Hey everybrony!
I wanna discuss the movie "My Little Pony: A New Generation" a little. Especially that phrase... and what we saw at the end.
Personally, I like the movie and feel it gave us a familiar impression we felt from the prior generation in a refreshing kind of way despite it being a sort of reboot. A great deal of its content doesn't make sense (at least, not yet) and it is confirmed to be a sequel to "Friendship is Magic" in some capacity.
We saw hints and clues and evidence to confirm that here and there around the movie, especially the toys Sunny Starscout has of the Mane Six, the Wonderbolts poster, the fact the land is still called Equestria.... and the six-pointed star that was Twilight Sparkle's cutie-mark we saw here and there (like Argyle's pendant, Sunny's journal, the stained glass window, etc).
Evidently it's been a long time between this new generation and the end of the last one, but it was a line, spoken by Argyle Starshine, that hints at how long it's been. While telling the story of Equestria's past and how ponykind was once united in friendship and harmony to his daughter, Sunny, Argyle said "ancient Equestria".
Now, for something to be called "ancient" is kinda broad and not exactly definite. For the sake of argument, let's say 1000 years, as it was between the defeat and prophesied return of Nightmare Moon. Ergo... it has probably been around one thousand years since the end of "Friendship is Magic" to the time around Sunny's fillyhood.
Long enough for all of Twilight's hard work to have been undone and forgotten, provided the right events occurred in that interim.
Hitch Trailblazer mentioned that the earth pony history books they learned in school said these awful things about unicorns and pegasi (reading minds, shooting lasers, frying brains, snatching earth ponies from the ground and carrying them away, etc.), which leads me to think history was written, or more likely unwritten, by some ill-minded earth ponies.
The pegasi and unicorns likewise believed some unflattering myths and lies about the earth ponies and each other.
And of course, Magic was lost, depriving unicorns of their ability to cast spells and pegasi their ability to fly. The earth ponies didn't notice the lack of magic because their own was more subtle and nuanced. This leads me to believe that whatever caused the schism between the pony tribes had the unfortunate side-effect of stripping them of their magical powers.
Sunny mistakenly believed some crystals had to be united to restore magic ponykind, only to find that was false. Eventually, she realized that there was no magical solution to the actual problem and that the real solution was for the three pony tribes to put their differences behind them and come together for the sake of friendship, love, and harmony, and when they did the crystals reacted by restoring magic to all and rewarding Sunny by making her an alicorn (though I feel that she may still have a ways to go because her horn and wings looked like they were made of energy, not flesh, blood, bone or feather).
So now, magic is restored to ponykind, who are likewise reunited in friendship and harmony.
Then, at the end of the movie... we saw three little pony foals, a unicorn, a pegasus and an earth pony, running off to play together... and the earth pony's hoofprints lit up with a subtle rainbow-colored energy and the outline of a heart in the hoof!
This leads me to believe that perhaps the earth ponies have gained (or maybe regained) a magical power(s) of their own, which is focused into their hooves. Not only that, the phrase "Hoof to Heart" is clearly connected to this phenomenon due to the shape of the heart within the hoof!
Alas, there's still not enough pieces to this puzzle, so we're gonna have to wait until G5 continues with more content, what with it having a planned TV series and 44-minute special. I sincerely hope we'll get answers and find out more. While the movie kicked things off with a promising start, it still left questions unanswered but that's a good thing becuz it gives us more to look forward to.
I too am very interested in seeing what happens next in G5. I hope the main 5 go out to see what else Argyle found when collected the things we saw in the Lighthouse.
G5 has my attention and I am eagerly awaiting to see what comes. But I for one have good feelings.
I honestly fell in love with this movie the minute it appeared, especially when all three pony groups are reunited once again after being separated from one another for who knows how long.
