State of the Scribe: April 2024

You know what they say about the best laid plans? I'll be real brief with this update, for reasons that will be self-evident.

State of the Scribe: February 2024

Another month, albeit the shortest of the year. I still haven't had a chance to get into the process side of my writing and write that detailed plan for the year, been too busy writing a novel. Guess that's a good problem to have.

State of the Scribe: January 2024

This is exactly the 71st month I've posted a patreon calendar. Almost but not quite six years of writing fanfic, sharing all these ideas with you that would otherwise stay trapped in my head. I couldn't begin this post, and the beginning of a new year without expressing my profound thanks to everyone who keeps supporting me. Your help, big or small, is the only reason I'm still able to write

New Story: The First Willowbrook Christmas!

Hey pones! A Merry Christmas to those who celebrate! Last year I wrote a short story for the holiday, but the editing pushed it back for a little while. For those who enjoyed Sisters of Willowbrook, I have a story for you to check out! The final chapter will get posted tomorrow:

New Story: Shattered Pentacle · 9:10pm Dec 16th, 2023

Read it here!

Lyra "Heartstrings" Harper has known all her life that something was missing. After a near-fatal encounter with a vampire left her traumatized, she's always kept her eyes alert for greater dangers, watching the shadowy alleys of Canterlot with suspicion for whatever awful things might be lurking there. The world is full of so many dark things, far mightier than any human being could ever be.

Something deep inside stirs in the darkness. Even after all she suffered, all the death she'd witness, Lyra will not accept this is the only way. There must be something more. At last she wakes from her nightmare, and her eyes open. Soon she discovers many of the people she knew, her high school friends and others, already knew about this deeper world. Now she's prepared to take her place in it, and embrace the magic she always had.

Assuming her monster-hunting girlfriend doesn't find out, and end her awakening before it can begin.

Hey pones, been a long time since I've had one of these blogs. But now I'm excited to share a story I've been working on--one of my "bucket list" projects for fanfiction. Those who know me will know I have a deep and abiding passion for tabletop games (I work in the industry professional now after all). I still run them in my discord server, and my IRL friend group. For the longest time, I've wanted to translate my absolute favorite game into the fiction setting. I've got some writing into the official board game adaptations of Vampire (there's no mage tabletop I know of since the collectable card game included some of them, RIP). This story was the result.

To create its setting, I more or less tried to imagine what many of the pony unicorns would look like as Mages, capturing their histories, personalities, and powers in a human world instead of a pony one.

I'd put this story up there with Spirits of Change or Frames of War in terms of my most passionate projects, where my desire to create simply must find some expression. Unlike Frames of War though, this one does not expect or require its readers to jump in with an intimate (or indeed, any) knowledge of the lore, setting, or rules of the game. That said, those who do have a WoD background can probably imagine the skills, spells, and dice rolls happening with each chapter, and anticipate what various in-universe terms mean.

A huge thanks to Bitera for giving me the chance to write it.

From the description itself, Vampire stands out as it's the old World Of Darkness while the others are from its successor: Chronicles Of Darkness.

The Chronicles version of Vampire is subtitled "the Requiem" for the curious.

Who did the artwork?

WoD with humanized ponies? I'll take it! :D

Mage The Ascension or Awakening? Either way this promises quite the level of shenanigans. Color me intrigued, I'm following this one.

Awakening. I never got into oWoD.

The artist was Zen. I credited them on the story page, but maybe I should've done it here too. X.x

Yeah I should probably make sure I use rules from Vampire the Requiem. Somehow I spaced on that subtitle.

Way to make someone feel old :rainbowwild:

For real though, neat! I'm following, will read soon.

I should clarify that I didn't think it was an error or that you should conform to either the oWoD or CoD, just that the one from oWoD stood out.
