This thread is exactly what it sounds like. Let us meet your character and get to know them, what can they do, what is their role in the story they come from, what are they like?

Try to give a decent amount of detail for your characters since that means it's easier to give advice on where they can be improved or on what works at the moment. Feel free to comment on each others characters and share ideas but as usual please keep civil.

I shall introduce one of my own for a starter:

Hoodwink is an Earth Pony from Canterlot. Hoodwink is an assumed name that he took to replace his old name (Tea Leaf) when he became a master thief who stole to live a luxurious life. After a while of ripping off nobles he got bored with that and decided to try plundering some ancient tombs and temples for especially valuable artifacts.

This ambitious undertaking eventually led to him getting arrested by some of Celestia's guards who were also examining the temple in question. Seeing the value in his skills and seeing that he wasn't truly a bad pony, Celestia offered him a job as her expert when it comes to ancient ruins, temples and etc. because he showed a high aptitude for not only infiltrating them without getting caught in the inevitable dangers of them but also able to evaluate and retrieve the treasures with ease.

He is currently living in a manor house in Canterlot and takes great joy out of mocking the nobles who are repulsed that a "common thief" is in Celestias good graces.

Well, I should introduce mine then!

My very first and thus far one of my most established characters is called Oathbound.
He's an Earth Pony from Canterlot, just like Hoodwink from ObsidianPony's post.
However, here's where the similarities end for the most part.
Oathbound was originally a wanderer with no parents, but was eventually rescued by a squad of Princess Celestia's guard who were in the area. They directed him to Canterlot, which he has called his city of birth ever since, even if he wasn't actually born there. He had no idea how to function in society due to having no education. Celestia saw this and bailed him out of jail when he was caught stealing. She took him under her wing and taught him all he needed to know about not getting into trouble. The earth pony wanted to repay her kindness and began to serve her as a guard.

He eventually was given an amulet that gave him the abilities of a unicorn and he was asked if he would like to be the captain of the Canterlot guard. He accepted and served his princess for a few more years until an assassination attempt on Celestia's life happened. The alicorn lived, but Oath couldn't deal with the shame. He ran away and became a hermit. Later on he returned and after some stuff involving the Mane 6 and Celestia herself he became the captain of the Ponyville guard, which he is to this day.

History: When he was a colt, his magic powers were not good enough for Celestia's school of gifted unicorns. He grew up a regular unicorn always being picked on for being a bookworm and non magic user. He didn't know how to do most magic like other unicorns and it took him a long time learn magic. He didn't like the way his life was turning at all until he came upon a dying black cloaked stallion just outside Canterlot who gave him a map of the whereabouts of the forbidden arts, and if were to get them he would be one of the most powerful sorcerers of all time...

Convinced by the stallions sayings, he immediately started his travel after his death. The map he was using however were places beyond the land of equestria, the lands beyond where what this particular map showed. Lands that has not been seen by many pony folk throughout the land. He needs someone however to venture with him into these lands. So he traveled around equestria in search for a companion ever since.

First, Human in Equestria. Explanation please.

Two, friends with Discord and the Princesses? Not only is that completely contradictory to what's shown here but I find that highly unlikely.

Three, how the hell is he somehow able to kill members of the Mane 6? That isn't an easy feat.

Four, the idea of him killing Celestia is laughable.

Five, evil circus. Why?

Six, yes, eye colour and so on in fact DO matter as does a name even if it's not a real one.

Final conclusion. This sounds like an awful compilation of grimdark cliches whether through not putting in enough details (I can only go on what you give me after all) or just because there is nothing to this guy.

Dream Chaser is my favorite OC. He's an earth pony stallion, red mane, gold coat and gold eyes.

His cutie mark is obscured by scars, but it was once three silver shooting stars. His special talent was running until he had his legs broken so badly that neither medicine or magic could help.

He's from my story, Chasing Dreams, and it follows him ten years after the Equestria Games from Season 3 of the actual show. He's ashamed to be seen in public and hates being treated as a charity case. He's constantly haunted by his past and tormented by visions of his former lover, Dream Catcher.

His character develops over the course of the story as he realizes he can still serve a purpose. He finds himself happy once more after taking on a young apprentice who happens to be the son of his nurse. His bond with this colt and his mother grow throughout the story as they encounter difficult obstacles.

His backstory prior to his legs becoming mutilated is very cheerful. Successful at all he did, beautiful love interest with mutual feelings, morally upstanding, turned enemies to friends, and so on. Everything after the crippling in the ten years prior to Chasing Dream beginning is nothing but tragic. Without spoiling too much, he literally loses everything and every pony that had ever been important to him.

