Nightmare Moon

It’s been sixteen years since that day. Since he came to this world. Since he made that promise to Khrusalis… not that it mattered anymore. The passing of the seasons have not been kind to Skystrike. Death, like a shadow, seemed to follow him wherever he went. First, the humans he escaped from, then his family, and finally, his friends. And each time, he did what he felt was safest for them. Left. Knowing he was the common denominator, all danger to them would cease as long as he disappeared. And so he did.

At the ripe age of twenty four, Skystrike was a ghost, a memory to those he once held close. Khrusalis wanted to change his disposition towards ponies, and got him set up at an orphanage for a few years. A perfect place to hide, where no one- nopony would question his existence, nor sudden appearance. But he got on a pony’s bad side. And that family he grew close to was in harm's way. He barely got the others out before it collapsed in on him. But at that time, that was Skystrike’s first step.

Faking his death, he started another new life. With nothing to his name, he began to work under the table. Line cook, bouncer, cage fighter, no job, as long as it put food in his belly, was above him. But he found his break in bounties. Problems that the guard were slow to handle, or that were on the edge of the thin line of legality, he took. Influenced in no small part to his… history. He met a stallion, who took Skystrike under his metaphorical wing. He was a good stallion, one who always put his morals, and others, before himself. But Steel Ace was too good for this world. He met an early grave… Skystrike didn’t want to think about that right now, even if the justice he executed was a bittersweet memory.

The Changeling hive shunned his existence, but he didn’t blame them, he blamed himself too. The queen was gone, taken before her time, and it was his fault. But she still wanted him to keep the promise they made. At the time, Skystrike wondered if it would even be worth it anymore, but then he found his friends. Eventually, each joined him in his travels.

It was Khrusalis’ dream, and eventually morphed into his own dream. A place where beings could come together, no matter the background, nor race. A Pegasus, an Earth pony, a Unicorn, a Dragon, a Zebra, a Griffon, a Diamond Dog, a Hippogriff, and an Avian. Each of them having a past that they initially didn’t want to share, but the bonds through battle made them grow closer. It was a place where each of them felt they belonged. But he had to destroy that sanctuary they made, to save them. They were attacked because of him. Skystrike almost lost everything once more. He wouldn’t take any more chances.

There were too many he couldn’t save.

It’s been a few months since he disbanded his group… No, time hasn’t been too kind, it’s been over a year. No matter how many times he wanted to get these memories out of his head, he couldn't get the scratching whispers away from the back of his skull. He didn’t have anything else to live for, save for the next meal. He gained a reputation over the jobs he’s taken. Atlas Nebula was his alias, and he’s who’d one go to if there was too little information, or if there were no other option. Death, like a shadow, followed wherever he went.

But he didn’t want that anymore. Sure, he saved many, but what’s the point in saving strangers if he couldn’t protect those he deemed close? So, after months of wagering, thinking on what to do, he made a decision.

He would die. By his own hand. So he wouldn’t put anyone else in danger.

But Skystrike had one more thing to do. It started when he thought back to his family at the orphanage. ‘The Church of the Two Sisters’ was its name, with the mural having Celestia on it. It never made sense to him how the mural had one pony, yet the name implied there were two. So, he began doing his research. Over the past couple months, he visited any and nearly all the libraries in Equestria, hoping it wasn’t a wild goose chase and there was actually something to it.

And there was. First, a history book he found in the Royal Canterlot Library. Though it wasn’t a well guarded secret, many didn’t know that Celesita, the princess of the sun, had a sister, who’s name was forgotten to time. She was in charge of the moon. The childhood story everypony knows, picks up from there, the younger sister of the moon growing resentful of her sister and the sun. In an attempt to hold off the everlasting night, Celestia banished her own blood, changed by her bitterness, to the moon. Though she couldn’t do it with her own power, requiring relics of a past time known as ‘The Elements of Harmony’.

That led him on a chase from city to city. He couldn’t explain it, it just… felt like it was something he must do. After all, legends must come from somewhere. And so he found an answer. In another book on the old era of Equestria. On the longest day of the thousandth year, the bitter princess of the night, Nightmare Moon would return to take what she believed is rightfully hers. It was the thousandth year, and the summer solstice was months away.

He wouldn’t let that happen. Not without a fight.

And Skystrike knew he had to anyway. The Elements of Harmony were long gone, forgotten to history. Celestia needed them to defeat her. But over the years, even living as a pony, he knows that he has more than enough strength to give this Nightmare Moon a hard time. With his magic, it may just be possible to squeeze out a win. And all he needed to know was where she was going to return.

From the Unicorn of his group, he remembered some important magic knowledge that she told him. She had her theories about how a banishment worked, as well as some supporting evidence that he should’ve asked about… Oh well, too late now… But his best bet was going to the place where the spell was initially casted.

Skystrike sat with his luggage as he rode a train. He just finished getting payment from his last mission in Las Pegasus. He flipped one of the bits in his hoof as the rhythmic thumping of train tracks continued. The former capital of Equestria, where the two Celestial Sisters had their last showdown, was in the Everfree Forest, a forest notorious for the monsters and unnatural phenomena that happened within. Just on the edge of that forest sat a village, Ponyville, and that was his current destination.

He had everything he needed with him. A large rucksack, twice the size of his already gargantuan stature housing it all. Skystrike looked out of the window, noticing the night slowly turning to day before him. He sighed and searched his bag for a premade meal, fishing out a sandwich and beginning to eat. The pegasus knew he had a few hours before he reached Ponyville. Before he got on the train, he decided to make a promise to himself.

If Nightmare Moon doesn't come back, then that’s it. Ending things where they were.

If Nightmare Moon does come back, he’d fight with all he had. If he died at her hooves, so be it. But if he lived through it, he’d give life one more try.

A few hours passed as he slowly ate his sandwich, trying to keep the thoughts of self loathing out of his mind. He felt the train slow to a stop, then a blaring of the train whistle, notifying their arrival. Another sleepless night it seemed. With a yawn, Skystrike stood up and put the rucksack on his back, walking off the train.

Before he got off the train platform, he stopped by one of the booths, empty of a train teller, and looked at his reflection on the glass. The black dragon-esque helmet he came to this world with sat on his head for months at this point. He barely remembered the last time he took it off. His blue mane faded to a dark navy blue, spilling out the back of his helmet. It was long. He needed to cut it. Still looking at his reflection, he noticed a smudge on his plate armor. It was the same color as his helmet, raven black being his calling card, and he was covered head to hoof in it, save for his wings.

If he was going to be here for a couple months, Skystrike decided he at least wanted a place to himself. Besides, if he dies, he’d have a place he could give to the orphanage or something. Finally walking off the train platform, he began walking through the town, taking in the scenery. Dirt roads splintered every which way. Despite the place being relatively small, it was surprisingly easy to get lost. The typical houses had frames of timber and thatch roofs, most having several floors. From it being so early in the morning on a Monday, he expected the local farmers market to have at least some ponies walking around, but the streets and stalls were empty.

He wasn’t surprised. Everywhere he went, he wasn’t truly welcome. Before, however, he didn’t plan on sticking around. Skystrike heard hoofsteps, all stopping as he moved from place to place. It was expected. He sighed as he kept walking. With no pony to give him directions, he wandered for nearly an hour before stumbling on what he assumed was the town hall. He turned the handle, opening the door and coming face first with the first pony he’s seen today.

With a coat of grayish amber and a gray and silver mane, the earth pony mare took a warry step back. “Ah… H-hello t-there… You startled me.” She looked at Skystrike looming over her. In her eyes, Skystrike was a monster of a Stallion, triple her size, and with a reputation to boot. “W-wh-what brings you to our… fine town?”

Skystrike craned his neck down to be eye height with her. “I… apologize if I have frightened you.” His voice was dry. “Forgive me for my speech, I haven’t… spoken to another in quite some time.” He cleared his throat. “I wish to buy some land… who can I go to to do so?”

The mare pulled at her collar. “O-oh! I can assist. I’m Mayor Mare, mayor of Ponyville.” Her attitude noticeably changed to a more professional one. “I’d be happy to help you with that. What do you have in mind?”

“I wish for space… a distance away from the main part of town. I wish to be alone. Most ponies aren’t welcoming of my company. A body of water nearby would be… ideal.”

Mayor Mare’s ears went back. “W-well, I am sorry to say, the only land that matches those off the top of my head is next to the Everfree Forest. If you wish, I could look for other-”

“No need.” Skystrike cut her off. “I will take it. How much land and how much will it be?”

“The size is about… ten acres, but a third has been taken over by the forest. Because of that, the price is lower, but most don’t wish to live next to a place so dangerous. As for the cost, twenty thousand bits… would you like to speak about it further in my office?”

Skystrike shook his head. “I am… aware that my presence makes you uneasy. Tell me where the land is. I will tour it myself. I can come back another time for the paperwork.”

Mayor Mare hid a sigh of relief. “On the path to the west of Ponyville, it’s just at the edge of the forest. From the forest entrance to the river leading to the large pond, the land in between is yours… Could you come by the same time tomorrow?”

Skystrike nodded, then stepped out of the doorway and closed the door behind him. He remembered the words she said. West Ponyville was where the Everfree was. Turning towards that direction, he began walking.

In about half an hour, he made it to his destination. The land that was soon to be his was riddled with overgrowth. Trees, both dead and alive, were dotted around the land, as well as shrubs that he’d need to uproot. Several stones of varying sizes were littered across the field that he’d need to pull up as well. He was fine with this. It gave him something to do.

Before he got to work, he’d need to set up camp. A lone tree stood next to the edge of the pond. A decent place to start a camp. He drew one of his swords, the blackened metal reflecting the sun's rays off of it. With a swift slash, he cut down some bushes next to the tree and put down his rucksack on the base of the tree.

He stretched as he began to gather a set of stones, then digging a small hole in the ground. Surrounding the hole with the stones, he had the start of a fire pit. All that was left was the wood. It didn’t take him long to gather the dead branches and logs, stacking them to the side for later.

He got more wood to set up a small cooking station above the fire pit. A place to boil water, a place to wash food, a place to sit, and a place to sleep. It’s all he’s really needed for the past while.

Next, he’d start getting to work clearing out the larger rocks and boulders. Some were easy enough to roll out of the way into a pile on the roadway, being no larger than a filly. Others required much more effort. The one he was currently having a go at felt like it was a few feet deep in the ground. He got some of the rope he carried out of his bag and began to tie it several times around this specific rock, making sure it was secure, then doing the same around his chest.

Once done, he began walking away from the rock, pulling with the weight of his body. After a little bit of trying, the boulder came out, notifying him with the rumbling earth and cracking branches. Looking back, the boulder was the size of a wagon, most of the mass now revealed and above ground. He huffed, glad that was the biggest one, hopefully.

Rolling his shoulders, Skystrike kept pulling. This was much easier, as he only needed to drag the boulder to the side. But this was interrupted by something he saw approaching in the distance. An orange earth pony mare with a blonde mane and tail approached, her face hidden by her brown stetson on her head.

Now he had a thought in his mind. Should he talk to her? On one hoof, it’d be getting to know his neighbors. On the other… he knew that they would never truly accept him. Was there a point?

“Uh… Howdy?” The mare said as she made eye contact with him.

Skystrike blinked. “...Apologies… Didn’t mean to stare.”

“S’alright.” She tipped her hat. “I’m Applejack. Can’t say I’ve seen ya ‘round these parts before.”

Skystrike saw her attempt at making small talk and decided to reciprocate. “Ah, yes. I’ve just gotten here earlier this morning. My name is Atlas Nebula.” He put a hoof on his chest and gave a polite bow. “It is… a pleasure.”

“I can tell from the accent you’re from Canterlot. What’s gotten you down here ‘n Ponyville?”

“I… I have my reasons. I do not wish to worry you with my own woes. For now, I am clearing out this land for my eventual residence.” Skytrike began untying the ropes on the rock.

