I’ve noticed a sudden increase in stories about humans becoming the rulers of a certain Displaced Empire made of a certain type of profitable material, and I’m so happy! It’s no secret that SMOTE takes inspiration from stories like, 1,000 Virgin Mares, 1 Frikin' Badass Dark Overlord, Infinite Facehoofing, Hail to the King, and I Am Going To Save And/Or Destroy Equestria, all of which I highly recommend, and I’m glad to see a few more humans trying to fill in Sombra's horseshoes and take over. I love stories of a human becoming an emperor, king, or even president of a nation and going through the motions of leadership. What can I say, I'm a sucker for dumb humans leading small equines.

I usually try to go with recognizable characters that aren't too prevalent on Fimfic. Everybody knows Skeletor and Bizarro but there are so few fan fics about them. Everybody loves Mojo-Jojo but you'd be hard pressed to find any fics about the simian supreme. Everyone and their dog has heard of the shredder, but the living cutlery set hasn't stepped into the world of ponies too many times.
Try looking into your childhood and grabbing onto a character you really like. Odds are, this will attract some attention to your work and garner a following.

Don't worry about over saturation. All stories borrow and take from other stories, and compared to other worlds like stories about YHAY, Carabooverse, RGRE, etc, humans taking over the Empire are relatively few and far between. I could probably count the number of Empire human stories on two hands. Besides, whatever you make will be uniquely you, and may inspire a few others to try their own ideas as well.
