Question of the Week#14 · 5:13pm Jul 2nd, 2021
Hello everyone, I hope you're all having a wonderful week. I have a 4 day weekend, so I'm excited. Well, here is the question of the week.
So I was wondering, how many of you actually enjoy my stories that involve tentacles?
As many of you know I have written a few stories where tentacles were involved such as: Ask Roseate Grimsbane, the Witch, Ghastly Mistakes = Ghostly Soulmates and to a small extent Dream Vacation.
Now seeing this, I'm sure many of you have scratched your heads and said, is this guy obsessed, to which I answer... sort of.
Growing up, we didn't have cable, the internet was dial up (and very limited) and satellite television didn't exist. Therefore, my source of entertainment as a child consisted of books, antenna tv and VHS tapes from Blockbuster (yes, I'm that old) and the library. So naturally I read books about underwater creatures and watched old movies about aliens Not the Xenomorph aliens, more like: War of the Worlds, the Day the Earth stood Still, It Came From Outspace, you know all the old good alien movies. So naturally it wasn't long before I came across H.P. Lovecraft's work and while I don't necessarily agree with all of his ideas/beliefs, I did love the designs of his monsters.
One of the other things I enjoyed about those old movies was that some of them didn't always have the aliens as evil creatures seeking to end all humanity, sure there was some of that, but there were also more than a few that had them as merely misunderstood beings that were just trying to survive.
Also when I was growing up we'd occasionally go on vacation down to Oregon to hang out with my aunt. Then there were times that we'd go to the beach and play in the tidal pools. Have you ever seen sea anemones in a tidal pool? They are very interesting and despite what you might think, there tentacles aren't that poisonous, at least not for us humans. There were green ones, pink ones and even purple ones.
So if I had to trace my fascination back to anything it had to be my love for sea creatures with tentacles, old timey aliens and H.P. Lovecraft.
Well, I guess that's it for now. I hope you all found this blog interesting and I hope you have a good day.
To be honest, I had to go back and recollect the stories to realize that tentacles were a part of them.
You use the tentacles as a logical and natural part of the characters/creatures. Therefore a scene is about characters interacting, not “that bit with the tentacles.”
Keep doing what you are doing.
Huh, that actually explains a few things. I on the other hand am just weird.
But to answer your question, I don’t mind it. As Airy said, you use ‘em as a logical part of whatever creature, not as “why? cuz tentacles lulz”. If you wanna write stories with tentacles, do so.
