but the euphemism is clear. (Zipp, naturally, completely glosses over it because there’s a potential mystery ahoof.)

And we’ve just completely broken from Make Your Mark canon in that Opaline’s castle wasn’t completely consumed by her Together Tree. Yes, the two series have had irreconcilable disagreements, but never on something this major. Also, the place doesn’t really look like itself.

A thumping bass beat isn’t exactly the most intimidating of noises to hear from abandoned ruins.
Also, either of you want to bring Misty in on this? You know, the mare who actually lived here most of her life? No? Well, I suppose she did get the spotlight for the last two shorts. Still seems like something where she should be consulted, much less check to see if Opaline told her about any other alicorns. Which, you know, she did, if obliquely

So just announcing their virtues is a thing now? Thanks, I hate it. We’re another step closer to summoning Captain Planet, especially with Misty as Heart.

I will say that I do prefer the castle still standing that its secrets might be plundered. I just wish the source material could agree on whether or not that’s the case.

Ah. Opaline’s raccoonicorn assistant brought in buddies to celebrate the boss’s downfall. And going by the teal flames on the speakers, they’re using her DJ setup. Which raises questions of its own, but I can certainly accept it more than audio equipment ex nihilo.
The fact that they’re partying to a “My Bananas” remix is just insult to injury for Sunny, and I honestly love that.

Always awkward to find effigies of yourself. I’m honestly kind of surprised that Opaline never burned those to cinders.

Yeah, understandable that Sunny has some traumatic memories associated with the throne room. Aside from fighting for her life, she was also fighting a corruption of everything she ever admired and held dear.
Zipp, meanwhile, does the “evil queen” schtick a little too well. And she couldn’t read the room if the subtext were in ten-foot-tall flaming letters.

“Everything important must have been destroyed when we defeated Opaline!”
Never mind that, by all indications, they have not looked at a single one of the surviving books. It’s implied by the timeskip, yes, but I’d still like to have seen even a glance.

“Even if there are other alicorns, how are we ever going to find them?”
The Bearer of Hope, everyone. :ajbemused:

Huh. Apparently Sunny dreamt of Skyros. Intriguing.

“The Starscout crest!”
What, they couldn’t afford one more mention of Twilight’s name? Though Sunny being a descendant of Flurry Heart (or possibly even Twilight herself) would be interesting, and would explain why Argyle was so devoted to the history everypony else so readily dismissed. Still, this retcon leaves an especially foul taste in my mouth.

“Time to fly, Sunny!”
Sunny proceeds to not deploy her wings. Not until dramatically appropriate, anyway.

Ah. The bridge was there; the castle was just at an unusual camera angle. Fair enough.

“There’s got to be more alicorns out there.”
I feel like Sunny’s taking an extreme logical leap here. The tapestry is proof that there were other alicorns once, but whether they’re still out there is indeterminate for now. Of course, emotionally, she needs this to be true, so I don’t begrudge her the assumption.

My word, this one actually had something resembling a larger plot, and not just vague intimations of things to come. The continuity confusion was frustrating, but this is definitely laying the groundwork for something bigger. Now it’s a matter of seeing if they ever follow through on that promise.

Also, nopony ever recited a mantra this episode. They don’t have to do it once per episode, which makes the gratuitous examples all the more frustrating.

Bunnisi Beauties

It’s kind of funny how the song previously used as an example of the local equivalent of a TikTok trend is being recycled for ongoing hijinks. And unlike other recycled G5 sngs, this one still works perfectly in its new context.
Also, right, “bunnisi” as in the plural of “bunnisus.” For some reason I can never process that word. Not least because if it’s modifying “beauties,” it should be the singular. As the tips on my user page note, “traditional pegasi armor" is as wrong as "traditional unicorns regalia" or "traditional earth ponies recipe.” Note the lack of apostrophes.

Should we be concerned about the bunnisi escaping captivity? I feel like that will be a problem down the line.

