I write too much too little for no reason. Now I'm off to hyperfixate on detailing that bush.

It's been three whole years since I started writing! Woohoo! All that time wasted thinking about ponies! :pinkiehappy:

    Jinx, where ya been?

Hiya! How's tricks? Are you doing well?

Sorry I've not been around or writing much for, like, a month. I put out a side story a 'lil while ago, but it's honestly not my best work. You can go read it if you haven't, but I can do better—and I should've done better. It's just that writing has been... a tenuous activity for me for awhile now.

A freaky dream, and the continuation of The Stereotypical Necromancer!

So, I'm guessing there's one of those two things you're probably more interested in, yeah?

Well, too bad! I'm talking about the dream I had last night, first! :rainbowwild:

My notes are all horrid garbage and I need to rewrite them. · 4:07am Aug 21st, 2021

Basically what it says on the tin. Past me is an illiterate fool who took notes to seem cool. Current me actually cares about literary integrity, and bullet points and curt, vague statements aren't very thorough. :ajbemused:

Proper characterization is suddenly very important to me, so I'm taking the liberty of writing somewhat detailed character analysis' that are loosely based off of episodes and my own interpretations and thoughts and feelings and some other word that further explains my processes.

Oh, and if you're looking for the point: the next chapter's gonna take a bit. Even beyond what I'm trying to do to my notes, I actually just got distracted with some regular stuff.

Normally, my delay excuses point childishly and transparently to writer's block and 'research'; but this time I actually just got somewhat addicted to Dragon Age for a couple days.

Look at that, I have interests! :twilightsheepish:

Aww, more wait... And hurray quality!
Question: i would like to know the coordinates of the ideal balance between character realism and canon. Also, how much should characters drive the story instead of allowing the story to drive the character like in a cheap horror movie?

Oh no, someone's asking me for writing advice. How do I break it to them that I just wing it entirely?! :twilightoops:

But for real, that's a pretty hard question to drop on a guy; and for no small part due to its broadness. Personally, on the matter of canon to fanon ratio, I tend to mix the topics rather heavily. I enjoy taking many things seen in canon, and attempting to apply them realistically. For instance, when characterizing Rainbow Dash, I have extrapolated several kinds of dependency issues based on her growing up with overbearing parents. It's not necessarily something that's true about the character, but it can be reasonably argued given what is shown about her need for attention and otherwise 'cool' demeanor.

And your second question may be even harder to answer, mostly because I'm having trouble even conceptualizing what you're asking. The deeper ideas of plot progression and character balance is something I personally struggle with; so i'm not sure how helpful my advice can be. When I write, I mostly focus on the realism of the scene, and how my character is reacting to it. I don't even really visualize it as a story, because it's what my character is going through in his life.

I have often said that my story basically writes itself, and that's because I write it in a way that it sort of does. I allow events to pop up as they come, with some forward thinking applied for the future. With nearly every chapter I write, I only start with a barebones understanding of how it should start, and what I want from the chapter. Once I have a grasp on that, I simply allow my character to get himself there.

So, in a writing sense, my character completely drives the plot. I structure events around him and his reactions, and he is the driving force for events. In a more realistic sense in the actual fiction, I would say I prefer when the characters are allowed by the story to drive. Life doesn't always let you sit in the front seat, so sometimes a story can just be a nonstop ride of nonsense the characters aren't allowed to get off of.

So, there you go! As usual, I rambled a lot about things that probably don't have any relation to what you really asked, eventually fell short at the end because I got distracted, and now I'm lampshading it! I hope it helped! :twilightsheepish:
