This will be my last post before I make myself scarce until I watch Make Your Mark Chapter 6 tomorrow over Thanksgiving dinner.
I guess some fans will complain about anything.
First it was Opaline's 'blah blah dragonfire'. Then it was the fart jokes.
So I guess now that we're finally, at last getting a G4 character in the flesh, now some fans have to "fix" how he looks.
You know, because going from a flash-animated 2D cartoon to full 3D CGI has always been easy and flawless with nothing lost or gained in translation. Ever.
Spike looks fine. If you don't agree, then sit down and shut up, you whiny nitpicking nancies.
I'll sound a lot more thankful tomorrow, I swear.

Not to mention that, personally, he looked absolutely hideous in The Last Problem, and this is an overall massive improvement.
Another point to consider: Since Warner Discovery owns Season 5-9 of FiM, legally speaking, Buff Spike may not be canon to G5.
That also helps explain why G5 Twilight does not look like Celestia 2.0. I'm just stating a theory here.
I mean, his new design does look a lot better. Although it's interesting to see how dragons evolve in the MLP universe. Originally, he was bipedal, but now has a feral form. And I do agree with how his final design in G4 was really botched. Not sure what Hasbro was doing in the design department.

I cannot imagine G5 showrunners being forced to only use FiM 1-4 as canon.
That would fuck things up in all kinds of ways. That has to be only for streaming rights or something, because Netflix has only had 1-4 for years.
Hasbro cannot possibly be that stupid, to sell off more than half of their established lore.

Yeah, this trailer has made me want to make one more story in my Forgotten series, with probably the closest thing I could get to retconning (since Spike and Luna sacrificed themselves for the Crystal Heart ritual).
Just have to 1. Come up with an explanation for how he didn't die, and 2. Decide what branch to continue, the Sunset version, or Flurry version.

To be fair, the "Forgotten" series is AU anyway. Perhaps you could simply have the Spike shown there to be the same-named adult son or grandson of the G4 Spike. In the case of Flurry, it could be a case of checking up on her adoptive cousin (possibly her last living family).
And it also makes the "slightly divergent timeline" theory concerning G5 and G4 more plausible.
Or, if you do decide on the "explaining how Spike didn't die", perhaps Luna sacrificing herself along with Spike provided enough juice to, instead of killing Spike, sent him to a slightly divergent timeline in a slightly different adult body. But it would probably be simpler to just say the "Forgotten" version of "Isle of Scaly" Spike was simply G4 Spike's same named adult son or grandson.

No, I'm not doing that kind of cop-out. Spike is Spike.
To be faaiiiir I've dislike all the G5 models. Part of why I decided to not watch it, one of many reasons.
But hey if people like it, good for them. I came into the fandom in late 2011, people hated on G4 then too. So screw the haters, like what you like.
Now, having said that... What have they done to my beautiful boy?
I’d like to point out that this far from unique to MLP fans. Let’s go over to the less infamous but arguably slightly worse fandom that is Helluva Boss. You know, that show that puts a lot of work into its visuals and having unique character designs? Yeah, whenever a new character pops there are always people who say the designs are “ugly.” Bonus points if there’s some obvious symbolism in the designs and they don’t seem to grasp this.
Side note: isn’t it funny how people were complaining about a leak where the show runners said that they were limited in what they can use from G4… only to complete abandon that point when Spike dropped in the trailer? When you have no low hanging fruit you shake the tree.

Yup. Saw the first ten seconds and paused. We're doing MYM this afternoon.
I thought Spike looked fine, maybe a little like a Labrador. Of course all of the dragons looked a little like Labradors. His colors and signature spines looked fine. I like that they expanded on his teleportation fire much more.
Maybe in a future episode we'll see the other named dragons from G4 or get some backstory on what happened to them.