“Oh, so you plan on movin’ in! Pinkie Pie will love to know you’re here!”

“Who is this ‘Pinkie Pie’ and what does meeting her entail?” Skystrike asked.

“Well, every time somepony new comes to Ponyville, she throws ‘em a party where everyone in town comes to greet ya!”

Skystrike hummed. “The offer is appreciated, but I do not believe that is a good idea.” He noticed the mare’s ears pointed up. “The welcome I received today was telling…, as none wished to be in my presence.” He hid his sigh. “If, knowing this, this Pinkie Pie wishes to throw a party, then I will not stop her. I will attend.”

Applejack stuttered. “W-well I know for sure I’ll be there. Ya seem to be an alright guy. If you want, I can show ya ‘round town, or my farm! The apple family farm is a big part of Ponyville’s history!”

“I… may take you up on that offer. I am available anytime you wish. Though as you are a farmer, would it be too much to ask to borrow some tools? An axe would be enough.”

“Of course, partner! I was just on my way to meet a friend of mine, but after, I’ll give you a tour!”

Skystrike pulled the ropes off of him. “Very well. I… shall await here for your return.”

Applejack shuffled in place. “Well… uh… you’re welcome to come with me. It’d be nice to meet the neighbors.”

Skystrike thought about it, deciding to take her up on that offer. “Very well. Lead the way, Applejack.”

And thus, a very silent, very awkward walk commenced. Awkward enough for even Skystrike to notice. He at least attempted some small talk. “So… Nice hat.” God that sucked, the fuck is wrong with him?

“Oh, well thank ya!” She beamed. “I got it from my pa, rest his soul.”

Skystrike winced. “Ah… I apologize for bringing up a bad memory.”

The silence was deafening. Applejack took awkward glances at Skystrike next to him, while the pegasus himself tried his best to avoid eye contact. So much for first impressions. After a few minutes, they stopped in front of a large cottage on the other side of the Everfree Forest. The house was the same as the ones in downtown Ponyville, though there were some noticeable differences. Whoever lived here seemed to welcome the overgrowth, with greenery replacing the thatch roofs, and hanging bird houses every which way he looked.

Applejack knocked on the door of the cottage, waiting a few moments for the resident to respond. A pale yellow pegasus with a pink mane opened the door just enough to see her friend. “Oh, good morning Applejack. How have you-...” She pushed open the door further to see Skystrike standing there. Terrified wasn’t a strong enough word to describe what the mare was feeling as she seemed to freeze in place.

Skystrike also froze, but more in surprise. He spent about a year in Cloudsdale as a colt, and this one seemed familiar. Only place he’d know her from was flight school… Maybe he’s just overthinking things.

The two stared at each other before Applejack cleared her throat. “Fluttershy, this is Atlas Nebula, who just moved into Ponyville. Atlas, this is Fluttershy.”

Skystrike put a hoof to his chest and gave a courteous bow. “A pleasure.”

Fluttershy squeaked out words, but they were so quiet that they were incomprehensible.

“You’ll have ta forgive her.” Applejack started. Fluttershy quickly jerked forward to slam her door shut. “She’s… a bit shy. It’s nothing personal.”

He doubted that. “It is alright. I am… used to it by now.” Skystrike said with a sigh. “I will take my leave and allow you two to spend some time together.”

And before Applejack could protest, Skystrike quickly left, going back to his side of the forest. It was definitely her. Hasn’t changed much over the years, but it was good to see her again doing well. But he wouldn’t take any chances. If he could help it, that would be the only interaction that they would have.

No point in putting her in danger.

So he got back to work, moving the larger rocks out of the way. A simple, yet tedious process. He hoped that it’d take his mind off things. He grew to learn that intellect was a blessing, and a curse. To strive for greater things was of course, great, but life was also much simpler without. Back in the lab, all he needed to focus on was surviving until the next meal. Now, he has to make decisions. And few would be thankful for his sacrifices. The guilt ate away at him each day, as if trying to make him regret his past choices.

But it would not make him falter. Skystrike made the best decisions he could with the information he had. What ifs will not make his actions go away.

It was midday now, and the last of the rocks were cleared from his land. Taking a break, he sat atop the pile of rocks he made, reaching about ten feet high, watching the scenery before him. The grass encompassed the many hills in the distance, dancing as the wind blew between. A couple rabbits hopped around, making sure to keep a safe distance from the Everfree. He spread his wings slightly to let the rushing air flow through. It did feel nice.

He could see the same orange mare from earlier come once more. She approached Skystrike once more, looking up at him. Skystrike stood up and jumped down to greet her, landing in front of Applejack with a thump. “Hello again, Applejack. Your visit went well, I assume?”

“Yeah… Sorry about her. She’s actually a really sweet mare once you get to know her.” She scratched the back of her head.

“Maybe there will be another time we could… meet again on better terms.” Skystrike stretched.

Applejack looked past him to the rock pile he got down from. “Golly, you did all that this morning?” Skystrike nodded. “Well I’ll be… ya may just give my brother a run for his money.”

“Speaking of…” Skystrike cracked his neck. “I assume this is where you show me around your farm?”

Applejack nodded. “Yessiree! Sweet Apple Acres is home to the best apples in Equestria. We’ll have to walk through Ponyville to get to it.” Then she clapped her hooves together. “Hey! I can introduce you to my friends while we’re there!”

Skystrike winced under his helmet. It probably wouldn’t go well. “...Very well… I welcome the offer.”

And once again, the two began to walk, this time towards the village. Once again, ponies seemed to run away at the sight of him. Skystrike saw Applejack’s ears go back, and a nervous smile grew on her face. The pegasus tried to not let his annoyance show.

But he had more interesting things to comment on. In front of him was… hard to describe. It seemed to be a giant gingerbread house with a chocolate roof and a cupcake spire in the middle. It was definitely eye-catching. His attention was brought to Applejack. “Welcome to Sugarcube Corner! The best, and only bakery and confectionery in Ponyville.”

Skystrike stared at the building, then turned to her. “Sugarcube… Corner? It’s in the middle of a roundabout.”

Applejack turned to look at the building. “Huh… y’know, I never thought about that.”

Skystrike was about to walk in before he was flashbanged by a bright ball of pink. Near instantaneously, Skystrike jumped out of the way spreading his wings to slow his fall as he planted his hooves in a defensive stance. Several yards away, where he once was, a pink earth pony with a darker pink mane, her face planted in the dirt below. She pushed herself up, her face stretching from the ground before snapping back to form like a cartoon. “Aw, you missed my ‘Welcome to Ponyville’ hug!”

Skystrike clicked his tongue. “Do not do that again, ma’am.” Applejack and the pink mare felt the anger in his voice as their ears went back. Skystrike sighed and stood up straight. “I… apologize for that. I didn't mean to frighten you…” He put a hoof on his chest and bowed. “I am Atlas Nebula. A pleasure to meet you, friend of Applejack.”

The pink one's attitude quickly changed, rapidly approaching the pegasus and stopping mere inches away from his face. “It’s alright! I’m Pinkie Pie! Are you new here? I heard from the mayor that you plan on moving in! Where are you staying? Do you-”

Pinkie Pie was stopped by Applejack’s hoof in her mouth. “Pinkie, breathe.”

She took a deep inhale as Skystrike began to answer her questions. “I am new here… I arrived this morning. For now, I have… set up camp outside of the Everfree.”

“You plan on camping out in front of the Everfree Forest!??” Applejack’s jaw dropped. “I know you aren’t from ‘round here, but do you know how dangerous that place is?”

“Yeah!” Pinkie jumped in. “Why don’t you find a hotel?”

Skystrike sighed. “Aside from the mayor…, you two are the only ponies to approach and speak to me. All the stalls in the market were also empty when I arrived… Thus, one can… see why my situation is what it is.” He put his hoof down. “But I do not mind, as solitude has become the only company that welcomes me.”

“Well that’s no good!” Pinkie began jumping around him. “It’s no fun being a lonely pants all the time!” Then he made a long gasp. “I know what to do! We should throw you a party! That way, everypony will get to know you!” She began running in place. “Come back here in a few hours.! I’ll have everything by then!”

And with that, Pinkie Pie ran off, quickly out of eye sight. “So…” Skystrike started. “She’s… energetic.”

“You have no idea.” Applejack sighed. “But y’know, I could make some space in the barn if you need a place to stay.”

“Appreciated, but unnecessary. I do not wish to intrude on you… anymore than I already have.” Skystrike sighed. “I am aware that my presence brings… judging eyes from the fellow pony. These ponies may already speak ill of me. I do not wish for the same to happen to you.”

“It’s alright. Let them speak.” Applejack gave a reassuring smile. “You haven’t given me a reason to doubt you. That means you’re good in my book. Now c’mon. I have another friend I think you may like.”

Skystrike nodded, once again following the farm mare through Ponyville. The few ponies that were out made sure to avoid eye contact. He tried not to think less of them. After a few minutes they stopped in front of a pink and lilac building, and from the looks of it, it seemed to be a clothing store… He’d need to thank Applejack for showing him this place later.

Applejack put her hoof up, about to knock on the door, before the door opened on its own and pulled her inside and shut it. “Rarity?” Applejack spoke. “What are-”

“Applejack, what do you think you’re doing, walking around with that brute!?” Rarity put her hooves on the earth pony’s shoulders. “Do you know who that stallion is!?”

“What? Why? Should I?”

“Applejack, Darling, he’s a bounty hunter! That means something bad is happening! I think it’d be best for you to steer clear of him.”

“A bounty hunter?”

“Yes, Applejack, a bounty hunter. He’s probably just here for a paycheck. It doesn't matter who he trots over, he just wants to get the job done and get paid!”

A silence filled the area before Applejack stuttered. “W-well, he just started moving in… I think he might be settling down. And I…kinda said I’d show him around.”

“He’s living HERE!?” Rarity shouted from inside the building. Then she sighed. “Applejack, as your friend, I do not believe it is a good idea to associate with him.”

Applejack began walking toward the door. “Oh come on, Rarity. I’m sure if you just sit down and speak to him, you may like him.” She pushed Rarity off of her, who attempted to stop her from opening the door. But as she did so, she was met with an empty doorway. “...Where did he-” Then her ears went back.

Skystrike, despite being outside, heard the conversation within. And he didn’t stick around long, flying off as soon as this ‘Rarity’ exclaimed her surprise at his residence within the village. Once again, he wasn't surprised. But it didn’t hurt any less. In a few minutes he landed back on his pile of rocks and decided to sit, waiting for nothing in particular.

It would be safe to assume that Applejack would not be returning. The words of her friend slithering into her ears, influencing her mind. Thus, he would need to cut down and move these trees. On the upside, he didn’t lose much time, as he barely spent an hour with Applejack. Grabbed one of his swords and unsheathed it, staring at his reflection. Even through his mask, he could tell he was tired, even if he didn’t want to admit it.

He stood up and flew down to one of the trees. This one was about as thick as him. He stood on his hind legs and breathed in deep. Skystrike pulled back his blade, and with a quick motion, shot his arm forward towards the base of the tree. Had to admit, he outdid himself, as he wasn’t expecting to take down the tree in one cut. Either he didn’t realize how strong he was, or he didn’t realize how angry he was.

He could feel his eyes burning.

He took another deep breath, letting the tree fall to the side, hitting the ground with a loud thump, followed by cracking branches and settling leaves. He continued this for about half of the trees left. Skystrike didn’t want all of them gone, just the ones where he’d start building his house. Though now that he’s calmed down, taking down a tree in one swift swike was no longer possible. His blade got stuck a couple times, but after checking, the blade was still sharp. No harm, no fowl.

Now he had to move them. Skystrike once again got the ropes, tying them around himself and the trees, moving each one next to the pile of boulders. He’d be able to use them later.

But the fatigue of the past few days hit, as the sleepless, stress filled nights caught up to him. He needed to rest. But then he remembered the invitation that was given to him by Pinkie Pie. It was around that time.

