Spike had to read Twilightâs letter twice to fully comprehend.
âSheâs⌠a princess now?!â
The letter was passed around the other members of the Drake Six - even Diamondbackâs Diamond Dogs got a chance to see - but there was no denying her words:
âAfter a wild misadventure with an unfinished spell of Starswirlâs,â Night Fire read. âI - that is to say, Twilight - was blessed with the power of an alicorn, and given the title of Princess.â
Diamondback read over her shoulder. âPlease join me and my friends and family at the Crystal Empire, where the Princesses of Equestria are convening a summit in five days to decide my duties and role in the preservation and prosperity of Equestria.â She looked up at Spike with glee. âFirst a Royal Wedding and now a Princess Summit? My word, Spike, being your friend just opens up all sorts of wonderful opportunities, doesnât it?â
Spike didnât reply, sitting down in shock. âTwilight⌠a princess. I mean, I knew she always had dreams of making Celestia proud, but⌠a princess.â He glanced over at Night Fire, though she was quick to wave him off.
âWhoa-ho, donât think I got any answers, buddy,â she replied. âI left that life centuries ago.â
âItâs still a part of you,â Phoenix noted. âJust as itâs going to be a part of Twilightâs life.â
âWe need to go see her,â Jackknife noted. âWhatever sheâs becoming, sheâs still Spikeâs friend. That makes her our friend.â
âI imagine sheâd need that kind of support,â Swift noted, looking down with a sigh. âThe amount of pressure she might be underâŚâ
Spike flinched at that thought. Once, he had been her number one assistant. Always there to aid her in her work. Now, here she was about to become a princess, and she didnât have him.
âYeah,â he said. âLetâs go. We should be able to reach her just before the Summit starts.â
##
He was right;
Thanks to Night Fire, Swift and Diamondbackâs superb flying, the group reached the Crystal Empire right as their pony counterparts arrived by train.
Spike had to do a double take when he saw Twilight again; where once she was a quiet, bookish unicorn, now⌠she was still a quiet, bookish unicorn.
But one that now had wings.
âHe-ey,â Jackknife praised. âNice wings, Sparks.â He fist bumped Rainbow Dash. âYa got a new flying buddy, partner.â
âAlmost,â Rainbow Dash replied. âSheâs still got to work through the whole ânever been off the groundâ thing. But sheâs getting there.â
âThank goodness,â Fluttershy and Swift mumbled, before glancing at each other in shock.
âJinx,â Night Fire teased.
As Fluttershy and Swift waved Night off, Spike looked to Twilight. âHow are you doing?â
Twilight glanced at her wings. âExcited. Nervous,â she glanced up at the castle. âBut mostly nervous. Even with wings and a crown⌠Iâm not sure if I really âfeelâ like a princess.â
âWell, no wonder,â Diamondback noted, brushing the top of her head. âWhere is this crown?â
Rarity gasped. âYou havenât forgotten it back in Ponyville, have you, dearie?â
Before Swift or Diamondback could fly into a panic, Twilight quickly revealed the crown in her bag. âIâve got it,â she assured them. âI just⌠feel a little self-conscious about wearing it.â
âYou are a princess now, Twilight,â Rarity claimed. âEmbrace it!â
âYou wonât get used to it if you run from it,â Diamondback agreed.
âSo long as ya donât forget where ya came from,â Jackknife added. âDonât start becoming no snob that thinks sheâs too good fer her old friends.â
Spike chuckled. âNow that, Iâm sure she would never do that. Right?â
Twilight smiled. âRight.â
Yet, as the group made their way into the castle, a horn fanfare greeted them.
âHer highness, Princess Twilight Sparkle,â one of the guards announced, drawing the attention of the princesses.
Diamondback cleared her throat importantly, causing the guard to double take.
âOh, and, uh⌠and the Dragon Elements of Harmony!â
The horn fanfare wasnât as impressive as Twilightâs - a fact Spike was certain Diamondback noticed - but the princesses didnât give her time to complain, rushing over and greeting Twilight. Or, at least Celestia and Cadence did. Luna and Night Fire made a beeline for each other, conversing in quiet tones.
