I've been watching online reviews. I'd recommend both
Critical Drinker (PG 13, profanity)
Pitch Meeting (rated G)
Drinker came down pretty hard on Disney for -ING with Peter Pan.
Disney has ALWAYS had a check list of
Things A Disney Movie Has To Have
& they've ALWAYS screwed with the original source material.
But, my God, Peter Pan is a children's book?! Peter Pan Is a MONSTER! Disney sanitized the Hell out of that book.
First off, the movie sort of implies that the Lost Boys dress as animals for fun. NO THEY DO NOT! They dress that way because Peter Pan explicitly made them do so under penalty of death. HE is the only one allowed to be human.
Next, he starved them to keep them from growing (supposedly to enable them to hide). You grow too big, he murders you.
He recruits new members by kidnapping children from Earth. Don't worry, he'll murder them too, eventually.
They get food by stealing it (from the Indians?). This isn't explicitly stated but they don't hunt or farm so where else can they get it? He also frequently pranks the Indians. I don't blame the Indians for being his enemy.
The pirates, well they're criminals, of course, but he feeds Captain Hook's hand to a crocodile & kills him too (the movie has Hook escape the crocodile).
You want a kids' book? Stick with the Disc World novels (Pratchett) (takes him a few to REALLY hit his stride) or the Myth books (Asprin). Get the Starblaze editions if possible because Foglio's artwork is excellent & always on point.
The Freddy the Pig novels are also great + Politically Correct which isn't a given for stuff from that era. Sadly, they are mostly Out of Print.
There are way better reviewers than Critical Drinker. That dude's rather full of himself.