So they’re just calling it “Easter.” Not even bothering for a horse pun with that one. So the question becomes whether reverence of the goddess Eostre existed in this world, and moreover whether horse-Christianity adopted several of her rites and symbols into its own spring festival. (To say nothing of the can of worms horse-Christianity itself represents. Or possibly rabbit-Christianity. This is why you don’t use real world holidays in fantasy settings.)

That aside, I do appreciate Hitch indulging in terrible dad jokes.

I do have to wonder if Hitch has two pairs of sunglasses on his person at all times for this specific occasion.

I would very much like an explanation for what appears to be a mirror portal after the scene change. Also, who or what is levitating all of the floating items when there are two earth ponies and two pegasi accounted for?

Going by Rocky and Jazz’s cooing over Hitch getting mobbed by bunnisi, I have to wonder about Mane Melody’s maternity leave policy.

I am once more raising the levitation question on those charms.

I see Allura has about as much tactical acumen as Opaline. Anything that even remotely resembles the Nova Charm, anything even called a charm, must be a portal key. That or she’s clutching at straws just to make herself feel like she’s making progress in her ambiguous mission. (Of course, she could always just, you know, allure these isolated creatures to give her the charms, especially with no convenient healing snow in the area, but that would require her to think. G5 characters are limited to one firing of the synapses per fiscal year, and that’s across the entire cast. :derpytongue2:)

Yes, the deep purple arctic hare will easily blend in with the pastel winged rabbits. No one will suspect a thing. (Of course, no one will suspect a thing, but they should.)

“Without [the Nova Charm], we’ll be stuck in Maretime Bay forever!
And whose fault is that? You’re the one who jumped through a decaying portal with no further plan, Allura. Really, that’s the big question about her: Where does she want to go?

Ah. Obedience pollen. That’s not at all concerning. Though it does fit Hitch’s talent better than a flower that transmutes food waste into stuffed animals.

Hmm. Yelling at someone who isn’t paying attention to you and has lost focus on their intended objective. Congratulations, Allura. You’ve become…
:coolphoto:
Twitch chat.

That said, it does seem that the Nova Charm may be in mixed in with the other accessories, which is one of the most inexplicable and irresponsible things I’ve seen in G5. Maybe, just maybe, you should keep a better eye the thing the villain you know is here wants to steal from you. (Or it’s just a lookalike that Pipp made based on the original, which would be vastly more reasonable.)

I do wonder if this will have long-term consequences for Twitch and Allura. Probably not, but it’s still worth wondering. Unfortunately, after the implication-dense earlier shorts, this feels like an especially empty note to end on. Pipp really does seem to be the harbinger of sound and fury signifying little.
(Also, how does Eggmund Bunny factor into this celebration, if at all?)

The more I see of this season, the more convinced I am that this isn’t the future of the Twilit Era. This is the future of Pony Life. What we’re seeing as magic grows is a return to the chaos of happier times, pinker seas, and looser continuity (though Pony Life may actually have Tell Your Tale beat there.)

Now, let’s see just what I can make of this latest visit to Discord’s shelves:

Looks like that Leap Day hypothesis carried some weight.

I mean… probably not? I still think it's most likely they just took a week off to counteract the fact of only having 48 episodes this year, and we'll see this once a quarter leading up to each 22-min special.

I thought "Misty-rious New Room" was intriguing for being an actual plot setup that, with MYM not renewed, was able to go full throttle on committing to itself and being something that will come back. And Misty training in magic is something, especially for a gen where, Deus Ex Friendship moments excepted, it's all being very basic spells. That said, the fluffy nothingburger tone and execution of these shorts, and especially the "throwing ideas at the wall" mentality, makes it all feel as weightless as this webseries invariably is.

I do have to pity those who aren’t following the comic and the “Literally who?” moment this made for them.

Eh, her integration is only marginally less contextualised then some of TYT's actual original character (and those in MYM too that are just dropped in, like the Pippsqueaks). Viewers are probably used to it! :twilightsheepish:

And we’ve just completely broken from Make Your Mark canon in that Opaline’s castle wasn’t completely consumed by her Together Tree. Yes, the two series have had irreconcilable disagreements, but never on something this major. Also, the place doesn’t really look like itself.

