Chapter 10

"Greetings, Earthling" I said, watching the woman and her two children from my seat on the
couch
'I've always wanted to say that'

"Make yourselves at home, would you like anything to drink?" I asked, standing up

"Um, uh, er- what?"
"I'll just...give you a minute to re-adjust" I said "I've got to go, now. I'll be back in a few minutes-"

I slipped into pegasus form, and went to the front door

"Hacker and Stasis can help with anything you need"
"O-okay"

Magic flowed out of me, and encased the three

"That's just in case you go outside"
The three gave me a confused look as I left the house

"Mommy...what was that?" Ellen asked

"I...don't know..." I responded

"That...was...pretty cool, actually" Jackson admitted

"I just wish I knew what 'that' was..."

"But he was something else in the street"

"I know"

"-and it exploded"

"It didn't explode- it transformed"

"Whatever..."

Ellen stood up and walked over to the window, as soon as she did- she almost collapsed

"M-mommy, look- it's Applejack" she said, pointing out the window

"Why do they have to be so mean, daddy?" Mirror sniffled
"I don't know, honey...that's just the way they are..." I said, shooting glares at the two fillies walking in the opposite direction
"So there's nothing I can do?"
"Not really...the best I could think of would be to either try to ignore them, or at least attempt to make friends"
"Isn't there a third option?"
"I'm afraid not..."
"Not even if I cocoon them?"
"Mirror" I said warningly

I looked around- noticing nopony in sight, I dropped my voice to a whisper

"We don't cocoon ponies, or anything else for that matter- it's against the law, not to mention just wrong"
"Even if they really deserve it?"
"Especially then, who knows? They might have problems at home, or with themselves...you can't just do that to somepony, or someone"
"Okay..."
"Now can you promise?"
"I promise daddy, I won't never hurt anypony" she pledged

"Alright, now- let's get home, there are a few people I want you to meet"

"I...really...can't believe it..." I said, staring dumbfoundedly out the window
"I know right? They're real! Oh I can't wait to meet them!" Ellen squealed
"You might have a little trouble with that" Jackson deadpanned
"Oh, here he comes! And it looks like he's got another pony with him"

Jackson rolled his eyes and walked away from the window

The door opened and the pegasus walked into the house with a small normal pony on his back

"Mirror, this is Ellen, Jackson and their mother- they'll be staying with us for a little while" the creature said, slipping back into its normal form

"N-nice to meet you"
"H-hello"

Awkward silence

"Mirror, why don't you go show them your room? She and I can talk out here"
"Um...okay..."
"Will they be safe with...her?"
"Yes, they will" I sighed "Now I'm sure you have some questions"
"No, not at all" she deadpanned
"Well, take a seat, then"

She hesitantly sat down

"What is all of this?" she asked
"My home" I replied "The town itself is Ponyville"
"Now tell me- what am I doing in a town full of cartoon ponies?!"
"What?"
"Don't play dumb with me- I've seen them running around out there"
"Yes, I'm well aware of that..."
"Answer me! Where is this place?!"

She was starting to hyperventilate now

"I- I- I'm not sure anymore...I just want this to end...to go home..."
"Is that what you really want?"
"I don't know! We can't go back, and we can't stay here"

I got up and pinned her arms at her sides

She shook in fear as she stared into my eyes

"Listen to me- you and your children can stay here until you get everything sorted out; I
know what it's like to be in your position"

She took a few deep breaths, once she was calm enough, I let go of her

"All of this is insane, you know that? One minute I'm in New York, the next I'm here talking to you in a town full of talking ponies"
"You get used to it, believe me"

She cocked an eyebrow
"I can't believe I just said that..." I facepalmed "So, what's your name?"

"I'm Jane, who are you?"
"My name is Sam, Mirror is with your kids"
"How is she related to you?"
"She's my daughter"
"With as young as you look? She couldn't possibly be your biological daughter"
"She's not- she came from a different hive"
"Uh-huh...how did you two meet?"
"When I was first brought here, I met her back in her own hive, when it was time for me to leave- she wanted to come with me"
"Wow...and she's been with you ever since?"
"Yep, I'm lucky to have her"

"Hi Mister Silent!" Dinky greeted, hopping through the front door with Ditzy "Is Mirror in her room?"
"Hey there, Dinks- yeah, she is"
Dinky trotted out of the living room and into the hall

"How are you, Ditzy? Everything at the Post Office going okay?"
"I'm fine, I'm off duty for a little while, I've been meaning to spend some time with Sparkler- just the two of us, y'know? I love Dinky, but she can be a hooful sometimes..."
"I know what you mean, you love the both of them, but it's nice to spend time with them one at a time every once in a while"
"Yeah" she smiled
"You'll have to bring Sparkler over sometime, I'd love to meet her"
"I'm sure she'd enjoy that, maybe I'll bring her with me next time Dinky comes to visit"

I nodded and she trotted to the door

"Goodbye Silent, and thanks for watching Dinky on such short notice"
"No problem, any time Ditzy"
The cross-eyed mare smiled as she left the house

I smiled to myself as I heard the two foals playing in Mirror's room

The moon was beginning to rise as I sat down with Mirror in her room, both of us in our natural forms. I was taking up most of the bed; my hooves dangling comically over the far end
Mirror was currently curled up in my arms, as I read from a foal's book.

"...and that's how Equestria was made" I finished
"That's not how the story goes" she giggled
"Oh yeah? How does it go?"
"You left out the part with the Tickle Monster"
"There was a Tickle Monster?"
"Of course there was!"
"Well, you know what I think?"
"What?"
"I think you, have a very good imagination" I said, 'booping' her on the nose
"I do, don't I?"
"You know what else?"
"What?"

Without warning, I pressed my lips to her tummy and blew, making her squeal as she flailed her hooves.
She continued laughing as I tossed her in the air, when she landed back in my arms- I blew another rasberry on her tummy, renewing her laughter.

"Has the wittwe fiwwy had enough?" I giggled, tickling her
"Yes! I give! I give!" she shrieked
I stopped tickling her, and got off the bed- I set her down and pulled the covers over her

"Goodnight Daddy, I love you" she yawned
"I love you too, Mirror"
I knelt down to plant a small kiss near the base of her horn, careful not to gouge myself on it in the process.

"Daddy?"
"Yes?"
"What happens when you get married?"
'What?'
"I don't know how to answer that...why?"
"Well, when ponies get married, they usually have foals, and when that happens- all the older kids get forgotten...if you marry Miss Elaine, what's gonna happen to me?" she sniffled

'Oh, you adorable little thing-'

"Mirror, if I get married, it won't be for a very long time- and if by some chance I have twenty foals, I'll still love you"

That was enough to reassure her as she got comfortable underneath the blankets
I stood up and left the room, turning off the light as I went

I walked down to my own room as Jane was about to enter her own
"Putting your kids to sleep?"
"Yeah, you?"
"Same"
"..."
"Well, goodnight"
"Wait!"
"Yeah?"
"I um, wanted to thank you- for what you've done for us..."
"It's no problem, goodnight" I said, closing the door to my room

'What's that on my tongue?' I wondered, smacking my lips

'No, it can't be...'

That familiar taste in my mouth was something I'd only tasted before I left Earth

It was love...

...but the question was, where did it come from?