Skystrike sheathed his sword and secured it back on his waist. Now that he thought of it, him walking around with them probably wasn't helping his reputation. But that didn’t matter. His reputation wasn’t good to begin with. But more importantly, he would never give another the chance to catch him off guard again.

The pegasus took off the ropes and stood up, ignoring his muscles calling for rest. He began walking, remembering the steps that Applejack once showed him back to Sugarcube ‘Corner’. He was surprised at how… elaborate the party was, just from the outside. A large wooden sign floated in the air, held up by balloons, with ‘Welcome to Ponyville!’ written in pink paint, as well as a smiling picture of Pinkie Pie next to it. Streamers were spread all across the building, Skystrike having to move some out of his way to even open the door.

He was immediately met with a party popper shooting glitter and confetti on his head. “Surprise!” Pinkie Pie threw up her hooves. “Welcome to Ponyville my new pegasus pal!”

Within the building, he saw quite the assortment of confections. Cake pops, cake, cupcakes, gummy candies, a punch fountain, music, and even a couple games spaced around the main floor. It looked inviting, save for him and Pinkie Pie being the only ponies there.

He tried not to let it bring him down. “Hello again, Pinkie Pie.” He gave a courteous bow. “I thank you for… throwing this party for my welcome.”

“Well of course, silly! I do this for everypony! And don’t worry, everypony else will come soon! I invited the whole town! Plus, I… kinda owe this to you.” She poked her forehooves together.

Skystrike stepped inside. “Oh? How so?”

The mare put a cupcake in his hoof. “A few years ago, you stopped by a rock farm in western Equestria. Something about Graveworms or something, but that was my family you helped out! Though if you wouldn’t mind… they never told me the whole story of what happened.”

Skystrike thought back to the mission. “Ah, then you are part of the Pie family… I believe they made the right decision, as… telling you fully would affect the soundness of your mind…Out of respect for them, I shall omit the messier details.” Skystrike cleared his throat. “Before I arrived at your family rock farm… the eldest daughter, Limestone Pie, found a new section of the quarry, seemingly hidden away until a rainstorm flooded a section of rock away. Unbeknownst to her, what she uncovered was a nest of Graveworms.”

“And… What are Graveworms?” Pinkie Pie asked.

“A distant, smaller relative to the Tatzlwurm, roughly the size of several train cars, and with scales of stone in the shape of gravestones. While their relatives travel alone, Graveworms travel in groups… That in tandem with somepony entering their nest, they… quickly become aggressive. Through her quick thinking and luck, Limestone Pie was able to escape. Your family quickly sent a request out for extermination, and I accepted, as nopony wished to take the job. The fight was long… I will spare you the details, but none were harmed, and your family is safe.”

She gave a relieved sigh. “Thank you, Atlas. They mean so much to me… I can call you Atlas, right?”

“You may.”

“Great! And you can call me Pinkie!” Pinkie quickly hugged him. Then the creaking of the door alerted them to a newcomer. Turning, Skystrike saw a cyan mare pegasus with a rainbow mane pushed the door open. Near instantly, Pinkie released her grip and jumped to the pegasus. “Dashie! So glad you came!”

“Of course I’d come! No way I’d miss a Pinkie Pie Party! Though I couldn’t convince Fluttershy to come… What’s the occasion anyway?”

Pinkie Pie let go of her friend. “Oh, it’s a welcome to Ponyville party for…!” The stomped her hooves on the ground and moved to the side, revealing. “Atlas Nebula! Atlas, this is Rainbow Dash! Fastest flier in Ponyville.”

Skystrike recognized that name too. Looking closer, she was definitely the same pony, just… older obviously. He put a hoof on his armored chest and bowed. “A pleasure, miss Rainbow Dash.”

Rainbow Dash froze in place at the sight of him. She wouldn’t admit it, but she was scared, just from looking into the blue neon eyes of his mask. “Uh… h-hi?”

“I… Apologize for frightening you.” Skystrike kept his head low.

“Uh… it’s alright I guess.” Rainbow tried to put on a front. “And just call me Rainbow Dash. I’m not that old.”

“Apologies, I did not mean to imply such.” Skystrike finally raised his head. “I… appreciate that you made the effort to come. My introduction to the ponies in this village have been… less than ideal.”

Rainbow Dash relaxed a little bit. “You know, you aren’t as bad as I heard you were. But why do you talk like that?”

“Rainbow!” Pinkie frowned.

“It is, alright, Pinkie Pie. It is… a fair question to ask.” Skystrike said to the mare before turning to the other. “To answer… I have not spoken to another in quite some time… I am trying to be careful with my words as… I have come off as rude and inconsiderate in the past.”

“Oh… yeah, I get that too.” Rainbow Dash rubbed the back of her head. “But it’s no big deal. Now, let's get to the good stuff before everypony else comes!” Rainbow Dash quickly flew over to a tray of brownies, picking up one and biting into it.

Skystrike, seeing the look of content on the pegasus mare’s face made him look at the cupcake Pinkie gave him earlier. He sniffed it, the sweet smell filling his nose. Skystrike sat down and used his free hoof to unhinge the jaw on his helmet before taking a bite. His ears perked up at the taste before he quickly ate the rest of the cupcake.

He looked up to see Pinkie Pie smiling from ear to ear. “Glad you liked it! Made this all myself!”

Skystrike hummed. “Impressive.” His voice was less muffled as it wasn’t going through metal. “Best cupcake I’ve had, I think.”

“Aww, thanks!” She gave a slight blush. “I actually work here, so I’ve had a lot of practice. It’s a Pinkie Pie secret recipe!”

“Ah, I have the same.” Skystrike nodded. Pinkie’s eyes widened. “While I don’t bake… I have been told that I cook well.”

“Oooh! I know! We should do a cookout! That way, everypony in town can get to know you!”

Rainbow Dash chuckled, stuffing her face with more sweets. “If they come.”

Pinkie winced, her cotton candy-like mane seemingly deflating slightly. “D-... don't worry, Atlas. I’m sure more ponies will come! I bet they’re just running late!” They heard the door creak open once more. Pinkie turned to see who it was, her ears going up at the familiar face. “Applejack! You made it!”

Applejack and Pinkie Pie shared a hug before speaking. “Course I did. It’s a Pinkie party.”

Pinkie craned her neck around the farm mare, looking out to the empty street behind her. “Where’s Rarity? Isn’t she coming?”

Applejack sighed and shook her head. “Said that she was… ‘busy’.” Then she looked past Pinkie to Skystrike, walking up to him with her head hanging low. “I’m mighty sorry about what Rarity said earlier. I’m sure you’d like her once you get to know her.”

Skystrike stayed silent for a moment. A part of him wished to speak his mind, saying that he didn’t want to see her, as her opinion of him was already made, but that would be rude. He cleared his throat before speaking. “If given the chance, if she wishes to speak to me, I will not deny her a meeting.” He once again gave a courteous bow. “I thank you for coming… despite what your friend said about me.”

“It’s no problem. Just trying to make you feel welcome.” Applejack smiled. “By the way, do you still need that axe?”

Skystrike shook his head. “Appreciated, but I have solved the issue. While it may not work as well as a felling axe… a blade is a blade.” Skystrike reached for a cup and filled it at the punch fountain, putting in a straw to drink it through his helmet. But it tasted off. He stopped drinking and looked at it. “...A little spicy…”

Rainbow Dash seemed a bit disappointed. “...That’s it? I spiked it with hot sauce and that’s… it?”

Skystrike looked at her. “...I like hot sauce.”

“In fruit punch?” Applejack tilted her head.

“I have had… worse combinations.” Skystrike said before finishing his drink. “I also do not have the luxury… of wasting food. All I have are preservatives.”

“Really? The farmers market was pretty busy. It’s Monday, after all.” Rainbow said.

Skystrike sighed slightly. “All the stalls were empty on my arrival. Everypony present, as well as the mayor, have been the only ones to… speak words to me, rather than about me. But worry not. I am sure I can forage the Everfree for food.”

Rainbow Dash stopped mid bite of a slice of cake. “...You plan on living in the Everfree Forest!?”

He shook his head. “Next to it. I…” He had a memory, his voice wavered. “I had a friend who brewed. Learning the… patterns of evolutions of plant life from her became useful. Plus, I am aware of several species of fauna native to the Everfree… Most of said fauna are herbivores, thus, means there are… edible plant life.”

Applejack drank from her glass of lemonade. “You know, I stop by Fluttershy’s every once in a while. If you want, I can get some stuff for you.”

“Once again, Appreciated, but unnecessary… I have learned to take care of myself over the years. More importantly, while the effort is appreciated, I believe your interactions with me will have a… negative effect on your social life… I do not wish for my presence to hurt another any more than I already have.” Skystrike said, only to realize his mistake of saying that aloud.

The silence shared between the four was deafening.

Skystrike stood up, turning to each mare as he spoke. “Pinkie Pie, I thank you for hosting this celebration for my arrival. Applejack, I thank you for the hospitality that you have shown me today. Rainbow Dash, while we have barely spoken, I appreciate you coming…” Then he addressed them collectively. “I am sorry for bringing down the mood… It would be best if we put some distance between each other.”

With that, Skystrike turned to leave. Behind him, Pinkie Pie was about to try and convince him to stay, running up to grab onto him, but was pulled back due to a hoof on her shoulder. She looked back to see Applejack with a sad expression on her face. “Pinkie, I think it’s best to leave him be for a while. He… seems to be going through something. He’ll come around eventually.”

It has been a month since he arrived in Ponyville. Very little has changed. Skystrike was still shunned by most around him, the only exceptions being Applejack and Pinkie Pie who came by for small talk. He humored them, for lack of a better word. But finally owning the land, he quickly got to work. The same day he finished signing all the paperwork, he worked with Mayor Mare to find ponies to get the materials to build his house.

After a few weeks of hard work, and literally nothing else to do, his house was done. It was his design, built for a pony his size. Walls several inches thick filled with a layer of bricks, with proper insulation and ventilation. He learned how important those were, as ponies and changelings seem to just weather the elements. The exterior was made of stone, the same ones he dug up earlier that month, and in place of a thatch roof like the town homes, he had tiled roofing.

Putting in the last tile, he gave a tired sigh and flew down from his roof. Pushing the door open, he turned on the light and rolled his neck. It was big enough for him to run around in if he wanted to. In front of him was his currently empty living room and kitchen. A doorway to his right lead to the bathroom, while a doorway further down leads to his bedroom.

Finally having a place to put his stuff, he began unpacking. All his food that he’s gathered were put into his cupboards, as well as his pots and pans. Next, he went into his bedroom and left the rest of his items, which were nothing but trinkets and various metals.

No… those trinkets weren’t ‘nothing’. Each held a fond memory of better times. But it pained him to look at them right now.

“Are you finished?” Echo asked him.

Skystrike didn’t realize how long he was staring at them for. “Yes.” Skystrike stood up. “So, what’s new?”

“We did not come to this place just to prepare for Nightmare Moon. Are you ready?”

Skystrike nodded, putting on his armor, securing his blades, and leaving his house. It was as Echo said, Nightmare Moon wasn’t the only reason he was in Ponyville. Well, originally, it was, but upon moving here, Echo alerted him to something. A signal. A problem.

Equestria didn’t even have radios yet. There was no possible way that the ponies could make a signal that Echo could detect. That meant that there was only one way he’d be getting a signal. Humanity was on this planet. It did not surprise him, as it’d only make sense that they had bases on this side of the portal, but it did worry him, as there is a chance that it is still active.

And the signal was coming from the Everfree Forest.

Skystrike ventured deeper. Soon, no light broke through the roof of leaves. He could barely see, only being able to maneuver through the forest due to the nightvision of his helmet. “The signal is weak, but I have been able to triangulate the source.” Echo spoke once more.

Skystrike nodded. “And the signal is from where?”

“Northeast, 200 meters. Depth, 800 meters.”

