[THE LIST] We're back, baby! · 5:35pm Jun 25th, 2019
This list is not about my favorite stories of all time. That's my favorites list and one of these days I may get around to writing reviews of those fics.
The List is about stand-out, in-progress works that deserve more love, for whatever reason. In addition to general reviews of the fics, these blog posts will tell why I picked a particular story and highlight any features the reader should look out for. Spoilers will be appropriately marked, so you'll be able to read my reviews with confidence that you'll be able to read the story itself and experience the same surprise and delight I did when I first found it.
Also, authors and fans of works will be able to submit stories. Your particular selection may not make it onto the list, and the more information you give me for why you think it should be featured, the more likely I'll be to read and post it. To submit a fiction, simply PM me through FiMFiction's link on my profile.
The list can be found here: Princess Columbia's List
Premise
As we all know, certain people have mirror opposites on each side of the dimensional mirror that now resides in Twilight Sparkle's castle. Not everyone, certainly, but a large enough number to make it a non-trivial amount. Events have clearly become mirrored as well, resulting in very, very similar circumstances (for all the worlds are different). What if Sunset Shimmer's human counterpart had done her homework and left the human world in as much of a snit as her pony counterpart did...and the two wound up practically taking each other's places? They're still different beings with different motives and backgrounds, so what would happen?
This fic looks to tell that story.
Princess Columbia's Synopsis
A mostly extremely well done look at how a human Sunset Shimmer would adapt to life in Equestria and the consequences of her actions as well as dealing with the fallout of the Pony Sunset's actions. There is a point late in the currently published chapters (as of the time of this writing) where a time-skip is used, and it's jarring and feels like the author just didn't know what else to do to get from point A to point B in their story.
Why am I highlighting this fic?
We all want to know about Sunset Shimmer's human counterpart, and this fic happens to be one of the better managed attempts to answer that question. It has the benefit of being totally and completely A/U, so the author doesn't need to worry about what might happen with canon human-Sunset, should DHX ever grace us with an answer on that.
What makes this fic particularly good?
It doesn't follow the same fairly tired pattern as other entries in the fandom. It's not a perfect mirror match to pony-Sunset's journey, human-Sunset doesn't deus-ex her way to being the Element of Magic or some other flank-pull, it's genuinely treating this version of Sunset as her own character with her own story.
Who would like this fic?
SunShim fans and people who genuinely love a good A/U.
Does the author monetize?2
Yes! You can throw money at them through their Patreon!
- Endorsement on Princess Columbia's List is an endorsement of the selected work of fiction only and is not intended to endorse the creator of the work in any other way.
- Why highlight whether the author monetizes their work? By providing renumeration to the author, you often get the opportunity to request certain works be given higher priority. Additionally, when a person is able to get paid for their passion on their terms, it can often allow them to cut out things that otherwise distract from said passion, like a day job. ... Huh. I legitimately did not realize that story was over until now. Though I suppose if Starswirl isn't updating something, it's a good indication that they don't plan on saying anything more. They're crazy reliable in that regard.
But yeah, good fic that takes human Sunset in a wonderfully novel direction. Though as I noted, it stops rather than ends... though I may want to see if they're willing to write more for the right incentive. Hmm.
