Well, damn!
... If Spike expected the status Quo to be post-Rainbow Rocks... why wouldn't he introduce himself to Rarity, expecting that she would also understand who he was?
I'm starting to feel bad about that overly-convoluted comment from a few chapters ago. I no longer know whether or not this takes place after Friendship Games, but I suppose it doesn't matter now.
Of course, knowing my luck, it does matter and I'm just making wrong predictions again.
6923933 I thought about starting with "It's me, Spike!" which would have fit equally well, but that's not taking into account the differences that Spike's mentality has gone through.
He's gone through two physical changes, each with their own effect on his body and, more subtly, his mind. He's not thinking things through much better out the gate, but at least before it opens he needs to run forward.
As it is "Hi, I'm Spike, the strange pony princesses talking dog who is now a human! I don't expect you to have encountered things that are weird or hard to explain so I'm going to explain in excruciating detail which would disregard your past history and experiences". Doesn't quite roll off the tongue.
Edit: To clarify, this is a failed 'Ah-ha!' moment.