“...Echo, how the fuck am I supposed to get down there?”

“I would recommend a shovel.” Skystrike stayed quiet. “That was a joke.”

“Haha.” He fake laughed. “Where can I find the entrance to the source of the signal?”

“Scanning… Several caves lead to the exterior of the source, though I cannot verify the integrity of the caves, nor the fauna within. Caution is recommended. Proceed west for 300 meters.”

Skystrike nodded, following the directions of his machine ally. As he walked along the damp ground below him, he could feel his hooves getting ever so slightly heavier as mud held on to his armor. He always hated forests… Well, not always. Just bad memories.

The main reason he hated forests was how quiet they could be. He learned the hard way how bad that was. For now, there were at least other sounds besides him. The sounds of… whatever was out there, seemed to keep a safe distance from him. Except for one that seemed to be approaching. The trees bent as a large paw half his size pushed each to the side.

He wasn't expecting to see a lion in the Everfree forest. But then he squinted at the orange beast with a red mane. Looking closer, it had a pair of dragon-like wings and a large scorpion tail. It bared its fangs at the pegasus, who decided to stand on his hind legs and draw his blades. They stared down each other for some time, Skystrike not backing down from the roaring beast.

The manticore lunged at him, trying to pounce on the pegasus. Skystrike dove forward, under the beast, spinning and slashing at its chest. Then he remembered the tail, just barely being able to flap his wings to dodge the venomous stinger. Lucky for him, it was caught in the ground. Skystrike took his chance at victory, grabbing the manticore by the tail and pulling. With some effort, he swung the manticore over his head, slamming it into a nearby tree. Before it could recover, Skystrike stabbed into the side of it, in an attempt to puncture a lung. But it was too shallow.

While Skystrike took a jump back to ensure his safety, the manticore didn’t want to fight anymore, scrambling to its paws and limping away as fast as it could. And he let it go… no use for more spilt blood. He sheathed his swords and got back to walking. Soon enough, a rocky protrusion entered his field of vision… as well as a trail of blood… fresh blood.

As he entered the cave, he came upon a sight he wasn’t expecting to see. The manticore he fought earlier, battered and bruised. It wasn’t hunting him earlier… it was defending something. The beast still bared his fangs, roaring at him once more. Skystrike looked past the creature he fought, seeing four more, one the same size, and three smaller ones… cubs.

Skystrike looked at the family before him, then to the manticore protecting the cave, then to a side path. That had to be the entrance he was looking for. He stood on his hind legs once more, but instead of drawing his blades, he put up his forehooves, showing that he wasn’t there to fight, and hoping that the manticore understood.

The manticore was still wary of him, stopped roaring, but still showed its razor sharp fangs as Skystrike shuffled to the side, towards his destination. His back stayed to the wall of the cave until he rounded a corner, the creature out of eye sight. He sighed as he got back down on all fours, walking until he couldn’t no more.

Before him was a large chasm, going on as far as he could see. Flowing water was heard, looking down and seeing the underground river speeding to his right. Skystrike rolled his neck before picking up a rock and dropping it down into the water. From the time he let it go to the time the echo of the rock hitting the water reached his ears, he estimated it was three hundred meters deep.

With a flap of his wings, Skystrike carefully maneuvered between the stone walls of the chasm before landing at the bottom next to the river. “Echo, how close am I?”

“Continue upstream for now. We must see the closest point we can.” And so he did, the sounds of armored hooves echoing with each step he took. He made sure to be careful of the more slippery rocks. Didn’t want to risk falling into a river he couldn’t see the bottom of. But every once in a while, he could’ve sworn he saw something swimming within it though.

Of course, he was right on the money. The forest wasn’t done with him yet, making itself known as splashing water allerted Skystrike to something exiting it. It was a snake-like creature, with pale scales, and rows upon rows of razor sharp teeth. The black eyes of the river monster focused on him as it tried to bite down. He stumbled into its hunting grounds.

Skystrike jumped to his side, making the creature get a mouthful of stone. A large chunk of rock filled its mouth as it slithered back into the water. A few minutes passed as Skystrike waited with his sword drawn, before the creature jumped out again. This time, Skystrike was ready, raising his sword and slashing down the entirety of the body of it. Blood splattered on him and stained the river red as the two halves twitched and jerked on either side of him. Skystrike sighed as he splashed the water on himself, getting the majority of the blood off of him.

Leaving the body for the residents of the chasm, he continued walking once more, making sure to keep a close eye on and a safe distance from the water. “Stop. You have arrived.” Echo said, making Skystrike stop walking. “This is the closest point to the signal. While it may be unlikely, there is the possibility of an access point nearby.”

Skystrike hummed. “Maybe… Better idea, tell me what direction to go, and I’ll just dig there.”

“I believe that would be a poor decision. That would make our presence known.”

“And this so called access point wouldn't? Plus, I know you know this as well. They have no reason to send a signal here unless they wanted someone to find it. More than likely, it’s a distress signal. If it is, then they’re cut off from the home dimension, since they would’ve gotten help from there...” Skystrike rolled his neck as he continued. “In that scenario, they’re cornered. There is another scenario where this signal was meant for us to find on purpose, and they’re already expecting us. That leaves three options: the humans within are expecting me, they’re low on resources, or they’re gone and the signal is being broadcasted for no one to find. If I were a betting pony, I’d play ballsy right now.”

“Very well.” Echo said, still as monotone as ever. Skystrike could have sworn if he had a different voice, he’d be able to hear how annoyed Echo was. “Turn north east, 32 degrees. The source of the signal is directly ahead of you.”

Skystrike hummed and nodded. He stood on his hind legs and pulled his forehooves back, charging his magic into them. With one fluid motion, he pushed his hooves forward, making a circular indent in the cavern wall. Pulling his hooves back once more, a large cylinder of rock slid out of the indent, only leady to another wall of stone. So he continued, over and over, countless times until he found something new. A cracked wall of rusting steel faced him.

But he couldn’t confirm anything yet until he was inside. With a magic infused punch, the metal bent forward, giving him an entrance. Sure enough, it was abandoned, shown by nature's grasp on the facility. Roots snaked around each wall and crevasse, seeming to try and pull the place into the forest. A small layer of moss was growing on the furthest wall from him, beginning to spread to the floor.

He snapped out of his thoughts from Echo’s words. “There, on the right. There is a terminal that I may be able to access… if time has not taken it’s hold.” Skystrike nodded, walking up to it and taking Echo off his head, shaking out his hair before placing him on the machine. In a few moments, the lights of the facility flickered on, buzzing as they just barely lit up the room to acceptable levels. “Allow me some time to figure out what happened here.”

“Alright.” Skystrike said as he continued to look around. He went to the wall of moss. With the lights now on, he realized that the wall the moss was from actually caved in, rocks and dirt falling out from the large hole. Curiously, he brushed off some of the moss, his eyes widening slightly as the feeling of whatever was below the moss was not of stone. He brushed off more, realizing later than he should have that it was a skull. A human skull. It fell apart at the slightest amount of force.

“Analysis complete.” Echo gained his attention. “This was once an experimental weapons facility, abandoned 67 years ago. The staff within were not meeting the demands of the commanding officers, and were left as well. In an attempt at survival, the workers sent out a distress signal… none came.” Skysrtike looked at the skull in his hooves, pity showing on his face. “There were a total of six scientists here. Two left in an attempt to find food. They did not come back. From the fauna you’ve encountered on the way here, we can assume what happened to them. Depending on who you ask, those two may have had the better end.”

“...What do you mean by that?” Skystrike asked hesitantly.

“Though corrupted, there are logs that detail what occurred to the remaining four. Food stores became scarce. The lead scientist took the safest route and killed one of the others, convincing the rest that they needed to eat. Soon, they fought between each other, trying to be the last to survive. Would you like to see the files?”

They never gave up hope. They would do anything to live. Skystrike couldn’t fully blame them. While not condoning cannibalism, nor ever thinking of going that far, there were times where all he could focus on was living to the next day. He looked at the skeletal remains he found, as well as a pile of moss covered bones nearby. He can't say he hates humans, nor can he say he liked them, but they did not deserve this… “No.” He sighed as he casted fire in his hooves and torched the remains to ash. “Download whatever you need. I’ll cave this place in once you’re done.”

“Alternative: we keep this place for our own use.” Skystrike raised an eyebrow. “I believe that this facility may come in handy in the near future as you prepare for Nightmare Moon. Also, I must point out that it is by pure luck that your arm has not been damaged. A way to repair and improve it would prove valuable.”

Skystrike nodded. “Alright… then I guess I have something else to work on.”

Skystrike woke up and put on his helmet. “...Today’s the day, huh?” He let out a long sigh. It was his last day on Eques. That was the promise he made to himself. He didn’t blame her. Celestia. For trying to stop him all those years ago. After everything he did for the friends he once had, he understands at least partially the duty she needs to do for her country.

He did blame her for… other things. But that was a memory for another time…. No, there wouldn’t be another time. In a sense, that’s a good thing. He wouldn’t want to spend his last day moping about the sad stuff. If it was going to be his last day, he wanted to have some good memories.

Well… try to.

But first was his morning routine. He stepped outside, feeling the crisp morning air. Shaking out his mane, he walked over to the rocks he dug out weeks before, picking up one the size of him and holding it above his head before doing a set of squats, then push ups, then sit ups. Finally, he went for a quick jog, just on the edge of the Everfree Forest. After an hour, he was back home, preparing a bath for himself. The tub he ordered was expensive as Tartatus, since he needed one that would fit his size. He took off his metal arm and helmet and stepped into the tub.

The warm water seemed to soothe his body all over. He put up his left arm, looking at the many scars riddled around it, only shown by the gaps in his wet fur. He had so many… most not worth counting, nor remembering. Others… he didn’t want to remember. Skystrike let himself soak a bit more before actually beginning to clean himself.

It was now seven in the morning. The bath was nice, but food will be even better. There wasn’t much he could make with the food he found within the Everfree, but he could make it work. There was enough to make pancakes and hashbrowns. The meal of kings. Boy breakfast.

While it wasn’t as appetizing as he wished it was, it was filling. After washing his hands, he put on his armor. Each step he took was declared by a heavy thump as he grabbed his two swords and a whetstone. The pegasus began juggling the whetstone in his hoof as he walked outside. Once again, he went back to the rocks and sat on the highest one.

Skystrike drew one of his swords. Lining up the whetstone with the right angle, he pushed the stone on the edge of his blade, sharpening it. Soon enough, he got into a rhythm, and was able to focus on some other things simultaneously. He came to appreciate the view from his house. The river flowing into a pond, shadowed by a large maple tree. The flowing grass in the wind. An orange pony approaching him.

That’s new… he hasn’t seen her in quite some time. Well, that wasn’t entirely true. Skystrike saw Applejack pass by every once in a while to visit her friend Fluttershy. In fact, there were only five ponies who ever walked this path, the ones that he met previously, and one white coated unicorn who he never got the name of. While Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, and Fluttershy at least shared a passing glance, this unicorn would put in a conscious effort to avoid his eyes… Doesn’t matter.

But this time was different. Applejack seemed to be approaching him, and it seemed to be more than the uncommon small talk shared between the two. Skystrike jumped down from his rock and sheathed his sword. Applejack quickened her pace when she saw that. “Howdy, Nebula!” She greeted him with a smile.

Skystrike put a hoof to his chest and bowed. “Good Morning, Applejack… I imagine you are doing well?”

Applejack nodded. “Yeah, I’m doing fine. How about you? I’ve never seen you around town. And you don’t need to be so formal. We’re friends, aren’t we?”

Skystrike inwardly winced at that word. “...Very well.” He put down his hoof. “I am doing… alright. Nothing you should worry yourself over. I… imagine your family is doing well?”

Applejack outwardly winced. “Well… mostly. I told you about my little sister, Applebloom… She got into a fight at the Schoolhouse, so she’s a bit mad at me punishing her.”