âTwilight!â Cadence laughed. âI havenât seen you since the coronation.â She looked to Spike. âAnd Spike, I havenât seen you for far longer.â She gave him a big hug, almost cracking his ribs.
âNice to see you too, Cadence,â Spike managed to squeak out.
âIt is good to see you all,â Celestia said with a smile.
âAnd you as well, Princess Celestia,â Diamondback greeted. âHave you used a de-aging spell. Youâre more radiant than ever.â
Celestia chuckled. âYou flatter me, Lady Diamondback. Iâm sure you and the rest of your friends have much to discuss and share.â
âLike you wouldnât believe,â Jackknife noted, pulling a blushing Swift close. âWhen I tell you guys what Swift here was doingâŚâ
âHang on, guys,â Spike said. âTwilight and the Princesses have things to discuss, donât they?â
âIndeed,â Celestia replied. âBut they can wait until tomorrow.â She stepped closer to Jackknife and Swift. âI personally am quite curious about your travels. Let us catch up before bed, shall we.â
âYes maâam,â Jackknife agreed, pulling Swift along. âNow, as I was saying about Swift hereâŚâ
As Jackknife regaled everyone with the tale of Swiftâs fight against the slavers of Kludgetown, Spike noticed Twilight hanging back with a sigh. He immediately went to her side.
âWhatâs wrong, Twilight?â
âI donât know,â she admitted. âIâm just⌠worried. Princess Cadence was given the Crystal Empire to rule over. What if, now that Iâm a princess, Celestia expects me to lead a kingdom of my own?â
Spike pondered it - leading a kingdom to him sounded pretty awesome - but then a small shadow fell over them.
âI donât think that would be a wise choice,â Phoenix noted.
Spike sighed. âPhoenix, Twilight⌠well⌠she isnâtâŚâ He wasnât sure how to say that she wasnât like how Phoenix had been.
Though Phoenix seemed to understand.
âShe may not be who I was,â Phoenix said. âBut it doesnât mean she wonât make mistakes.â She looked to Twilight. âLeadership is a massive responsibility, Twilight. And the more people you lead, the harder it will be.â
Spike gave Twilight a worried look, and indeed, she was turning a pale shade of green. He nudged Phoenixâs side. âCan you not make my friend sick with worry?â
âIâm only giving the truth,â Phoenix replied. âBut, if it helpsâŚâ she gave Twilight a sincere smile. âCelestia wouldnât have chosen you if she didnât think you could handle the job, Twilight. Youâve never stopped trying to make her proud, why stop now?â
Twilight managed a faint grin of her own. âThanks, Phoenix,â she replied, before following after the others.
Spike and Phoenix watched her go, before Phoenix looked down with a sigh. Spike noticed.
âThanks,â he said. âI know you probably just said what she wanted to hearâŚâ
âIf I lied, I wouldnât be a very good Element of Honesty, would I?â Phoenix noted.
âElements can stumble,â Spike replied. âI remember when they went up against Discord. The chaos spirit managed to get Applejack lying like a regular con-artist.â
Phoenix gave a nervous swallow. âSounds like I should try and avoid Discord.â
Spike noticed an odd inflection of fear in her voice. He pat her side. âYou okay?â
Phoenix gazed down at him. âYou guys gave me a second chance,â she said. âAt life. At friends⌠at home.â She hugged him. âI donât want to waste it.â
Spike hugged her back. âThen donât,â he said, pulling her along. âCâmon. Letâs see what the others have been up to while weâve been away.â
Smiling slightly, Phoenix followed after Spike as they joined their friends.
##
That night, Spike was sleeping soundly, dreaming of a massive pile of gems; Diamondback and Rarity waiting just for himâŚ
He was jarred out of his dreams as a hoof stepped on his tail. He shot up, seeing a strange figure stumble for the door.
A glint of gold vanishing under some kind of cloak.
âHey!â Spike yelled, but the figure bolted out the door.
âMy crown!â Twilight yelled. Spike briefly turned to see Twilight staring at her nightstand. Her crown had been placed there. And technically was still there.
Except⌠wait! Spike saw that the crown on the nightstand had no jewels. It didnât sparkle the same way the original had.
