I guess a good place to start would be Splintershard's more primitive version of this magic system.
In Splintershard, magic is driven primarily by intent and willpower, with some amount of vague "mana" being thrown around as an expendable source of energy that replenishes itself with time.
There isn't all too much beyond these rudimentary guidelines, aside from the usual blerbs about practice leading to improvement

Over the first couple chapters that I wrote, Splintershard went under the title of "Whispernot", hence why Starlight was (and still is) occasionally referred to as "Whisper". In fact, I didn't even have the concept of Splintershard's world set in stone until around the 3rd chapter or so, when I decided that I could build on the world of The Old Collector.
Sunbeam covers the majority of Splintershard's major events in a series of bite-sized, diary entry-style chapters. Though most of what's happened so far has only been hinting at future events, there's already some clear links being developed!

So anyway, the next chapter to be published for Splintershard is going to refocus on the main quest to find the scroll copies. The next chapter I'm planning is also focused on it. Once the scroll plot is done and over with, we're either gonna be seeing a war arc or a rediscovery (of Twilight Sparkle) arc, depending on how things play out.
Six little ponies stood side-by-side. One went out quietly, with hardly even a sigh. Five little ponies stayed steadfast friends. Another sought adventure, but met their end. Four little ponies watched the years fly by. One more would pass, before another one would die. Three little ponies-- their friendship unsurpassed. The next to pass was certainly not the last. Two little ponies shared in their sadness. It wouldn't be long before one slipped into madness.
All the chapters that are gonna go up on June 10 are prolly gonna be pasted into a GDoc. I'd just like a chance to tweak things beforehand, given the size of this project.
Once that chapter's out, I'll be putting the story on a short hiatus to both work on some other stories and to build back up my chapter stash. I'll only be doing hiatuses like this in between major and minor story arcs, so the next chapter that comes after tomorrow's is gonna be the beginning of a whole new arc!
