And another one down! · 8:39pm Apr 7th, 2020
Oh hey! Finished up The Good, the Bad, and the Sentry. Which ... despite having a rather low view count, has popped up (however briefly) in the Featured Box? And it's in the lower-three slots which means that it got featured BEFORE, somehow? Guess y'all were just reading the story when I wasn't looking, I guess?
Anyway! The story's done-- turned out to be a bit shorter than some of the other entries, but it's also a more straightforward kinda tale. I dunno if I quite got the 'western' bit down right, but I at least was able to vaguely link it to the show, so ... continuity, yes?
Still, not bad for something that was initially inspired by listening to Enico Morricone soundtracks and drinkin' beers.
Still, I had to push myself to finish the story-- partially 'cause I feel like I'm terrible at endings, and partially 'cause, well ... *hand gestures*. It's funny, though, as I'm in a position where I've got all the time I could ever want to write ... but at the same time it feels kinda pointless? Liiiiike, sure, I could finally hammer out some kind of fun sci-fi/fantasy adventure, and then look into submitting it to a publishing company or trying publishing it on Kindle Unlimited. But on the other hand, it's hard to sit down in front of the keyboard when it feels like the world's collapsing outside. I'm lucky enough that I'll most likely be fine-- years of watching too many zombie movies are finally paying off in the form of a well-stocked pantry. But I know other folks aren't so fortunate, so it's a weird balance of "well, people are gonna need cheap, escapist entertainment" vs. "nobody will actually have money to buy your book."
Which, well, is a rather mercenary way of looking at things, sure. Which comes down to "who are you writing for?" Which ... by now, I guess I'm just writing for myself? Distraction, hone my craft, whatever. At which point it's an easy step to go "hey, might as well write some silly pony fanfic," and ... here we are.
Funnily enough, as I type all that out, I don't have any pressing ideas for pony stories banging around in my head. Even though a couple beers and the right song on the radio could change that rather quickly. I even gave vague thought to taking suggestions-- or even commissions, perhaps? But that just feels like monetizing a hobby I've been doing just for art's sake-- or at least for the sake of cheesy horse jokes. That, and I don't want to wind up writing somebody's weirdo Trixie clopfic prompts. (Unless there's, like, a lot of money in there. Like, 'oh, look at all those zeroes' kinda money. And even then it's not gonna be canon with my other stories).
Anyway! Mostly thinking aloud, here. Or thinking on-text. Whatever. Hopefully, with the The Good, the Bad, & the Sentry finished, I can move onto something else without too much trouble. Call the fanfic a warm up or something, y'know?
But yeah. Hope the rest of you lot are doing ok. Wash your hands.
Stay home.
Read fanfics.
We should do a silly collab
Actually, I was planning to read the thing after you finish, which you did, now going to read the thing
Dunno how many are thinking of waiting until you finish before they started reading, so that may or may not be a thing
Woo! I fully support another Flash Sentry story! On the kindle it goes to be read!

Ditto. And now I've read it, and I can tell you that I enjoyed it.
When you write for yourself, then if others don't care for it, at least you'll still be happy with it. Granted, that's an easier pill to swallow for fan fiction than for a commercial venture.
