Conversion Therapy Is Somehow Still Legal In Most US States.

Not to be a downer, but this has been on my mind again. Judges have even defended it on a ‘free speech’ basis.

Which is rubbish. I had opportunity to research it a bit while getting my degree, and... dude. There are no words. It’s torture, and oft performed on children. But the fact that it is still a thing at all is both amazing and appalling.

Obviously we need to get rid of this everywhere. But, to use an analogy, trying to do so immediately would be the equivalent of redecorating your house while it's on fire. The root of American government is fundamentally broken. Once the voices of the people - not the corporations - can be heard, and the insane, fascist block that the Republican Party has now become is reduced to the annals of history, only then can true, meaningful progress be made.

Edit: Conversion therapy should never have been a thing in the first place, much like other LGTBQ-related horrors, such as trans panic actually being an acceptable legal defense for murder.

Judges have defended all kinds of heinous things by stretching the meaning "free speech" beyond any reasonable limit. They've basically excused financial corruption in electioneering under the same excuse, for instance.

I get what you’re saying, though I do disagree with you on one aspect.

I don’t think it’s so much like redecorating while the house is on fire, as it is like having a small child choking to death while the house is on fire. Both are important, and you have to figure out how to divide your attention so that suffering and death are minimized. And you may need to improv a bit while trying to tackle both problems (or, in the case of injustice in the US, the variety of problems).

It will likely take several generations to turn the US into a fully functional democracy, if then. And while working on that does need immediate attention, people are also being tortured, scarred, and even killing themselves due in part to trauma incurred from this so-called therapy right now.