It all clicked as Twilight pointed to where the figure was vanishing out her door. âSheâs got my crown!â
Spike surged out of bed. âStop!â he yelled. âThief!â As he burst out, he bellowed down the hallway. âTHIEF! SOMEONEâS STEALING TWILIGHTâS CROWN!â
The rest of the Mane Six stumbled out groggily, but Night Fire was instantly out and racing after the thief.
âAw, hell yeah!â Night Fire declared gleefully. âFinally, some action!â
âAction-hog!â Jackknife yelled, appearing out of the ground to block the figureâs way. âHo, now, you whipper-snapper! There is no escape!â
The figure proved him wrong by teleporting, causing the cloak they were wearing to smack right into Jackknifeâs face. As he ripped the cloak to shreds, the others took off after him, Twilight teleporting in front of the thief, only for the thief to dodge around her.
However, as the thief reformed from dodging Twilight, Night Fire took advantage and tackled into the thief, sending both of them tumbling into some sort of store room containing a variety of objects, including a strange mirror.
As Night Fire and the thief tumbled to the ground, Twilightâs crown flew out of the thiefâs bag, bouncing right for the mirror.
Phoenix barreled through the door. âI got it!â she yelled, snatching the crown right as she stumbled into the mirror.
Spike flinched, expecting her to break the mirror, but instead⌠Phoenix sunk right through, almost like the surface was water.
âPHOENIX!â Spike and the other dragons yelled.
Night Fire hoisted the thief up and slammed her against the wall. âWhat did you do with our friend!â she snarled.
âAnd my crown!â Twilight added, aiming her sparking horn at the thief.
The thief managed a snide grin. âSorry it had to be this way, Princess.â She said the word with such utter loathing that Spike backed up, ready for some sort of attack.
But instead, the thief let loose with a flash of light, teleporting out of Night Fireâs grip and over to the mirror. Before the others could stop her, she jumped through the strange portal and out of sight.
âHey!â Night Fire yelled, but Swift stopped her from jumping through, while Diamondback did the same for Jackknife.
âLemme go!â Jackknife yelled. âWe gotta help Phi!â
âWe donât know what that mirror is!â Diamondback refuted. âOr what it did to her. We need the Princesses.â
Spike grimaced at the thought of Phoenix being left alone, but he nodded. âSheâs right. The Princesses will know what this is.â
âAnd maybe who that was as well,â Fluttershy added.
#
They were right.
âSunset Shimmer,â Celestia said morosely. âA former student of mine. She began her studies with me not long before Twilight. But when she did not get what she wanted as quickly as she liked, she became cruel and dishonest.â She gazed at the mirror solemnly. âI tried to help her, but she eventually decided to abandon her studies and pursue her own path.â She turned to Twilight. âOne that has sadly led to her stealing your crown.â
âAnd replacing it with this shoddy knockoff,â Diamondback noted, holding the fake crown with a glower of disgust.
âItâs a classic thiefâs move,â Night noted, taking the crown herself. âReplace it with a fake, and by the time people notice the truth, youâre long gone.â
âBut I donât understand,â Twilight said. âWhere did she go?â
âAnd more importantly, whereâd she take Phoenix?â
Celestia gazed at the mirror with trepidation. âYouâll soon know more than I do.â
âTruly,â Luna agreed. âThis is no ordinary mirror; but a gateway to another world. One that opens every thirty moons.â
Swift gasped. âSo, Phoenix is⌠in another world?â
âIndeed,â Celestia said. âOne that Sunset Shimmer has seemed to make her own, rather than staying here where I couldâve found her.â
âThen our goal is clear,â Night Fire noted. âGo into this new world, find Phoenix, make sure she still has the crown, and then get back before Sunset can stop us.â
âIndeed,â Cadence agreed. âWithout the Elements of Magic or Honesty, neither of your sets will be able to channel their power. Equestria - no, the entire world - will be left without one of its most important means of defense.â
âAnd if Sunset Shimmer manages to take the crown from Phoenix,â Luna added. âShe will no doubt use it to bring harm to the inhabitants of this other realm. They will not have the power to defend themselves.â
âThen what are we waiting for,â Rainbow Dash asked. âLetâs go!â
Celestia grimaced. âIâm afraid I canât let you go.â
âWhat?â Rainbow Dash demanded.
âWhy?â Jackknife asked. âSheâs our friend.â
âSending all of you could upset the balance of this alternate world,â Celestia explained. âIt could create havoc that will make it impossible for anyone to get the crown back.â She gazed at Twilight. âIâm sorry, Twilight, but this is something you must do alone.â
Twilight shivered. Unable to see his friend - no his big sister - so scared, Spike stepped up.
âIâm going with her at the very least,â he said. âPhoenix is my friend, and I carry the Dragon Element of Magic. One more of us canât do that much damage.â
Celestia looked unsure, but Luna stepped up.
âWe donât have time to argue this,â she noted. âTime is of the essence. On the third day, when the moon reaches its peak, the gateway will close. And once it does, it will be another thirty moons before you will be able to use it to return.â
Spike nodded and took Twilightâs hand. âThen câmon, Twilight,â he said. âLetâs get our friend back.â
As he and Twilight stepped through the portal, Spike set his jaw in determination.
âHang on, Phoenix,â he said. âWeâre coming for you.â
##
âOh, you poor thing,â Fluttershyâs voice whispered.
Phoenixâs eyes opened with a groan. She was lying on some sort of grassy field, with FluttershyâŚ
Wait a minute. Phoenixâs eyes shot up. That was Fluttershy⌠and yet it wasnât.
She stood bipedal; wearing a white tank top and a green dress skirt. One hand clutched Twilightâs crown, the other reached out to touch Phoenixâs head⌠and as the strange humanoid Fluttershy rubbed Phoenixâs ears, Phoenix realized she didnât have horns.
She looked down. Her body⌠it⌠there was no way it couldâve happenedâŚ
âDonât worry,â Fluttershy soothed. âIâll take care of you.â
Phoenix could only stare up at the human Fluttershy in disbelief. This was beyond karmic justice.
Somehow, someway, the portal had turned Phoenix into a dog. Just like the very diamond dogs she had abused.
And though this new version of Fluttershy seemed kind, she still stood taller than Phoenix. As did several other similarly humanoid creatures. For once, she was now just as small and weak as the dogs she had once hurt.
Phoenix laughed at the irony.
So dragons are still dogs when in the human world?
That is really disappointing..
Hey there. Thanks greatly for getting this next chapter up. Really appreciate the effort going into the exchanges, characterizations, action and future chapter set-up. I really appreciate the start on this spin on Equestria Girls. Definitely liked the dragons' reactions to Twilight's ascension (and, yeah, it would be easy to visualize the Cutie Mark Crusaders giving Twilight that helpful advice to motivate her to fix the mess caused by that miscast spell (as two of the Crusaders are the little sisters of two of the Mane Six and the third is a little sister FIGURE to a third) in Spike's understandable absence (given how busy he has been with the rest of the Drake Six). And Phoenix recognizing the irony of her being a dog now was another great detail.
Quite certainly looking forward to more of this.

Always happy to share.
Good idea about the Crusaders being the ones who helped Twilight in Spike's place; that makes so much sense that I want it to be mentioned in the next chapter.
Also glad you liked Phoenix's reaction. This is pretty much going to be her adventure as she tries to help Spike and Twilight with Sunset, and I'm really eager to show how Phoenix is going to learn and develop from her adventures as a dog.
Until next time. đ
11611224
Yep. Like in canon.
And it'll help my character Phoenix with her character arc.
11611397
But its really disappointing since its saying dragons are lower beings than ponies(especially when literally every other race gets to be humans. Including literal Diamond DOGS) despite dragons are sapient too.
And the fact it really restricted Spike when he was stuck as a dog in EQG
11611500
And yet Spike still figured out ways to help despite being a dog.
Phoenix will do the same.
11611543
Still badly restricted.
And left out on what the girls get to do.
Heck, can't really properly interact with others because people will flip about talking dogs AND the "no pets allowed" usually confines him to a backpack.
His human-world counterpart suffers this worse
Still seems wrong EQG made dragons into dogs since they are sapient.
Especially when every other race gets to be humans
