Alphas do not mate with other alphas, and Sunset knows that. Unfortunately, a mishap between her and Rainbow Dash have put the two alphas in a complicated relationship.
I've read the primer you linked, and I'm about to commit one if not the gravest sin in an Omegaverse story: I'm going to ask for worldbuilding details
Are they full package or only dickgirls? If the latter, how the heck do people differ between an alpha female and an alpha/beta male? Or between an omega/beta female and an omega male (considering any kind of consistency in the world so that if alpha = dick and no pussy then omega = pussy and no dick, no matter the gender)? Do they do it by genetic testing? If so, what did they do before? Is it some kind of weird EQG wold magic that always allow them to know? If /d/girls only, why that choice? Purely porn or future developments?
Sure, there has been no mention to it and one would likely imagine they're not full package because it'd have come up, but I wouldn't put it beyond Shimmer to even in this situation keep her wits about her and don't risk a pregnancy - the spreadsheed does list is as a "maybe" after all. But then again, she IS an equestrian and I wouldn't put it beyond the Power of Love to awaken some of her horny horse powers and allow for... changes in Rainbow.
This reads hot, yes, but also as an interesting look at a different enough biology as to be another culture and species, and that makes it considerably more interesting. The budding relationship will conflict oh so much with Fluttershy's possible admission as her beta, and as humans don't do herds the inevitable rejection's going to be heartwrenching as fuck
10103165 So in the Omegaverse the ‘Alpha/Beta/Omega’ dynamic is the physical, procreative sex assignment. Alphas are the ‘male’ side of procreation, while Omegas are the ‘Female’ side. Betas are a third sex that can fill either role without suffering the hormonal extremes of the breeding pairs, but are also less fertile.
Allowing for the fact that sex and gender both exist as a gradient, Alpha females and Alpha males are approximately the same physiological sex, but differ in gender presentation. Same with Betas/Omegas.
As for the story? I have Sunset and Rainbow this way for story reasons. It’s actually a major plot point when Fluttershy’s enters the stage later on.
And yeah, the crux of this story explores the relationship dynamics of their society and the expectations of an Alpha.
10103422 At puberty they present as either Alpha, Beta, or Omega. I’m currently working on Ch.3, so that’s coming soon sometime. So when Fluttershy hit puberty she presented as Omega, Sunset presented as an Alpha but matured late because of her transition into the human world.
10103367 Wait, just realized that you said that betas can fill "either side". Does that mean that all betas are hermaphrodites? The societal implications of that combined with reduced fertility are rather staggering.
10106039 The answer to this tends to differ fic by fic based on the author's interpretation. Personally, I write betas as having a defined physical sex but being able to change that sex over time. In some cases this can be due to a shift in identity, in others it can be out of species necessity. So rather than being both at the same time, they have the ability to become one or the other. This also means that Betas can often favor physical androgyny or even possess a total lack of romantic and/or sexual attraction.
Since I'll probably never go into this in the fic, I'll give a rundown here. Physiologically Alphas, Betas, and Omegas function as something called a Clade, which is a society of parallel evolutionary branches evolving to function together. Think like if the various branches of the primate family evolved to work together instead of killing each other off, so you have the homo sapien sapien in the same time period as homo neanderthalus, etc...
Alphas are a physically powerful breed, but evolved into infertility due to their parallel evolution alongside the hyperfertile Omegas. Between the two of them were the physiologically morphic and flexible Betas that acts as an intermediary, both physiologically and societally, often serving as nannies, middle-men, and counselors, due to their milder hormonal extremes, which made it easier for them to think beyond their instincts which often ruled the more volatile Alphas and Omegas.
And there you go! I've put way too much thought into this!
10106869 I'm an addict to world building, putting way too much thought into things is awesome.
So alphas are nearly infertile? Interesting. Considering the hormonal influence you mentioned I'd bet science and production is mainly done by betas, although in modern times with suppressors omegas and alphas can get into it, at least the milder ones. Wars in the past must mainly be waged by the alphas, and a Joan D'Arc would be an omega - but a really "weak" one, if at all possible.
How is the population split? If reproduction is mainly done by omegas they likely have more than three children a piece, and every society evolved with some kind of support structure for such. Maybe it's commonplace for them to put children into beta adoption? Even with instincts I can imagine there are quite a number of them that don't want to live their lives as breeding machines, if they're around 20% or so of the total. And what about alphas?
Sure, the porn's great, but finding out about a whole new world and it's intricacies is a whole other pleasure, oh so rare.
10106869 I wouldn't say "way too much", given that sort of thought is a major reason I'm interested in this story. :D
So as I understand it, in this particular universe, alphas have male genitalia, omegas have female genitalia, betas are sequential hermaphrodites, and all three can have varying secondary sex characteristics and genders?
Of course, you're also actually writing about two different species with this characteristic, even if I expect the "humans" will take up the great majority of the attention; I'm wondering what other differences there might be between them, besides the mentioned lower intensity of pony reproductive hormonal cycles.
10106904 ... Also, I just realized, kind of a funny coincidence... [looks at usernames, avatars, and content of comments] :D
But yes, I, too, have been known to enjoy a good bit of worldbuilding. :)
This is weird and I'm curious enough to keep reading. It's such an overly fleshed out... kink/fetish?
It's different and I do like sub-dom dynamics and futa so this is pretty close to hitting my mark. It's when physical differences like pheromones and knotting gets involved I remember what the hell I'm reading.
Plus I'm a sucker for Sunset Shimmer and Rainbow Dash.
10140914 The whole Alpha/Beta/Omega dynamics is a really fleshed out collection of tropes in other parts of the internet actually. Check the tag out on Archive of Our Own sometime, it's especially popular in the Overwatch fandom. There's a lot of Pharah/Mercy fics in that subset.

Oh, interesting, very interesting indeed. I'm oh so curious for that now. Well, more curious, when can we get more?
Gotta say I do love a look at a whole new societal dynamic. Certainly a favorite
Edit: wait, how do they know someone's a beta before puberty? Or is the finding out you're a alpha/beta/omega the mark of said puberty?
nice work on both chapters out so far
