Well, that's a first. · 4:21am Jul 1st, 2023

I rarely go to the theaters anymore. Two, maybe three times a year.

If a film really, really blows me away and I have a good paycheck, I'll go see it two (MLP Movie), three (Star Wars Rogue One), or even four (Big Hero 6) times. I think two of those times I had the theater completely to myself. But those were always weeks into the showings.

That has never, ever happened to me on opening night.

Took a friend across town to see this after work this evening when I thought that the power at my apartment was going to be out all night. Picked the last showing of the night to try and avoid the kids. I was not expecting for us to be the only two in the theater.

A cute, if somewhat predictable coming-of-age story.

I think a few marketing firms need to go defunct, because I know this wasn't the only film this year to have nearly non-existent marketing; the only reason I knew it existed was there was a trailer for it on the TV in my restaurant's lobby that has a rotating playlist of ads and trailers.

But hey, I enjoyed it. Not bad for $11 and a nerve-wracking drive home because half of the traffic lights and street lights in town are still out.

I've seen one, maybe two, bus stop posters for it during my work commute, and that's it. Can't tell if they were being cheap with the marketing or if they had very little faith in their own work.

I'll admit, I'm not the easiest person to reach with advertising anymore.

I don't have cable. I haven't watched local channels in nearly 18 years. I have YouTube Premium (no ads), and I have Firefox with uBlock.

I've seen like one or two ads for it on YouTube and that's it.

Wow. Dreamworks had a great year with The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots. If they had marketed this movie better it would have gotten a lot more traction.

I saw the trailer for this in a compilation of releases for this year. But yeah, it looked interesting although formulaic.
I was hoping it was going to be more though.

Has anyone else noticed how marketing has really gone down the drain after COVID? Seriously, I could count on one hand the number of actually decent trailers I've seen, even for good movies.

In all honesty, I'm curious to see how the anti-Disney crowd is going to react to this one (if they do at all), given that they've all but adopted Dreamworks as their mascot. Don't get me wrong, they've made some really great movies, but they're also making a live action remake of How to train your dragon.

Almost the same situation here.

I usually hear about things from YouTubers, forums, and blogs like this one.

I only heard about this movie from Mr.Enter's channel.

I only heard about this because of a trailer when we saw Spiderman. Usually I would have expected to hear something before that, but that was the first. Struck me as the kind of thing I might watch once it hits streaming. The character designs were a little off-putting to me. I think it's the fingers. They reminded me of the hot dog fingers in that one universe in Everything Everywhere All At Once! That was freaky.

I only know about it because one of my friends told me about it. Seen zero marketing in my day to day life.

The one time I was alone in a theater was with a re-release of Toy Story at my local cinema. So fun! Also, I saw Morbius with my Dad and we were the only 2 there!

I heard about that because of people making fun of it on the Internet.

I have seen Teenage Kraken three times in the cinema and I would see it again, I loved it and I hope that Dreamworks does a sequel or an animated series as happened with Kung Fu Panda and Home