So yeah...I think I developed a solid character.

Verde Tin is a unicorn originally from Trottingham although she moved to Canterlot with her mother when she was very young, so much so that she doesn't really remember her place of birth. Her mother, for reasons she's never understood or felt the need to inquire into, has never told her anything about who sired her but since she looks very much like her mother, she's always assumed that her father was another unicorn with features very similar to those of her mother. Although her mother is officially married to a member of the Night Guard, a thestral named Razor Back, Verde has always treated the lighthearted and energetic (much) older mare as a friend and peer rather than a second mother. Verde is prodigiously intelligent with a special talent focused on artisanship. While she doesn't have a great deal of magic, she can use what she has with immense precision and is especially good with runework and other very fine work as in watchmaking and later, projectile weapons.

2310176So my guy is named Karolen, he's not yet 23 years old, but he is an earth pony from Manehattan, Throughout his short life he experienced many horrors such as domestic abuse, hate, depression, and self injurious behavior, and has always been the guy who's read a ton of philosophy and is trying to prove himself as a good pony for even his own parents used to tease him about being useless idiot, he never fit in so well with society because of his mental illnesses but found his way through trial and error. He hated his father who abused his mother and had entire side of the family which was so depraved. He was on the verge of insanity until he met Lyra. She became his best friend. So at age 21 he joined a ragtag band of civilian fighters called the Warsaws. Celestia and Luna took notice of this group and officially commissioned them for northern front from which the original settlers of Equestria came from but is now infested with all sorts of crap such as the caribou tribes, the Diamond Dogs, and everything in general. For the last two years he waged trench warfare in the north with the Warsaws, made many friends in the army. And now supernatural anomalies have been happening. On the 11th of November, the final attack came and the whole regiment was wiped out, but they came back as ghosts(sort of like in that Lord of the Rings movie where they get a ghost army to help them fight). But they were still ponies, just ghosts for the Windigo used their crazy magic to make them awesomesauce. So then the Warsaws were just big ghost army going around Equestria trying to find a way home. But now, Lyra mourns his death.

Silverwing was born on May 24th, 965 AB (After Banishment) in the city of Trottingham to Pegasi parents who owned their own small business there. He received the name Silverwing because of the unusual silverish shimmer to the feathers on his right wing. His youth was typical for a Pegasi, going to Flight Camp in the summers, and schooling the rest of the year.

He received his cutie mark while defending his friends from a group of older bullies. The shield represents his drive to defend that which he loves.

After graduation, he joined the Royal Guard at the age of 18. Within five years, he had obtained the rank of Sergeant. Twelve years later, at the age of 35, when Princess Luna returned, he applied to join the newly forming Lunar Guard. He was to be accepted as a Luna Guard member, when he lost his left wing in a collision during a combat flight training exercise as his Company's 1st Sergeant.

Taking a medical retirement, he was recruited into the Equestrian Diplomatic Services, and quickly rose through the ranks to become the Assistant Director of Diplomatic Relations (Griffica) in four years time. He leads the Diplomatic team involved with the new treaty with the Griffin Nation.

It is during this time, five years after Luna's return, that the Princess of the Night meets him, and within a month, they enter a relationship together. as part of the treaty with Griffica, they, along with two Companies of Royal Guards, as well as a full diplomatic team and support personal travel to Griffica, where they become trapped by a successful coup and now, they have to fight their way back to their home lands.

Silverwing is a talented artist, who enjoys painting and drawing. He is also an inventive pony, and built a hang glider to give him a limited sense of flight, which he lost when he lost his wing.

Fuck it, I'll through mine in the mix. He's from one of my newest stories, called When the Lightning Strikes, so if you're reading it or want to... Major Spoliers ahoy.