He chuckled. “Comes with the territory… I can relate.”

Her ears perked up in surprise. “Y’know, I think that’s the first time I heard you laugh. You have family?”

Skystrike nodded. “Four sisters, one brother, none by blood, as we are orphans. As the eldest… I had a responsibility to be a good role model.” He sighed. “When our Headmare was absent, I filled the role. While I… don’t know the specifics of your situation, I… urge you to hold onto the bonds of your family. You may never know what circumstances will cause a… ‘gap' between you and them.”

Applejack thought on his words for a while. Then she gave a small smile. “...Sounds like it came from the heart. Thank you, Nebula, I’ll keep that in mind.” Then she scratched the back of her head. “I… have another reason for stopping by…” She inhaled, then let it out. “You know the Summer Sun Celebration is today. My family is actually in charge of the banquette, and the whole family’s coming. I know Ponyvile didn’t treat you too kindly, so… I was hoping I could give you some hospitality… O-only if you want to, of course. You just seem… lonely?”

Skystrike looked at her, then thought about it. Out of everypony, she did try the most for him… He should at least return the favor. “...I would be honored if you’d have me.”

“You know… When you said your family was in charge… I wasn’t expecting one this large.” Skystrike looked out from the entrance of Sweet Apple Acres. A large red farmhouse sat in the middle of view, surrounded by a pig pen, a sheep pen, and a chicken coop. He’d ask about the carrot field and barn in the distance later. His attention was more drawn to the amount of ponies walking around. At least two dozen.

“Yeah! The extended family came by to help out!” Applejack waved him over. “C’mon, I’ll introduce you!” Applejack was about to respond, but ended up running head first into a rather large stallion. The red earth pony wasn’t as large as him, though it was still an impressive physique. “Oh, perfect timing. Nebula, this is Big Mac, my older brother. Big Mac, this is Atlas Nebula. He’s the stallion I told you about.”

Big Mac looked from his sister and up to Skystrike. His green eyes seemed to stare into Skystrike’s soul, trying to judge his character. It was a common look Skystrike got, and thus, he paid it no mind. Skystrike put a hoof to his chest and bowed. “It is a pleasure.”

Big Mac nodded and put out a hoof to shake. “Eeyup.” Skystrike took it and shook, noticing a rather strong grip on his own hoof. The problem was that he didn’t know he took Skystrike’s metal hoof. Big Mac's eyes widened ever so slightly when no outward reaction was shown.

Skystrike pulled back his hoof. “A stallion of few words… I understand. I do hope that we get along.”

“Eeyup.”

“Come on, Nebula, I said I’d show you around! Anything you wanna see?” Applejack asked him.

“To be honest… I’ve never been on a farm… It’d be stupid of me to ask what you grow. But now that we’re on the subject, I do wish to see how you harvest the apples… If you do not mind.”

“Of course not! Come on, I still have some apples to buck.”

‘Buck?’ Skystrike thought to himself as he followed the mare. After a few minutes, the two were in front of several dozen trees full of several types of apples. Baskets sat at the bottom of the trees in preparation.

“Ain’t too much to show about applebucking to be honest.” Applejack turned her back to the tree. “Just plant your hooves… pick up your hind legs… and…” With a swift, powerful, and rather impressive kick, several dozen apples fell from the tree she kicked into the baskets below. “Ain't much, but it’s honest work! Wanna give it a try?”

“A… tempting offer… One that I shall take you up on.” Skystrike stood up and walked to an adjacent tree. Just like he saw… plant the hooves, pick up the hind legs, and with a kick. The tree was rather strong, the impact going into his legs and making him feel it for a few moments. Only a few apples fell into the baskets below.

“Not bad for your first try. You might have a knack for this.”

“Maybe…” Skystrike looked back at the tree, trying to compare his kick to Applejack. Maybe a bit lower… and more power. With another kick, the rest of the apples fell in. “...You make it look much easier than it is.”

She stared, wide eyed. “I’m… surprised you got it down on your second try. It took Applebloom a while.”

“Applebloom?”

“My little sister.”

“Ah.” He nodded. “And it just shows I have a good teacher.” A slightly flustered Applejack hid behind her hat as he picked up the baskets. Standing on his hind legs, two were in each of his forehooves, and the other two were balanced on his wings. “Where are we taking these?”

She straightened her hat. “Just to the barn. We still have a lot of baking to do.” Applejack began leading him. Once there, the mare began introducing him to the rest. “Nebula, this is Apple Fritter, Apple Bumpkin, Red Gala, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Caramel Apple, Apple Strudel, Apple Tatr, Baked Apples, Apple Brioche, Apple Cinnamon Crisp, Applebloom, and Granny Smith!”

He first put down the baskets, then put a hoof to his chest and bowed. “A pleasure.”

“HOWDY!” They said in unison.

Skystrike winced at the concentrated southern energy inside the barn. Looking around, it seems like they turned the inside of the barn to a temporary baking area. Several tables were surrounded with the ponies named, and the back wall was lined with ovens. He leaned over to Applejack to whisper. “I’m going to be honest… I am not going to remember their names.”

Applejack chuckled. “It’s alright… Hey, wanna help out? You can help me and Applebloom peel the apples you just bought in.”

Skystrike nodded, picking up the baskets and moving them to the yellow filly with a rather large bow. He put them down and washed his hooves in a nearby sink. When he looked back, Applejack and her little sister were already getting to work. He sat down and picked up one of the peeling knives in one hoof and an apple in another. The motions came quickly to him, holding the knife steady as he quickly spun the apple around, making the skin come off in one piece.

“Didn’t think you’d be so good at this, Nebula.” Applejack started to make some small talk.

Skystrike nodded. “Comes with the territory with my line of work. Out of all of those I traveled with, the cooking mostly fell to me.” He put the peeled apple in its own basket before reaching for another.

“Oh? What type of ponies did you travel with?”

He chuckled slightly. “Actually, out of the ten of us, only three of us were ponies. They’re all good beings though… Don't know you too well, but from what I know so far, you may like Jeshan. Always was on about having a good work ethic.”

“What’s Jeshan? Doesn’t sound like a pony name to me.” Applejack tilted her head.

“He’s a Diamond Dog, homeland is on the other side of the Celestial Sea. But he’s probably back there by now. Said he wanted to set up his own store…” He sighed at the memory. “But enough about me and my history. Tell me about yourselves.”

“Well, not too much to say, really.” Applejack rolled her forehoof as she kept peeling. “Raised in this orchard most of my life…” She thought about something she could say about herself. “I… I can do lasso tricks?”

“Interesting…” Skystrike nodded. “You know… this may come off as stereotypical, but can you play guitar?”

Applejack smirked. “What, you think that because I’m a farm girl, I know how to play guitar?” She could feel the raised eyebrow under his helmet. “...Ok, I do know how to play guitar, but not because I’m a farm girl!”

Skystrike chuckled as Applebloom finally spoke up. “Hey, Mr.Nebula, do you always wear your armor?”

Skystrike nodded. “More often than not, I do…” He saw in her eyes the filly was about to ask why. “Admittedly… I haven’t had the chance to get clothes since arriving here.”

“I know my big sister has a friend she goes to. Rarity’s really good at making clothes!”

Applejack winced as the two recognized that name. “Well… I’ll take your word for it and see if she’s… available.” Skystrike said, trying to move on the conversation.

“What about the helmet?”

“Applebloom!” Applejack said, trying to signal not to ask.

“What? I hear you talk about what could be under there with Big Mac!” The filly pointed a hoof.

Applejack sheepishly looked at Skystrike. He felt somewhat obligated to answer. “I also wear the helmet all the time... Mostly because I think it makes me look cool. As for what’s under it… let’s keep it hidden for now. I have my reasons.” He said as he continued to peel the apples. Thankfully, there wasn’t much awkward silence as they were on the last few. But Skystrike still had some thoughts. It was… strange how welcoming these ponies were… not that he minded. He wouldn't be surprised if Applejack said something to her family. But she didn’t need to know that he knew. “Applejack.” Skystrike got her attention. “I… Thank you for today. It has been a memorable experience.”

She tipped her hat as Skystrike got up. “Well shucks, Nebula, it was no problem. I’m just glad to have you by.”

He nodded. “I am glad you invited me… But I must go for now. I have some things to prepare for the celebration.” He gave a quick bow. “It was a pleasure meeting the rest of your family.”

“You’re welcome by anytime!” Applejack waved him goodbye.

Skystrike walked out of the barn and began stretching his wings, taking to the sky above. To be honest, he didn’t have much to do really, just some… letters he had to send. After a few minutes, he landed in front of his house and opened the door. He went to his room and sat down at his desk, taking out his diary and an ink quill. He began to write.

It was about the day he’s had so far. A way for someone, somewhere to remember him, and what he did in his life. A way for him to remember what he did in his life. He couldn’t fully say he regretted meeting all of those around him. But at the same time, he didn’t want to forget any of the memories either. Skystrike started doing this back at the hive. Khrusalis gave him this diary as a way to share his thoughts when speaking them didn’t seem to be enough.

He locked it and set it on his bed. After all, he wouldn’t be sleeping tonight. But then he had a thought. Eventually, someone will find what’s left of him, and thus his identity will be revealed… If that was the case, it’d be best to leave some letters for those he once held close.

So he began to write. Pages upon pages seemed to flow out of the quill onto the pages. Every memory, every emotion seemed to be put into words as the feather met the parchment. Each written to every individual he deemed important enough to write to. His siblings, his friends… his family.

As soon as the last letter was finished, he let out a sigh as he put down the quill. Only then did he feel something run down his face. Getting up and looking in the mirror, he took off his mask. Large dark spots were under his eyes, showing his lack of a good sleep over the past few days.

He was also crying… First time he’s done that in years.

He sighed and went to the bathroom to wash his face. Drying his face, he went back to his room and began folding the letters and putting stamps on them. Hopefully whoever finds them sends them. He also left the letters on his bed.

His attention was drawn to a knocking at his door. He didn’t realize how long he was staring at his diary and letters. Skystrike put on his helmet and walked to his front door, wondering who it could be. Especially during this time of day… He looked at the time, only now realizing how much time has passed. It’s been about three hours since he got back from Applejack’s, it being five in the afternoon.

Skystrike opened the door, seeing a bright pink pony looking up at him. “Hiya Nebby!”

“Hello, Pinkie Pie…” Then he remembered. “I apologize. You told me to call you Pinkie.”

“Thanks for remembering! Now come on!” She began pulling on his hoof.

Skystrike inhaled deeply. “And where are we going?”

“Oh! Somepony new just came to Ponyville! Moved in, just like you! We’re throwing her a surprise party!” She continued to speak as Skystrike closed the door behind him. “You might like her. She’s from Canterlot like you!”

“Oh really?” He raised a brow. “Tell me about her.”

“Oh…” Pinkie giggled sheepishly. “I… kinda ran off to plan the party before I could ask anything… I actually learned from Applejack that she's from Canterlot.” She rubbed her chin in thought. “She’s a unicorn…”

“Aaaaand?”

“She’s… purple?”

Skystrike raised a brow. “Anything else?”

“She… has a pet baby dragon?”

‘Fuck’ Skystrike thought to himself. He knew of her. Twilight Sparkle. Though it was a loose kept secret, most weren't aware of Celestia’s only student. On a more personal level, he went to school with her for a short time. The term ‘friends’ wouldn’t describe the relationship they once had, but neither would ‘acquaintance’. But she always focused on her studies more than anything. No way she would be here for no reason. As for Spike, he could barely talk the last time he saw the baby.

However… in the off chance that she is here for Nightmare Moon like him, then it’d be a welcome ally.

“Very well. I… assume the party is at Sugarcube Corner?” Skystrike asked.

Pinkie shook her head. “Nope! This time, it’s at the Treebrary!” Skystrike looked at her. “The tree library, silly!”

“You know I don’t really walk around town.” He sighed. “Who all will be there?”