Not untrue, but given how the different animation style less the castle here be so vast as opposed to the hideously set-bound cramped soundstage(s) we got in MYM, I'm not too bothered.

So just announcing their virtues is a thing now? Thanks, I hate it. We’re another step closer to summoning Captain Planet, especially with Misty as Heart.

Making it all the more ironic the next short doesn't have any virtue announcing! I'm not foolish enough to hope that's more than a one-off aberration.

I would very much like an explanation for what appears to be a mirror portal after the scene change. Also, who or what is levitating all of the floating items when there are two earth ponies and two pegasi accounted for?

Someone on the animation team has evidently gone off the deep end. Don't blame them.

And on "Bunnisi Beauties" (what an awful title to try and say out loud), even if it passes by much quicker then when MYM does the same and gets a few jokes out of it, there's no joy to be had in resurrecting the Opaline/Misty thing of sending a minion to infiltrate, the heroes being dense and never knowing what's up, and the mission failing miserably due to plot "hijinks". It almost feels like they had a quota for Allura reappearing every x shorts up to her (presumed) starring role in a 22-min special, so the kids won't forget about her. This hodgepodge of that and more bunny hijinks that barely ties in to Easter speaks to them snoring through the writing process.

Yes, the two series have had irreconcilable disagreements

Each series has had irreconcilable disagreements with itself, even back in G4.

I just wish the source material could agree on whether or not that’s the case.

The source material can't seem to agree with itself on anything, even taking each individual medium in a vacuum. The deadlines were too strict for them to check.

Now, let’s see just what I can make of this latest visit to Discord’s shelves:

Stupid Complicated Game Alert: Shamanic Vestige is not optional. If both abilities have legal targets, you have to pick one. If one of them doesn't, I think you can pick that one to fake it?

And Violette Rainbow completes her canon immigration with a speaking role. Never thought I’d see the day. I do have to pity those who aren’t following the comic and the “Literally who?” moment this made for them.

I thank you for your pity.

Agreed that it would have been funnier (and arguably more in character) if Izzy hadn't twice indicated that she was only kidding when she threatened to have a word with the universe if it mistreated one of her friends. Commit to the joke, writers!

Sunny calling herself the last alicorn pretty strongly implies that Opaline is officially dead. Or at least that all of the characters think she's truly dead.

The continuity confusion was frustrating, but this is definitely laying the groundwork for something bigger. Now it’s a matter of seeing if they ever follow through on that promise.

They're definitely laying a lot of groundwork -- the previous short very deliberately showed two vague outlines of things that Izzy will build later in the series. So yeah, it's going to be very disappointing if the series fails to follow through on all of this blatant hinting.

Going by Rocky and Jazz’s cooing over Hitch getting mobbed by bunnisi, I have to wonder about Mane Melody’s maternity leave policy.

Pipp will expect the foal to be educated in the art of glamour and ready to begin assisting within six months.

The more I see of this season, the more convinced I am that this isn’t the future of the Twilit Era. This is the future of Pony Life.

At first I recoiled, but then I realized that my main problem with Pony Life was that it tried to cash in on already-established characters without hewing to the characterizations and limitations that made said characters so well-liked in the first place. Given that G5 has yet to settle on consistent personalities for most of the main cast, maybe that isn't so bad. It isn't good, but at least it isn't bad.

There are definitely interesting things in these shorts, and I'm delighted by every bit of wild magic that shows up. Unfortunately my gut tells me these were the short versions of what were supposed to be full episodes of MYM that we will never see, and that little or nothing will come of them :applejackunsure: So my appreciation is tinged with sadness, and I guess that's just how it's going to be until and unless G5 gets renewed with more seasons. But given that all of media seems to be heavily cutting just about everything right now, I find it hard to be hopeful.

"G5 characters are limited to one firing of the synapses per fiscal year..."

When the cast has less brain power than the (very young) target audience, one has to assume that the G5 world is somewhere inside the idiot ball.

"...this isn’t the future of the Twilit Era. This is the future of Pony Life."
