I heard this as 'Canterlot Cannibals' the first time and I was both relieved and disappointed to find out I'd misheard.
[Edit: No, listening to it several times I'm CERTAIN she said cannibals. And it IS in the restricted wing...]
Yeah, it's a massive mispronunciation. "Cantabile" should have four syllables. Which makes me think Twilight's at least heard of Canterlot Cannibals...
I just can't abile mispronunciations. :V

Or she said exactly what she meant. It's entirely plausible that they keep records of city's most heinous crimes locked away in the restricted wing of the library, and that Twilight would be interested in such historically relevant information. Just. You know. Not fitting in with the tone of the show.
Adagio cantabile, with a rock-tempo feel

True, though that hasn't stopped creators from sneaking in adult humor in kids shows before.

Seems like a reach and an attempt to darken what was is and always will and should be something not dark people like to do because of the darkness in their own souls liking to dirty things.

*looks around* What are you doing here of all places?
More seriously, when writing or creating headcanon, bringing in darker elements doesn't always make the setting a worse place. It can instead make the idealism shine brighter when there's something to struggle against.
Also there's just humor in ironic juxtaposition. But really, this is already a setting where the goddesses of the sun and moon have been repeatedly overpowered by evil forces and a resurgence of the racism that remains lurking in pony society could literally end the world. Taken seriously, My Little Pony is plenty dark. And it's also still very hopeful. I think that's awesome.

Yes. Bringing in worse elements doesn't make the setting worse. That makes sense. Just like the scarcity argument for good you just made which, if taken to it's logical conclusion, would make a setting like Warhammer 40K logically a better one than even most fannon which is laughable even for a more mild interpretation of that setting.
Keep canonical equestria good and pure and wholesome in your mind and don't let your fannon, especially not your dark fannon, pervert it. I know this is funny coming from Mr. Incest, but unlike a lot of fannoniers, I don't seriously think any of the ponies are into any of the dark, twisted things I'm into or that their setting is even all that familiar with them or at all. In fact, the reason the show drew me in was precisely because it was obviously good and pure and wholesome and free from the darkness plaguing fannon and my own warped mind.
That's all I have to say on the matter.
Though I will add calling Celestia and Luna goddesses is an insult both to them as they balk at being so overestimated and to other entities that have far more right to be called that.
Like this guy, here!

That was well put.

I watched/read Watership Down at an early age and became obsessed with reading about cute creatures overcome adversity and suffering. And that's how I have been, ever since.

Yeah, see, the problem there is that MLP: Friendship is Magic isn't really that dark tho and was never intended to be. You can have what you mentioned without it being about a bunch of backstabbing rats literally eating each other when the chips are down, difficult as it may be for your writing niche and for you as a fallen human being to really grok.
Another issue is that the main drive of Friendship is Magic, what sucked people in primarily, is that the setting and characters and plot and conflicts were inviting. INVITING. As in, you wanted to be there and it wanted you to be there.
Almost like, gee, it was a bright and colorful little girl's TV show that actually had somewhat of something resembling actual effort placed into it that made you feel better after watching it and reminded you of childhood nostalgia something fierce.

That, for all the faults you're focusing in on and trying to exacerbate, was still two steps from heaven and a place you not only wanted to visit but stay and even raise a family in relative safety because you knew that no matter what things would turn out okay and the defenders of the land would save the day with ponies only going somewhat cray-cray as a lasting result before getting over it and returning to the status quo of friendship and harmony.
And that is the essence and heart of the show. Not darkness. Not grimdarkness. The show's unapologetic welcoming and positive and upbeat attitude, atmosphere, and environment.
Put another way, not naming characters Tom or 90's Anti-Hero-With-Blood-In-The-Name-Number-Eleventy-Billion-The-Next-Generation. Naming them Pinkie Pie or Fizzy Bubbly. Why else do you think for the longest time Pinkie Pie was the only one of the mane six really getting any exposure as a mascot for the series? Because she best represents what the series is all about at its best. Dirty dark fics about her and Pinkamena and fanon about them aside.
Also, here's another character doing something that gives them more of a right to be called a god in or out of universe than total jobbers like Celestia and Luna:

I have to admit, I TL;DR'd this.
Listen: Take in the pony content you're interested in, and ignore the rest. Me, I go dark, and I see dark in the show, because I'm a dark person. I don't think you're going to like me. Go. Have fun. There's plenty of sweet stuff on the site.