“Hopefully the whole town this time! It’s also a celebration for the summer solstice. We stay up all night to make sure we see the first rays of the sun!”

He nodded. “It’s been quite a while since… I’ve been to one. Though I must tell you that I have some… personal obligations to attend to at the days end. You will have to forgive me for leaving early.”

“It’s alright! I’m just glad you’re coming!” Pinkie quickly hugged him, oblivious to the wincing stallion. Why did he feel guilty? “Now come on! She won’t be here for a few more minutes! We gotta surprise her!”

Skystrike tried to ignore the feeling welling up in his chest, stepping inside the dark room. Dozens of eyes fell on him as Pinkie Pie pushed him into the crowd, then squeezing in between him and another pony. Skystrike’s ears perked up. “Two sets of hoof steps outside.”

Pinkie Pie ran to the window. “She’s here! Everypony, get ready!”

“-must get into bed…” A yellow pegasus flew inside with a purple and green baby dragon in her hooves.

Only to be taken out of her hooves and the mare pushed outside by the purple unicorn. “Yes, yes, we’ll get right on that! Well goodnight!” She slammed the door.

“Huh, rude much?” The baby dragon spoke.

“Sorry, Spike. But I have to convince the princess that Nightmare Moon is coming and we’re running out of time!” She sighed. “I just need to be alone so I can study without a bunch of crazy ponies trying to make friends all the time! Now where’s the light?”

The light flashed on, the crowd around yelling “Surprise!!” to a shocked Twilight Sparkle and Spike.

Skystrike starred, still processing the words she said, and the beings he saw. Sure enough, it was them… More importantly, she knows about Nightmare Moon. Hopefully they get the chance to speak later… And it seemed like it’d be a long later, as Twilight grew increasingly more annoyed at the party mare fighting for space with her shadow. Eventually, she left for what he assumed to be her room.

‘Fuck’ He thought to himself. Looks like he wasn’t going to get that chance.

His thought was interrupted by something poking his wing. Skystrike looked to his side, seeing no one, then looked down, seeing Spike, the baby dragon. “Uh, you wouldn’t be Atlas Nebula… would you?”

He looked at the kid, ignoring the stares around him. “...I am. How can I help you?”

“Oh, well, I’m Spike!” The baby dragon put out a claw. Skystrike shook it. “I hear a lot about you in the newspapers in Canterlot! I’ve always wanted to meet you.”

Skystrike put a hoof to his chest and bowed. “The pleasure is mine, Spike. Heard you just moved in… How are you enjoying this village so far?”

“It’s great!” Spike pumped a fist. “I went to Sweet Apple Acres and ate a lot of food. It was great!” Then he stared at him for a moment. “You know… you’re a lot bigger than they make it seem in the papers.”

“Ah… thanks?”

“You’re welcome!” Spike said before running to the snack table.

Cute kid. Skystrike stretched, not dissimilar to a cat, then went for the punch. He poured himself a drink before he was tapped on his wing once more. He turned to see Applejack with a white unicorn and a curly blue mane, who seemed to focus on her beauty. “Hey, Nebula! Glad to see ya made it.”

Skystrike nodded. “Pinkie was adamant on me coming… It is nice to see you as well, Applejack.” Then he turned to the white unicorn. “I do not believe we’ve had the pleasure of meeting, miss…?”

“This is my friend Rarity. She’s the owner of the Carousel Boutique I tried to show you a while ago.” Applejack introduced the mare.

Rarity cleared her throat. “Ahem… As Applejack said, I am Rarity.” She smiled sheepishly. “I… apologize for the words I said back then that you overheard-”

Skystrike put up a hoof to stop her, then moved his hoof to his chest. With a bow, he spoke. “A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Rarity…” He chose his next words carefully. “There is… no kind way to say this, so I will speak my mind. I do not wish for your apology, as I feel you are only apologizing due to the fact I overheard what you’ve said about me, rather than because you regret the words you’ve spoken about me.” She winced at his words, as did the rest of the ponies within earshot. “However…” He continued. “I will not hold onto such petty grudges. This is a night of celebration. If you are able to treat me like any other, I’d be most grateful.”

Rarity brushed her mane to the side of her head. “I… think I can do that.”

Applejack awkwardly cleared her throat. “There’s also somepony else who I’d like you to meet.” Applejack pushed the yellow pegasus from earlier forward.

Skystrike bowed. “A pleasure to meet you, face to face, Fluttershy. I apologize for frightening you the last time we met.”

“Um… h-hi…” Fluttershy whispered.

“You do not have to force yourself to speak. Your greeting is enough.” He poured himself another drink. “...Why is it spicy?”

“Oh.” Rainbow Dash flew next to him. “Look, you poured yourself hot sauce. Twilight did the same.” She chuckled.

Skystrike picked up the bottle, then looked at the other bottle of fruit punch. They both had the same color. “This seems like… a massive oversight.”

“Have you tried it on a cupcake!? It’s great!” Pinkie beamed.

Skystrike looked at her. “...Fuck it.” He poured some on his cupcake and bit into it. It was… an acquired taste. “You are an enigma, Pinkie.”

“Thanks!” She said before jumping off.”

He looked at her. Rainbow Dash laughed. “You get used to it.”

The party continued like normal. Well, as normal as it could while he was there. Though most avoided his presence, a few actually sat down and had a conversation with him. Eventually, he did want some time to himself. He was never a big fan of crowds. Grabbing a random book off one of the shelves, Skystrike walked out the front door and sat down next to the door, beginning to read. A few pages in, he realized it was on various animals, from various parts of the world. While the book said the information within was skeptical at best, Skystrike wouldn’t be surprised if things like Centaurs and Gargoyles existed.

He was taken out of the book by a hoof on his shoulder. He turned to look at the orange mare. “Ah, Applejack. How goes the party?”

“Starting to die down, actually. We’re about to move to the town hall. There’s only an hour before the sun is raised.”

“I’ve been out here for that long?” He looked up to the moon, the mare in it seeming to stare back. He could’ve sworn that some stars around it seemed to be moving closer… in fact, if he remembered right, that was the first time he ever saw the stars move. He had a bad feeling. “...Let me put this book back. I’ll meet you there.”

Applejack nodded as he got up, and she went to the Town Hall. Once inside the library again, he found himself to be the only one inside. He put the book back in place then checked his two blades. Still sharp, if he was unfortunate enough to need them tonight.

Skystrike made his way to the Town Hall, seeing nearly every pony in Ponyville inside. He looked around, seeing Applejack with her immediate family, Pinkie Pie jumping alongside Twilight Sparkle, and Fluttershy conducting the birds though a song routine. Seems like he made it just in time. He flew up to an empty spot on the upper balcony and sat down.

A spotlight fell upon Mayor Mare center stage… There’s no way that’s her name. “Fillies and Gentlecolts! As mayor of Ponyville, it is my great pleasure to announce the beginning of the summer sun celebration!” The crowd around and below him cheered. “In just a few moments, our town will witness the magic of the sunrise, the longest day of the year!” Skystrike looked to the moon. “And now, it is my great honor to introduce to you the ruler of our land. The very pony who gives us the sun and the moon each and every day… the good, the wise, the bringer of harmony to all of Equestria, Princess Celestia!” His ears perked up at that name. She’s here. But those thoughts were cast aside as the moon seemed to flash. His attention was stolen again by the murmuring of the crowd. Rarity seemed to have pulled a rope to reveal Celestia, who was absent.

The pegasus ignored the chattering between the ponies as he looked back to the moon. The mare within was gone. Something seemed to be flying down from it, a cloud of blue and purple mist. It coagulated at the balcony that the princess of the sun was supposed to arrive at. In its place, a pitch black alicorn with light azure armor. Her mane flowed like a nebula as her cyan cat-like eyes stared into the crowd. “Oh, my beloved subjects!” She cooed. “It’s been so long since I’ve seen your precious little sun loving faces.”

“What did you do with our princess!?” Rainbow Dash tried to fly toward the alicorn, only stopping due to Applejack pulling her back by her tail.

The mare began to giggle, breaking out into a maniacal laughter. “Why? Am I not royal enough for you? Don’t you know who I am?”

Skystrike put one of his hooves on the hilt of his sword as Pinkie Pie spoke. “Ooh! Ooh! More guessing games! Umm… pokey smokes! How about… queen meanie! No, black snootie, black snoo-” She was interrupted with a cupcake in her face, courtesy of Applejack.

“Does my crown no longer count, now that I have been imprisoned for a thousand years?” She loomed over a cowering Fluttershy. “Did you not recall the legend?” She turned to Rarity. “Did you not see signs!?”

“I did!” Nightmare Moon looked at the speaker. Twilight Sparkle stood tall. “I know who you are! You’re the mare in the moon! Nightmare Moon!”

“Well well well…” Nightmare Moon grinned. “Somepony who remembers me… then you know why I am here.”

The unicorn stuttered, shrinking in fear. “You’re here to… to-”

Her worry grew as Nightmare Moon laughed once more. “Remember this day, little ponies, for it will be your last!” Her mane seemed to expand, encompassing the whole roof in a spiral motion. “From this moment forth… the night… will last… FOREVER!”

Well, now that she was finally done monologuing, Skystrike decided to do something… after the Mayor sent the three pegasus guards after the alicorn, who were swatted out of the air with magic lightning. He quickly flew up to her, landing on the railing of the platform she was standing on. The bystanders went silent as the two stared at each other. Skystrike finally decided to speak. “You know… after all the preparation I did, you aren’t what I was expecting… Makes sense that you’re nothing but a bedtime story now.”

Nightmare Moon scowled at him. “And who are you supposed to be, whelp?”

Skystrike kept looking through his helmet. “Somepony who’s giving you a choice to rethink your actions.” He crossed his forehooves.

She kept looking at him, into his eyes. A wide grin stretched from ear to ear. “I know that look. Abandonment… betrayal… you don’t have anything else to live for, do you?” His silence was enough of an answer. “I can already tell that you’re a cut above those guards down there… And I will need somepony powerful enough to keep my coming empire under control… What do you say I give your life a new meaning?”

There was an audible gulp among the crowd, ponies cursing to themselves for the way they treated the iron clad pegasus. But then he laughed… and their anxiety grew ten-fold. “Heheheh… AHAHAHAHAHA!” He reeled back before regaining his composure. “Sorry… it’s just… you would not believe how many times I’ve heard that… Nightmare Moon… I will not pretend to know the extent of your story, nor will I ask for the justifications of your actions.” He looked her dead in the eyes. “Sure, these ponies may have not accepted me, but that is where our similarities end… I can still see the happiness these ponies have with one another, and I understand that ponies like me may never get that. I swore to protect the smiles you commit yourself to take away. You have suffered, thus you want others to. I have suffered, and I wouldn’t wish that on anypony else. So I will give you the chance to change for the better.”

She seemed amused. “Or…?”

“You will be my enemy.”

She looked at him, before breaking out in laughter. “AAAHAHAHA! Then I suppose we are enemies!”

He sighed. “I suppose we are…” Skystrike said as the two starred between each other. Before she could react Skystrike reeled back a hoof and punched her square in the jaw. Nightmare Moon’s eyes went wide at the strength behind it, sending her through the wall behind her and falling down a few stories. Looking at where she fell from, she was surprised at the speed of a pony in heavy armor, the pegasus being right in front her, his two swords drawn and going for a stabbing motion at her ribcage.

Nightmare Moon got back on her hooves and jumped to dodge his attack, simultaneously blasting him with a ball of arcane energy. He picked up his right arm and cut down the magic, exploding in a ball of blue smoke. He quickly flew up to the sky, out of the blinding smoke, only to see a sparkling blue mist flying away to the horizon.

As he sheathed his swords, a cyan pegasus began to fly after it, only to realize her speed was outmatched by Nightmare Moon. Then, Rainbow Dash looked around. He followed her eyes to Twilight Sparkle with Spike on her back, heading to the Treebrary. If he was to learn anything else about Nightmare Moon, that mare would know. Looking down, the wooden shrapnel from Nightmare’s exit laid in the dirt, the hole she came from filled with ponies looking up at him. He gave a passing glance before following Twilight to her library. He’d apologize to Mayor Mare later.

