Random Thoughts · 8:50am Aug 1st, 2023

My 7 year old LCD TV is dying :fluttercry:

They're only supposed to last 5 years but the internet mentioned "50,000 hours" & that's about 20 hours a day, 7 days a week & I don't watch near that much TV so I thought it would last longer. I can't get a new one until I get my SS check for August so I've been watching the -ING internet & some of what I saw inspired thought.

NAFTA.
Saw an extract of a 2016 Trump/Hilary debate & he mentioned NAFTA (North America Free Trade Agreement).

I've been watching online reviews. I'd recommend both
Critical Drinker (PG 13, profanity)
Pitch Meeting (rated G)
Drinker came down pretty hard on Disney for -ING with Peter Pan.

Disney has ALWAYS had a check list of
Things A Disney Movie Has To Have
& they've ALWAYS screwed with the original source material.

But, my God, Peter Pan is a children's book?! :twilightoops: Peter Pan Is a MONSTER! Disney sanitized the Hell out of that book.

Birth Control · 10:44am Jul 8th, 2023

Saw it on the internet.
Some woman was "Any woman can get birth control. ".

Well, NO they can't necessarily get birth control. It's LEGAL in all states (for now)

BUT

You need a prescription. 12 states allow doctors to refuse to provide it.

6 states allow pharmacists to refuse to sell it. You want to buy a gun, THAT they must sell you, but birth control they don't.

Youve got to pay for it

Not What They're Famous For, But.... · 8:40am May 26th, 2023

Johnathan "Johnny Appleseed" Chapman
Most famous for planting apple trees, he was also a business man & wealthy. Back then, you could claim land by planting 50 trees, so he did & then sold it. He lived as a homeless wanderer because he preferred to. He considered himself a missionary.

Stuff Learned Along The Way · 1:14pm May 20th, 2023

All cats can swim. Most hate to do it, but they are good swimmers.

Not all dogs can swim. A lot of the Toy Class dogs can't. Some who can't can be taught. Others can't.

Arthur C Clarke was openly gay. He moved from England to Sri Lanka (Ceylon) after WW2 because they were more tolerant of such things.

Asimov & Clarke are famous as Sci-fi writers. Both wrote far more nonfiction than fiction (all types). Heinlein wrote some nonfiction but mostly fiction.

USA Gun Laws In Arizona · 9:45pm May 9th, 2023

I caught some flack for saying
"In the USA, you can't get a LIBRARY CARD without a background check but in Arizona you can buy a LETHAL WEAPON without one.". So, I'm going to vent.

OK, for non USA readers
There are Federal laws which apply across the USA.

There are also 50 states, each of which can have its own laws, as long as they don't contradict Federal laws.

There can be substantial differences between one state and another.

The Big 3 (Sci-fi Writers) · 3:45am May 8th, 2023

As a Baby Boomer, most of the Sci-fi I grew up reading as a kid was written by either Greatest Generation 1901 to 1926. Remember the Great Depression & fought in WW2 or Lost Generation 1883 to 1900. Called that for WW1 casualties. with a few Silent Generation writers 1927 to 1945. Basically, those too young for WW2 & too old for Vietnam. like Harlan Ellison or Larry Niven and some older writers like Mary Shelley, Lord Dunsany or Frank

Military Service & POTUS · 3:31pm Apr 27th, 2023

WW2v& earlier, EVERY major US war produced at least 1 POTUS.
War of 1812 Andrew Jackson
WW1 Harry Truman
Since WW2, nothing.

Since George HW Bush, the closest would be W.

He was on active duty 1968-1974 as an aviator in the Texas National Guard.

He never got closer to combat than Texas plus shorted his required service by about 6 months. His family was politically connected enough that he never got in trouble for this.

Today (April 10, 2023) it hit 98 degrees Fahrenheit :pinkiegasp:

By law, the landlord doesn't HAVE TO turn on the AC until May 1. (For some reason the control panel is locked & we can't change the settings.)
