My sister's landlord tried to call the cops on me · 3:39am Jun 7th, 2019
So, a few months ago I moved out of my sister's house. My sister has a stable job with very good hours and very good pay, but the house she was living in cost about $1200 a month plus utility bills. It was easily affordable for her, but for the sake of saving money, she decided to move out.
We live in a small town in Texas, somewhere in the panhandle. Every day she drives out to Dalhart for two hours to work a 12-hour shift. Keep in mind, she works the night shift. Usually, she gets two days off a week, but for the last two weeks, she has been working every day.
Moving out has taken a toll on her. She's been very stressed and getting very little sleep. Therefore, she asked me to help her move her stuff out.
We ran into several issues, one of them being that she's hardly available since I work during the day. Since she typically doesn't get up until 3 or 4, that would give her only an hour of free time because she leaves the house by 4:40 PM. Knowing what she was going through, I couldn't just ask her to wake up early.
Somehow, though, we managed to get most of the stuff out. I don't really have a car, so it's not like I could have done anything about it. I live right down the street from her, so I could make multiple trips since some of it was my stuff from when I lived there. Although, a normal walk would take 30 minutes carrying something heavy.
I managed to clean two of the bedrooms -- swept them and everything. I threw a whole bunch of things away, some of this being kitchen supplies my sister asked me to trash because she didn't have time to throw everything in a box and take to storage.
Come the last day before the eviction fully kicks in, it was my day off, and I spent the whole day on the house. I got some of it clean, however, night feel, and without power, I couldn't see what I was doing. The landlord didn't want her keys until 1 PM, so I got up extra early the next day and continued my work. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough.
I actually got most of it. All I didn't' get was some trash in a bathroom and in her bedroom. I also didn't have time to sweep the garage (Ransacked by dirty clothes and dog poop, should have made that a priority to clean first.).
I thought nothing of the trash in the bedrooms. Aarons was coming the next day to pick up the furniture. Putting two and two together, I could finish the garage the next day and take out the rest of the trash for them, seeing how there would need to be somebody there to let them in (I still had a key, although I'm pretty sure the landlord himself could have done the same thing.).
Load and behold, then blow that load onto Satan's retarded son... I didn't get the chance to.
Let's start with this: I was at work, got a text from my sister. What do I read?
Did you not get your stuff or finish cleaning?
Landlord is pissed and he's going to call the cops on me.
I I left some things in a closet because I didn't have time to bring it home.
If you get fined I'll help you whatever way I can
(Legally, she couldn't get fined. Turns out the landlord halfassed the eviction and didn't go through all the legal requirements.)
I think landlord is throwing it all away if we don't get it today or tomorrow
At this point, I'm at work and am unable to do anything about it, so I'm freaking out. I calm down when I saw that we had another day. Okay, that means I have time to clean everything and get all the stuff I left there. Well...
I go there the next day, and I see the landlord weeding the front yard. Uh oh, I was going to have to encounter him. All well, I could tell him, "Hey, I'm here to pick up the last of that stuff and help you clean." Seems like a fair trade. Help him with the thing I was already planning to do. That thing he gave us an extra day to do.
Well, I walk up to him, he sees me coming, and just as I'm taking that first step onto the lawn, he says, "Don't come any closer."
I stepped back onto the sidewalk, but by then he was already pulling his phone out. "Stay there," he said. "I'm going to call the cops."
I tried to explain to him that I was there to pick up the stuff and help him clean, but he still refused to listen.
Eventually, though, he said, "I called the cops yesterday, and they told me to call them again if anyone steps on this property."
This was my saving grace. I said, "Sir, I wasn't informed of any of this."
That's when things clicked together for him. He knew I was a past tenant, but that I moved out long before the start of the eviction process. Therefore, the police couldn't have come to my door because the lease wasn't under my name. So he told me I to leave right away.
I'm not going to pretend laziness wasn't involved or that I didn't procrastinate. But Jesus... this guy was livid.
Here's a lesson for you all: respect your landlord's property. Even if he knew of my sister's situation, you can still make a lot of progress in 30 days. Knowing I fucked up somewhere, I also can't help but calling the landlord and asshole. He was absolutely determined on calling the cops on me. For the entire first month that I lived in that house, he kept driving by to check on things. He clearly didn't trust us since we're kids.
Nonetheless, I don't harbor hatred. As scary of a situation as that was, as shaken as it had me afterward, as much as an asshole that guy was, I was still willing to keep things civil. I responded to everything he said with "Sir," and remained a respectful distance. He was still keen on calling the cops even though I was complying, but I can't blame him for it. I mean, if you actually saw that garage...
To say the least, respect your landlord, and take care of stuff long before it's due.
Can't wait to release the next chapter of Epidemic in a few months.
Wow, crazy.

Mao had the right idea when it came to landlords. Sorry you had to go through that.

All in the past. I actually went back to retrieve some of the stuff he chuncked. Got back a stick of deodorant and a bottle of foot powder. XD