By the time he arrived, the unicorn was being stared down by Rainbow Dash. “And just what are the Elements of Harmony!? And how did you know about Nightmare Moon, huh? Are you a spy!?” She accused. Fluttershy, Applejack, Rarity, and Pinkie Pie all stood watching.

Skystrike was about to say something until Applejack pulled the mare away by her rainbow tail. “Simmer down, sally. She ain’t no spy. But she sure knows what’s going on… don't you, Twilight?”

Skystrike was noticed by Rainbow Dash, who flew up to him. “And don’t think we forgot about you!” She flew up in his face and poked his chest.

“You may ask your questions later.” He pushed her off of him. “I want to hear what Twilight has to say. Any new information will be helpful.”

Twilight looked around hesitantly before starting. “I read all about the prediction of Nightmare Moon. Some mysterious objects called the Elements of Harmony are the only things that can stop her! But I don’t know what they are! Where to find them!...I don’t even know what they do!”

Applejack turned to Skystrike. “And what about you, Sugarcube?”

All eyes were on him as he began to speak. “Similar story to Twilight’s. A couple months ago, I found out and researched on the subject, as well as the Elements. If Nightmare Moon was real, I needed to prepare. And so I did. Though the information I have on the Elements isn’t much better than yours, Twilight. One could only make the fair assumption that they were at the last place they were used.”

“Wait, you moved here to deal with Nightmare Moon?” Twilight asked. “But you researched it! Surely you know only the Elements of Harmony are the only thing that can stop her!”

Skystrike looked at her. “Well, from the punch I just delivered, I’m willing to bet against that.” He rolled his hoof. “If she can feel pain, then she can bleed. And that means there’s a way to stop her. Without the Elements.”

“The Elements of Harmony: A Reference Guide!” Pinkie said, bringing the eyes on her.

Twilight quickly ran up to her, knocking to the side. “How did you find that!?”

“It was under E~!” Pinkie began hopping about.

The unicorn looked embarrassed, wondering why she didn’t think of that, before pulling out the book and flipping to the relevant section. “There are six Elements of Harmony, but only five are known. Kindness, Laughter, Generosity, Honesty, and Loyalty. The sixth is a complete mystery… It is said that the last known location of the five elements was in the ancient castle of the royal pony sisters. It is located in what is now… the Everfree Forest!”

They all, save for Skystrike, gasped at the name. Skystrike grunted as he turned to leave. “Atlas! Where are you going!?” Applejack called out to him, who was halfway to the door.

“To attempt to stop this eternal night.” He reached for the doorknob.

“Oh no you dont!” Rainbow Dash flew in front of him, arms outstretched. “I’ve still got a lot of questions for you!”

“Every second somepony isn’t intervening that alicorn is a second she gets to prepare.” Skystrike stared daggers at her. “But I did say you could ask. So, ask.”

“Ok…” She landed in front of him. “How do we know you aren't going to go side with her!?”

“Rainbow!” Applejack frowned.

“It… is an important question, darling…” Rarity said.

“You never even got to know him, Rarity!” Applejack was about to continue before Skystrike put up a hoof.

“It is alright, Applejack.” He reassured her before answering. “You are asking me for reassurance, not an answer, but I will do so.” He put down his hoof. “If I wanted to side with her, I wouldn’t have punched her through a wall. I am not one to hold petty grudges.”

“Why didn’t you tell anyone about Nightmare Moon, then?” Pinkie Pie asked.

He frowned. “Well, ignoring the lack of ponies speaking to me, none would have believed me. And even if somepony did, we’d be back where we are right now. Any others?”

“Um…” Fluttershy squeaked at the eye contact. “How did… you prepare?”

“A thorough exploration of the necessary parts of the Everfree was sadly all I could do, aside from sword practice.”

“Wait…” Twilight thought. “Then… what do you plan on doing exactly?”

“Well, assuming yours is to find the Elements, I plan on delaying Nightmare Moon. It only makes sense that she would try to stop you. The less attention on you all, the better.”

“Wh-... You plan on walking to your death!?” Twilight asked, astounded.

“So what if I am?” He crossed his hooves. “Why do you care? Why would any of you care? Better yet, what do you plan on doing to stop me?” He frowned, but then noticed their pained faces. He sighed. “Put simply, we’re out of options, and I’m going to do what I do best.” He turned toward the door. “If there are no more questions, I have a job to do.”

“Atlas!” Applejack called out to him. He paused, not looking back at her. “I… know you didn’t have the best experience here, but… I know I can’t stop you… so thank you.”

“Make sure you come back! I need to throw you a better welcome party!” Pinkie said.

Skystrike inhaled. He’s… broken too many promises to say I’ll come back alive. But despite that, he looked back and nodded before opening the door. The stallion looked to the sky for a moment before flapping his wings and flying towards the Everfree forest.

In flight, his mind began to wander. He couldn’t get them out of his head. The times he spent with those he cared for. The jokes they shared, the pains, the happiness, the grief. The experiences. Why now? Was he really ready to die?

He attempted to shake the thoughts out of his head. It’s not like it mattered… no, it did matter. No point in dying if he could have something to live for.

So Skystrike started something… a plan… One that, if went well, everyone involved will get a happy ending. A blue fog arose from the forest. Skystrike slowed his approach.

Soon enough, the mist seemed to solidify, and Nightmare Moon hovered in the air in front of him. “So, what’s the plan, colt? Giving yourself up for the hopeless chance of others seeing the sun again?”

Skystrike put out his arms, away from his blades. “I’ve been thinking, Nightmare Moon. You were right earlier… at least partially. I don’t really have much else to live for.” Her eyes widened ever so slightly. “This world has abandoned me, ignored my existence at best, actively went against it at worst… then the ones I held the closest at one point cast me aside as well… In that sense, I suppose we are alike.”

Nightmare Moon scowled at him. “Do not compare myself to the likes of you, pegasus! You do not know my pain!”

“Maybe not, but I am willing to hear you out.” He looked at her. Her mouth stayed closed. “...Fine, no need to anyway. I just… I’ve seen enough pain in this world. I’m just hoping I can stop anymore… for you at least.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Do not act like you care for me, pony! You’re the same as the rest of those ponies, only pleading to me once I have all the power. You are nothing to me!”

“So that’s what you think this is…” Skystrike shook his head. Then he took off his helmet. She could see the sadness in his eyes. “My name is Skystrike Nebula. After loss, after pain, I… made this persona. Sure, it may have… protected me in the short term, but there've been so many mistakes I’ve made to those I care about that I’m… afraid to correct. So, I walk around, pretending to be somepony I’m not…” He sighed, flying a bit closer. “But the guilt still remains… doesn’t it, Luna?”

Nightmare Moon’s eyes widened. “How… how do you know that name!?”

“Same reason I know you were coming today, on the Summer Sun Celebration… You have to know, don't you? Your sister still cares. I saw her setting up the stars for your escape… unless you did that yourself and I’m spit balling…” Skystrike said, seeing a flash of sadness on her face. “Seems to me, Celestia still hopes that you’ll come around… but you seem pretty set in your ways… Besides, I get your anger at her, since she sent you to the moon in the first place. So, I want to lay out a couple options.”

Nightmare looked at him, the face on her back to her normal frown. “...I will humor you… what do you have in mind, Skystrike?”

“Just some outcomes. To be honest, I’m just here to stall you, but since you’re here, I know you already know that we’re looking for the Elements. But if the Elements don't exist anymore… then I will have to kill you… or try to at least. And if I do, then I’ll leave this world with you. Planned on doing it anyway. But it may work out. In the afterlife, if you believe in it, we won’t have to go alone.”

“You… you’re serious…” Her jaw almost dropped.

Skystrike sighed and looked into the eyes of his helmet. “If the Elements do exist, and they stop you, then this world will be fine, and only end up with one less soul in it. One who won’t be mourned.” He turned his helmet around and put it on, the neon eyes flashing on. His voice got a bit deeper. “But if we both live through this… and accept the rising sun… I’d like to be your friend. After you spend some time with family of course…”

Nightmare Moon looked at him, then her eyes turned to the moon. “It’s… too late for that outcome now…” She flew closer to him, the two only being a few feet away from each other.

Skystrike grabbed one of his swords by the hilt, drawing it and pointing the blade downwards for the alicorn to take. “Let’s hope not.”

Nightmare Moon took the blade with her magic. “It’s… been some time since anypony has respected me like this… A shame that it was during a duel.” The two flew back a few feet from each other. “Are you ready?”

Skystrike nodded. “Yes… though, one more thing.” Her ears perked up. “...Remember me.”

No more words needed to be shared. The two clashed blades. Both had to admit that the other was strong. Skystrike knew somewhat what to expect for an Alicorn, but she was even stronger than Celestia. Nightmare Moon wasn’t holding back. It’s been a while since one could compete with her in a test of strength.

But neither enjoyed this fight. It was something they had to do.

They pushed off each other, and the real battle begun. Nightmare Moon reeled back her head before launching a beam of magic at him. Skystrike was quick though, diving below it and flying side to side to dodge it. He raised his sword high, making Nightmare put out her blade to block it. Only when it was too late did she realize it was a feint, Skystrike spinning to land a roundhouse kick on her left side. She fell down a few feet before regaining her flight and flying high above the pegasus.

A large ball of light blue magic was generated above her before Nightmare Moon split it into dozens of spheres, sending each of them at Skystrike in irregular intervals. He dipped and dived through the ones he could, and cut down or deflected the ones he couldn't. The last few, she shot all at once, forcing Skystrike to block it, a cloud smoke blocking his vision. Then he felt two hooves land square on his back, sending him spiraling away before he regained his own flight.

Sure enough, Nightmare Moon had the advantage… and she knew. For now at least. Skystrike switched the swords in his hoof to his left before dashing at Nightmare. He slashed up at her, the alicorn dodging easily of course. What she didn’t expect was the right hoof of a pegasus seeming to charge some magic. A ball of energy was sent her way and exploded right on her chest. Taking his chance, Skystrike took the staggered Nightmare Moon by her hind legs and spun her around, throwing her into the forest below.

The trees broke at the alicorn's impact. Groaning, she picked up the sword back up with her magic and got back on her hooves. Skystrike landed on the ground in front of her. The forest around them bore the markings of their battle. Tattered branches layed about the area, smoking from Nightmare Moon’s magic.

Skystrike could see the abandoned castle behind her. He’d need to keep her attention a bit longer. Pointing his right arm at Nightmare, he fired three shots, each taken down by a magic barrier. Skystrike stomped his forehooves on the ground, sending a few loose rocks and broken branches a few feet into the air. A heavy flap of his wings sent the shrapnel at the alicorn, who flew forward with her barrier still active. He could tell from the way it interacted that it was a rather weak one which focused more on efficiency.

With his arm turning into a rifle once more, he shot a more powerful shot and reeled back his other hoof. Nightmare’s eyes widened in shock as her barrier shattered into fragments, then was met with another punch to the face. She looked back at him, blood dripping from her nose as she swung her sword down, nicking him in the wing and a large slash cutting through the left side of his armor. He pushed through the pain, turning on his front legs and bucking his opponent in the chest, then jumping backward towards Nightmare Moon, flipping into the air above her before flapping his wings downward and throwing his full weight on her back.

Before he could land it, Nightmare Moon teleported from below him and to his side while launching him away with a beam of magic. His back hit several trees, breaking through each before hitting a stone wall. The room Skystrike was in had several pillars placed throughout the room, holding up the roof that was lost to time. A platform stood in the center of the room. It seemed important… He groaned as he stood up, stabbing his sword into the marble floor below as he pushed himself up. He didn’t understand… Why was he still holding back?

