The Lackadaisy pilot is out! · 3:55pm Apr 10th, 2023

Lackadaisy began as a webcomic in 2006. But it was one of those over-ambitious, financially unsustainable webcomics like Romantically Apocalyptic, which I think couldn't produce enough income to justify the effort that went into each comic. The new comics came slower and slower, and eventually petered out.

Something of that scope really needs the kind of mass-market that only video can provide. So in 2020, Tracy Butler started a Kickstarter to make that happen. 5,957 backers pledged $330,256 in 1 month.

The fundraising later moved from Kickstarter to Backerkit over objections to Kickstarter's use of blockchain (??). There doesn't seem to be any way to fund further development now. There is another Backerkit launching in 91 days, which you can sign up to be notified of here.

What are your actual opinions on the finished product?

That is really good.

It's great at what it aspires to be--a fun, character-based action story about competing bootleggers during Prohibition, who are cats. The artwork is great; the setting is consistent. It isn't as serious about relationships and character growth as MLP aspired to be. I don't think there are any character arcs, nor attempts to deal with interpersonal problems beyond "grin and bear it." You do learn more about the backstories of Viktor and Mordecai throughout the comics, who are both brutal, but very different.

That takes me back...

I've got the first Lackadaisy print collection right here on my bookshelf. I honestly can't recall why: I never read the webcomic, and after reading the collection, I wasn't inspired to start...

Mike

I watched the pilot (never read the comic), and was very confused until the very end when I realized it was for a speakeasy. The animation was good, but it felt like it was going at a breakneck speed. Having said that, I hope it continues it looks marvelous and if off to a promising start.

I remain irked that the webcomic imploded mid-storyline in favor of this, but for what it was it was entertaining in the way Lackadaisy was always entertaining; a fun rump with anthropomorphic animals, in the classic Disney/Don Bluth mode of doing things but with more modern sensibilities when it comes to the writing. Everyone who worked on it should be real proud.

Man, I wanted to like this, but the dialogue made me rewind at least 4 times before I gave up

I would subscribe to whatever streaming service picks this up. We need more 'adult' animation that can tell a story, instead of just episodic humor.

It's got the pacing of a comedy, but nothing really "funny" happens. Just a lot of "stuff". So if it's not a comedy, I guess it's more about the wild action? But then again, the stakes sorta dissolved when I realized that no one was in any actual danger. Lots of heavy machine gun fire, but it becomes clear pretty quickly that no one is going to get hit. The "bad guys" don't seem to be worried at all about being fired at, and the good guys seem to be about as scared as you would be if you realized there was a wasp in your car.

Also, there's no one character that really endeared themselves to me. Take the first episode of MLP for example. All it took was 3 minutes of screen time, and I was in completely in love with Fluttershy. Twilight too. I cared about them instantly.

That being said, this show is gorgeous. Super easy on the eyes. And I think it has a lot of potential. But I'm not hooked yet.

Well, that's fair. The webcomic has a very subtle sense of humor, which is also a bit warped because sometimes it's about how a psychopathic killer like Mordecai deals with mundane problems. The characters are mostly one-dimensional, although I could say that about some main MLP chars (but won't bcoz I'd get death threats).
