When I recommend stories that go into M territory, I prefer to give a heads up for folks that things are going to be Not Safe For Work.
This is me giving that warning now, because there's a lot of profanity coming up.
Because this week's connecting theme is profanity.
Oh, and Rarity.
Alright - after a lot of drama yesterday that's psychologically drained me and feeling under the weather from my Covid vax, I'm pulling a mulligan today.
And by 'mulligan' I mean that I'm using my reserve blog which flushes four stories out of my backlog rather than one new and one backlog. So... yeah, deal with twice as much story.
This week's pair has been sitting in my ready queue for the longest - I originally selected it as an alternate pair for #116 back in June. I opted to use the other set because their connecting theme was slightly less spoiler-y for the G5 episodes I was referencing, but it's now been eight months so I no longer feel bad. And they've been waiting long enough!
So a new Indiana Jones movie came out just recently, and that's as good an excuse as any to bring the focus on to our own local version - Daring Do!
That's it. That's the pitch.
It's been a hell of a day, what can I say. They're not all gonna be cunning and artful openings.
Fortunately, the stories are!
The Wonderbolts. An elite stunt team filled with the best, the brightest, the fastest… okay, wait, so to be sure we're clear here by 'the brightest' I'm talking about colors. Or contrails. Certainly not brains.
I mean Rainbow Dash is right there.
So let's talk a little about some of their, ah. Less than perfect moments.
Right now, we're at a bit of a crossroads in terms of seasons. We're just past Halloween and all the creepy, scary things that implies. And now the great Christmas juggernaut is moving into gear, preparing to crush us all under its inevitable wheels of cheer.
Unlucky update 113! So let's read about the most cursed thing: children.
Well, children and the horrible things that happen to them.
The more recent of the two stories brings us to Shaslan's Written in Synthetic Blood. (And I'll lead with a warning to read the long description's warnings. They are not joking.)
A new set of G5 episodes is out, and given what happened in them? This seems to lead easily into a particular trio of troublemakers and their unending obsession.
And so we lead with Bring Me the Heads of the Cutie Mark Crusaders! by CCC.
Trixie is one of my favorite ponies to write or read about, mostly due to her flexibility. Some folks have probably heard me refer to her as 'literary lubricant' - she's a capable of making any story situation flow easier.
Transitioning but staying on a similar note from last week, I'm actually gonna hit up the newest author to come to my Newbies shelf. The author in question put out a damn good story about a month ago that matches up well with a story I've wanted to feature for a while - so good fortune! I love it when things come together like that.
Right from the start of the series, one of Princess Celestia's defining traits is her role as teacher and mentor: Twilight wouldn't be Twilight if Celestia hadn't been there to guide her. And I think this week I'll bring some focus on her in that role, which is great because I've got two excellent (and fairly bulky!) pieces that are both by significantly underappreciated authors.
So since I've been doing a lot of bigger names lately, it's probably about time I swing back around and bring the spotlight to some newer writers again. And we're actually doing well on that front! I've got a half-dozen new writer stories in the chamber - there's been some real good stuff this past quarter and I'm eager to point a few of them out.
So there's a lot of weird ships out there. You get a few that work. Some are odd but fun. And a handful, once you hear about them and think a little, go "Oh. Ooooooh." And today I've got a pair that fall under that category. Because lemme tell you, pre-exile Princess Luna/Doctor Whooves is not one I would have anticipated but these two stories make it work.
Rounding out the alicorn set, we dip back to Flurry Heart.

So a quick behind-the-scenes on this blog series: I keep two running bookshelves for it in the background. One is just an unorganized pile of things I've read that I enjoyed and am considering bringing up, while the other is a more specific staging area where I pair up compatible stories for later posting. I've usually got about three months worth in the staging area and draw from them as situation and mood demand, plus a few more that I'm keeping in my pocket for specific circumstances (like
So I'm a bit delayed today because I couldn't handle this on my lunch hour - I needed to get home first and grab an image or two. Since, well.
Normally, I pick stories to use that have a thematic connection: the same main character, similar thematic notes, so on. This month I'm gonna have a bit of fun and pull out story sets that have really weird connections. This week is a perfect example: two horror stories about hugs.
We've got a double shot of FlutterCord pain this week from some big guns, so strap in.
The author of our first this week is Shakespearicles - known primarily as a porn writer (and for controversial opinions), folks sometimes forget that Shakes is also a really really good writer. The lead story today is an excellent example of that: Let Me Go.
A good mystery really gets the heart pumping and the mind moving - it's both literature and puzzle in one, where the reader tries to figure things out before the characters in the story do. And today we've got two of my favorites on the site for that.
First up, we've got the more classical mystery of Shrink Laureate's The Fishbowl.
Continuing the focus on newer authors, I'm going to swing us in a melancholy direction today. These three stories share the Sad tag, though I'll note that they have their more shining moments, too.