Nightmare Moon huffed slightly as she approached Skystrike, wiping the blood from her nose. As she did that, Skystrike noticed the blood running down his side and head. The wounds weren’t deep, but they would take their toll given time. He inhaled deeply before standing on his hind legs. He pointed his sword at his opponent, signaling he could still fight.

They ran towards each other, clashing blades once again, both noticeably weaker than last time. Skystrike moved his blade to push hers away, launching it out of her magic. He slashed down at her, who clashed the blade with her own horn, a thick barrier of magic protecting it. She threw a punch, which Skystrike caught and put her in an arm bar. He jumped up and wrapped his legs around her neck, wrestling her to the ground and pulling.

Nightmare Moon knew at this rate, her shoulder would be dislocated, so he blasted him in the face with a continuous beam of magic. His helmet took the brunt of the attack, but the heat behind it still went through. Eventually, Nightmare knew it wasn’t working, so she teleported out of his grip and onto her hooves. Skystrike did the same, the two still huffing at each other.

“You’re one tough stallion to put down…” She decided she was tired of this. Once again she charged up his magic, condensing it in her at the tip of her horn before releasing the coalesced energy in front of her at the pegasus. Skystrike stared down the beam of energy rushing towards him. He inhaled, then exhaled, steeling himself as he swung his sword downward, pushing the blade through the beam, splitting it in two. His blade melted at the continuous barrage of magic before his sword gave in, forcing the pegasus to jump to the side to dodge. He looked at his blade, only the hilt and the bottom of the melted blade remained. He sheathed what was left of it before cracking his knuckles.

“I must commend you for your determination, Skystrike.” She threw his blade back at him. The stallion caught it… then sheathed it, putting his hooves back up. “Must you continue? You’re clearly outmatched.”

“Maybe…” He clenched his hooves. “But I’ve dealt with much, much worse than you, Nightmare Moon.” Skystrike dashed towards her, pulling back a hoof to punch her. Nightmare Moon didn’t fall for the faint this time, blocking the kick with a barrier… or attempting to. His kick shattered the protective dome, going through and nailing the alicorn of the night right on her check, knocking her to the ground. Using his wings to stabilize himself, he’d fly towards her and punch her further into the ground.

She responded by teleporting behind him, picking him up in her hooves before slamming him into the ground. He coughed up some blood, his body telling him that he couldn’t go on… Why was he still holding back? Skystrike was winded, gasping for air. He couldn’t force himself up. He still wasn’t strong enough.

She looked down at him, huffing. “By the stars, you were a tough one… Had a few tricks up your sleeve… But I’m not done with you just yet…” She turned her back to him. “Just lay back and don't kick the bucket just yet.” And with that, she teleported away.

He did so, but not my choice. The loss of blood in his body was getting to be too much. Before his consciousness faded anymore, he focused his magic into his wounds, speeding up his natural regeneration, though only temporarily. Just enough so the bleeding would stop, but not enough to close the wound. With luck, he’d get the jump on Nightmare Moon.

After a few minutes, a puff of smoke caught his attention, and from within, a coughing Twilight laid on the ground. Nightmare Moon stood on a stone platform at the end of the room, several smooth stone spheres levitating around her as she laughed, looking down at the unicorn.

Twilight looked at the limp body of Skystrike, then to Nightmare Moon. She knew what she had to do, lowering her body to the floor and dragging a forehoof along the ground with a huff.

“You’re kidding.” Nightmare Moon dropped the spheres. “You’re kidding, right?”

Twilight responded by charging her magic, running headlong at the alicorn of the night. Nightmare Moon did the same, staring daggers at her. Mere inches away from each other, Twilight casted her magic, teleporting past the alicorn who skidded to a top. She looked back to see her where she dropped the spheres.

“Just one spark…” Twilight once again charged her magic. Come on… come on!”

Nightmare Moon moved in front of the mare, knocking her away on her back with a weak push of magic. The spheres began to spark at Nightmare’s hooves. “No… no!” She looked angrily at the stones below her… only for nothing to happen. She began to laugh, her voice growing in volume as she stomped her hooves, shattering the spheres to pieces. Twilight was distraught… was it really no use? “You little FOAL!” Nightmare began to monologue. “Thinking you can defeat!? Now you will never see your princess… or your sun! The night! Will last! Forever!” Maniacal laughter filled their ears as her stary mane grew, surrounding the room with a whirlwind of magical mist.

But all three turned their attention to the doorway behind Twilight. Several voices could be heard echoing down the hall, then the shadows of five mares announced their arrival. Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Fluttershy, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash all entered the room, seeing the state of each within. Then Twilight had a look of enlightenment.

“You think you can destroy the Elements of Harmony just like that?” She looked at the distorted face of Nightmare Moon. “Well you’re wrong! Because the spirits of the Elements of Harmony… are right here!” Her friends quickly surrounded her.

The shattered fragments at Nightmare Moon’s hooves began to rattle, glowing as they floated to the air. “What?” A look of worry appeared on her face.

“Applejack, who reassured me while I was in doubt, represents the spirit of Honesty! Fluttershy, who tamed a Manticore with her compassion, represents the spirit of Kindness! Pinkie Pie, who banished fear by giggling in the face of danger, represents the spirit of Laughter! Rarity, who calmed a sorrowful serpent with a meaningful gift, represents the spirit of Generosity! And Rainbow Dash, who could not abandon her friends for her own heart’s desire, represents the spirit of Loyalty!” The shards went to their respective elements, beginning to swirl around them. “The spirits of these five ponies got us through every challenge you threw at us!”

Nightmare Moon looked at them, her worry growing by the moment. “You still don’t have the sixth element! The spark didn’t work!”

“But it did!” Twilight countered. “A different kind of spark!” She turned to the ponies behind her. “The very moment I realized how happy I was to hear you… to see you! How much I care about you! The spark ignited inside me…” She teared up. “When I realized that you all were my friends!” Light shined above her, causing all to look at the source. One final sphere descended from above, looking to have a six pointed star carved into it, similar to Twilight’s cutie mark. Nightmare Moon had to use a wing to block the blinding light. “You see, Nightmare Moon, by the… the spark that resides in the heart of us all, it creates the sixth element, the Element of Magic!”

The shards surrounding each condensed in a flash of blinding light around their necks. Soon, each had a necklace of a brilliant gem in the shape of their Cutie Marks… but Twilights was different. The stone shined brighter, lowering itself onto her forehead, giving her a beautiful tiara, her purple gemstone reflecting the light off of it. Together, the six mares focused their magic into form, a large swirling rainbow erupting from them.

Skystrike knew this was as best a chance as he was going to get. He jumped up and onto Nightmare’s back, pinning her wings to her back and putting her in a headlock. With his right forehoof, he grabbed her horn. “...Getting real tired of you teleporting… End of the road, Nightmare Moon.”

She looked back at him, then forward at the rainbow laser rushing at her. “NOOOOOO!” She cried out at the rainbow surrounding the two. He had to admit… it pained him to see her screaming like that as she flailed in a vain attempt to get Skystrike off. His vision turned white as the magic spiraling around them did its work. He felt himself fall to the floor.

Skystrike winced from the pain. He rubbed his eyes in an attempt to regain his vision. His ears rang loudly, and while he couldn’t make out anything specific, he heard several voices talking nearby. The six mares seemed to be on their hooves at least.

And then a seventh voice came, with the rising sun to boot. He groaned. It was her. Skystrike stumbled to his hooves, leaning on a wall to regain his composure. He thanked his luck that the flashing lights didn’t permanently blind him. Looking around, he noticed that Celestia, sure enough, was there, talking with her faithful student, Twilight Sparkle. But it seemed the conversation just ended, as her eyes turned to his direction.

The pegasus followed them, seeing a blue pony with a light azure mane laying on the ground where Nightmare Moon once was. He took it as it being finally over. After countless years without her, Celestia seemed to zone out all parties present as she approached the new alicorn. The blue alicorn gasped, looking up at Celestia. “It has been a thousand years since I have seen you like this.” She kneeled down to her. “Time to put our differences behind us… We were meant to rule together, little sister.”

“Sister!?” Everypony else, save for Skystrike, said in disbelief. Seems he was right… for all it was worth. Skystrike took his first step, almost crumbling at the strain of his body. It made sense, since his adrenaline wasn’t running anymore. He couldn’t feel his left wing, nor his right side above his waste… not like it mattered anyway. He moved away to give the two sisters some time. “Will you accept my friendship?”

They all looked at Luna with baited breath, waiting for an answer. With a face full of pain and regret… she did so., nuzzling her sister with tear filled eyes. “I’m so sorry! I missed you so much! Big sister!”

Celestia began to cry too. “I’ve.. missed you too.”

Skystrike tried to stealthily leave, walking to the hole in the wall he was knocked through earlier. His job was done. A family came back together. Everypony got their happy ending… so what use was left of him? And why did he feel so… empty?

Useless questions. Like they’d matter anytime soon.

“Wait!” Luna called out. All parties looked at where she was. The pegasus stopped in his tracks. “Don’t do it!” He turned to the alicorn, grunting as he took his left wing and popped it back in its socket, staring wordlessly at Luna. “You… you were wrong! I may have just met you, but I’m sure there’s so much you have to live for!” He continued to stare. “Despite everything that happened, you still tried to help me… This outcome is in no small part thanks to you, Skystrike Nebula.”

His ears went up at the mention of his name, as well as several others. He grit his teeth. A sloppy mistake he made, giving her his real name. Even if he planned on ending it, nopony should’ve known his name before doing it.

“Hold on…” Celestia walked next to her sister. “Skystrike Nebula, as in that pegasus with no magic, Skystrike Nebula?”

“The same Skystrike Nebula that I went to flight school with?” Rainbow Dash asked.

“The same Skystrike Nebula that died in the orphanage burning down?” Twilight asked.

They all looked to him for answers. Skystrike sighed. No way he’s getting out of this now. He reached for the helmet on his head, taking off the locks and pulling off. His eyes were full of anger, exemplified by the bags under his eyes. A large vertical scar ran from his forehead, over his left eye, ending at his cheek bone. The blood running down his forehead earlier stained half of his face red. “...My identity was kept a secret for a reason. I would prefer you all keep it a secret as well.”

“But… Why keep it hidden? It's been almost a decade!” Rainbow Dash flew up to him.

“As I have said before, my presence brings danger to those around me. The less one knows about me, the safer one will be.” Skystrike stated. He looked at those around him. He saw the new group of friends Twilight made. He saw the family that came back together through hardship after a thousand years. He realized why he hesitated earlier. He still had hope that things could get better. He wanted to live. With a sigh, he began to speak again. “Luna, if it makes you feel better, I …promise I won't. But for now, I… need to get cleaned up.” He took a few steps toward the exit, limping as he went. Luna reached out a hoof to help him, but he gently pushed it away. “I will be fine. Spend some time with your sister, and you all, with each other.” He referred to Luna and the main six.

Celestia put a hoof on his shoulder. “Skystrike… at least let one of us help you get home. There’s no way you can get through the Everfree on your-”

Skystrike pushed her hoof away hard. “Don’t. Touch me.” Her ears went back. “I will be fine. If you wish to speak to me, it will have to wait.”

“At least let us get you to the hospital!” Pinkie pleaded. “You’re bleeding like crazy!”

“I. Will. Be. Fine.” He huffed. “Sorry, the average pony doesn’t have a track record of treating me well here. I’m not taking any chances.” He hissed as he limped his way towards the exit. “Anything else will have to wait until after a long rest.” Skystrike said, rounding a corner.

It only took about ten minutes to walk to his house, opening the door and throwing off his armor. Only then did he realize the extent of the damage on his body.. The gash on his side was swollen pink, and the cut on his head went deeper than he thought. And that was ignoring his entire back being bruised. He made sure to clean the wounds first, then put on some herbal remedy that was taught to him some time ago.

He wrapped the bandages around himself the best he could, then crawled into bed. Tomorrow is another day… but not one he minded coming anymore.
