A Seasonal Reminder About the Magic of Friendship · 5:57am Oct 28th, 2019
Every year:
On my Hallowe'en radio program, I try to squeeze in Steeleye Span's version of "King Henry"—Child Ballad #32 for those of you who have your copies of that collection near at hand. But this year for the first time it occurred to me how well the song illustrates the magic of friendship.
Or, y'know, something like friendship...

Steeleye Span, a very good idea. :)

When I first:
Heard them on the radio back in the pre-internet days, I thought the show's host said "Steel Ice Band." So I spent several years fruitlessly searching for any of their records...

Many years ago I was dragged to a Sha-Na-Na (Retro 50's band) concert at the Filmore by my then girlfriend. For whatever bizarre reason, Steeleye Span opened for them. First time I ever saw an opening act called back for two encores!
Confirmed my dislike for 50's music, but made me a life-long Steeleye Span fan!

Oh, I'm familiar:
With Sha-Na-Na. They had a half-hour syndicated TV show back in the late 70s, and my dad was a huge fan. I still have somewhere a 6 hour VCR tape I recorded for him, though I don't think he's ever watched it. And of course, the group played at Woodstock.
I actually do a whole show of doo-wop music every Easter Sunday, and I have a friend who says he can't listen to it 'cause the music gives him gallstones...

Oh great, more awesome music to binge that will preclude sharing my spotify recommendations with anyone.