Lightning Streak is a unicorn who was born in Canterlot, but raised himself after his parents abandoned him at the age of four. Growing up as he did, he always had a strong sense of loyalty and compassion towards others who were in the same boat, eventually starting a "family" of orphans to make up for his lack of one, as well as that of the others, at the age of twelve. These ponies always looked up to him as the "big brother" that many of them never had, as he always looked out for them above himself. By the time he reached the age of thirteen, he still didn't have his cutie mark, despite most of the other members of his group having theirs with the exception of their resident asshole, Boulder. That wouldn't be the case for very long though, because that year Lightning Streak came across a filly in the alley who was getting beat up. After he fought off the bullies, he took the filly to join his family, learning that her parents had been killed mere weeks before in Cloudsdale. He took the young Rainbow Dash(SURPRISE!) under his metaphorical wing, teaching her all that he knew about being a good pony; compassion to those who are less fortunate, courage in the face of adversity, and above all else, loyalty to those close to you. Two years later, at the age of fifteen, he got desperate for money to buy supplies with, and held up a small store, incapacitating the clerk with a lightning bolt, earning him his cutie mark for lightning magic. Later that day, he was arrested and charged with not only the robbery, but the murder of the clerk, and sentenced to twelve years in prison. Now, he's free, and reunited with Rainbow in Ponyville, though his time behind bars has left him weak and dangerously thin. He will soon reunite with the rest of his family as well, eventually meeting his parents for the first time he can remember. He won't be happy about that.

Some even went as far to say that his personality was an essence of the old world, where they sighted his ways of chivalry and humility. The Spearhead name reigns all the way back to the days of Equestria's founding, when Earth ponies were just beginning to form the ranks of what would be known as the Equestrian Guard (the Royal Guard of the olden days).

Nickname Meaning: "Dust" was a derogatory nickname given to him by some of the Unicorns and Pegasi of his basic training class for his result of being slow during the training runs. However, Dusty saw past this and used it as motivation to out do his classmates in the fields of honor, courage and commitment. This, in turn, landed him a spot among the Royal Guards as an NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer).

He'll either continue the family lineage, or he'll die a glorious death that will be remembered long into the future, just as any true Spearhead would if given the chance.
Immediate Goals: Finish his Officer training at the Officer Candidate Academy in Canterlot.
Long-term Goals: Start a family of his own and continue the Spearhead lineage, or continue working in the Royal Guard until he is physically unfit to do so.
How will they be accomplished?: Dusty will continue to apply himself towards earning his Officer title before he continues to advance his career in the Guard. As for starting a family, he'll just let it happen instead of worrying about it. And if it doesn't, he'll just accept it and continue his role in the Royal Guard.
How will this affect others?: Outside of the Guard-spectrum, the fact that he's an Officer won't affect his being as the compassionate, dutiful stallion that his friends know him for. For a family, his lover that becomes his wife will be one lucky mare.

My OC's name is Prince Francois Midnight, Unicorn son of Princess Luna. 200 years ago he attempted to overthrow Celestia, but was defeated, turned into a human, and sent to Earth. Luna uses some unstable magic that inadvertently sends her and Rainbow Dash (who tried to get Luna away from the malfunctioning magic) to Earth where they crash into his house. Luna performs the spell again and sends them to Equestria. Celestia is convinced to give him another chance and changes him back.

He meets his cousins, Blueblood and Cadence. As well as his new family members, Shining Armor (who takes an instant dislike of him) and his niece Dusk Shine, (couldn't come up with anything better, sue me) Shining and Cadence's 3-month old filly.

Luna takes him to Ponyville where he meets the Mane 6. When he meets Twilight, she is less than receptive to him because she knows what he did. He stays the night in Ponyville to try and convince Twilight to trust him, upon failing that, he murders her and frames Rarity.

Rainbow Dash has a feeling that Francois is behind it, and sends a letter to Celestia telling her of her suspicions. Francois is told of this by first Luna, then Celestia. He goes to Rainbow's cloud home to ask her about it, things get heated, they end up fighting, and it ends with a kitchen knife in RD's chest.

This one scares me a bit. Although there's no information in the show regarding that Luna doesn't have a son (other than her age of course), it seems a little too cliche to have an OC that's directly related to the two rulers of Equestria. I think this would be entertaining if he were the son of Blueblood, or even Fancy Pants for that matter. But that's just me.

Disregarding the Equestria Girls movie, I'm highly inclined to believe that most ponies don't know what a human is, let alone know where they live or even belong. But on the other half of this sentence, I'm highly suspicious of some lazy play due to lack of history. I honestly believe that Celestia could easily take on a Unicorn without getting a scratch, even if that Unicorn was birthed with a mana force that could match that of Luna.

Whoa there, cowboy. We know that Rainbow Dash is loyal, but I'm really seeing this as only an excuse for Rainbow Dash to come along. And they magically crash into his house out of all the places on Earth? I'm sure Dash would be intrigued if they were to have landed near the Eiffel Tower or even the Seattle Space Needle, and I'm definitely sure that Luna would be dumbfounded to find the space station that sends craft to the place she was exiled to (ahem, the moon).

Sorry to chew you out on the whole magic deal, but who in their right mind would attempt to use another unstable spell to get back home, at least not without practice? Luna's smarter than this. In fact, that'd actually add context to the story if Luna had to practice the spell in order to get it to work.

It took Celestia 1000 years for her to finally come to terms with herself that she did a horrible thing that ended up saving the nation in the future. What makes you think she'll forgive someone who tried to overthrow her in 200 years? I actually want to know the motive behind his attempt at the political upheaval of Celestia.

Big no-no right here. I learned this the hard way when I first came to the fandom (luckily I didn't create a black and red Alicorn either). There has to be a legitimate reason behind Luna wanting to take him to Ponyville to meet them. Maybe she hoped that one of them could maybe change his sourpuss attitude that he's got going on? You should elaborate more on that.

Final Analysis: Prince Francois Midnight is currently a Gary-Stu. I suggest investing more into his backstory and his personality, as well as the fact that he got turned into a human and was sent to Earth as punishment for something as major as Luna turning into Nightmare Moon (I still don't get how he got forgiven quicker than Celestia could forgiven herself ). He's savable, but only if you choose to take my advice on giving him more dimension.

Eh, why not. I have 2 pony ocs, one human turned into a pony and one human self-insert.

The HiE's name is Mélanie. She will be in a Discord love story called "Love, Lies and Chaos" She ended up in Equestria after a "Failed spell" from Celestia and Twilight. Mélanie is a self-insert but I keep her as close as possible to me. I can't explain much about the failed spell because that's one of the main plot point of her story. Mélanie is a short, chubby girl with short brown hair and dark brown eyes. Her skin is pale, but blush extremely easily, be it because of her emotions or just because of the temperature. She wear glasses and if she remove them, she can barely see a few feet away. Personality-wise, she's very open-minded and she never judge someone before getting to know them. She's smart, fun-loving, forgiving and friendly. While she's friendly when people talk to her, it's very rare that she will be the one to start a talk. Mélanie doesn't want to bother anyone, so she would rarely talk if someone doesn't talk to her first and while she will be happy to help someone, she won't ask for help even if she need it. Her inability to ask for help often caused some of her troubles to become much worse. She like to read, but only fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and the likes. It's extremely difficult for her to show her true emotions, she usually just act as if she's fine, no matter what she really feel, to not worry or bother anyone. She's a closet pervert, tend to be a bit lazy and she sometime can show a dark sense of humour and a sarcastic side if she's annoyed. She's very difficult to anger, but if you do manage to anger her, you will wish you didn't.

Eddy Goodwill was born and raised in Manehatten, he was never really social, and friends were at the bottom of his list.

Sounds a little bit like Twilight (in a good way of course! ). The "never really social" part is a bit cliche to me, but maybe elaborating on why he was would be a great place to start.

While still a social hermit, he soon met the rowdy, polar opposite of himself, Victor L. Cannon, who crash landed into his room by accident. Eddy soon adopted a poised and sophisticated lifestyle, attending private parties and other social events, which led him to meet Octavia.

This is actually interesting. And by this, I mean I want to know more about it! What'd Victor do for a living compared to Eddy being a social hermit? Was Victor the reason that Eddy changed from being a social outcast to a regal party-goer? And meeting Octavia is a nice touch. I actually did that for Dusty when he was living out his days in Canterlot prior to Luna's Return in an old story.

Octavia soon became Eddy's closest friend and his dearest, but one thing held back any romantic advances, fear, fear of being rejected. So he kept his deepest feelings concealed and buried, causing him emotional distress.

I want to know more! What led to his romantic feelings for Octavia? And keeping those feelings hidden leads to a simple-yet-elegant internal conflict for Eddy. I know for a fact if Dusty were to hide his feelings for one of his love interests, he'd eventually start to either lash out at ponies trying to prod at him or hide himself away from everypony.

Final Result: Overall, Eddy Goodwill is lacking in the character history department, as well as early character development. I suggest you elaborate more on the "social hermit stage" of him, as well as the feelings that he developed for Octavia. Props for the internal conflict issue he has though.

Bio : Wildlife Care is a veterinarian that works from a cottage that is just outside of the Everfree Forest, he is renting the cottage from Flutteryshy. He is often traversing the wilds of the words while using simple magical items that he purchases from the city to make his work easier. He is fascinated by the biological and magical properties of the world around him, he is experienced enough to safely deal with most of the sentient wildlife without causing too much ecological problems. He does however have a massive fear of timberwolves and will freeze up in their presences, this is due to watching a friends of his get disemboweled by the creatures.
