    Droppin' By

Hello, I was in the neighborhood and had just realized that my last blog post was a bit of a downer, given that it was around the time of my Grandma's passing and funeral. I think I oughta leave you folks with something a bit more upbeat or at least something neutral.

    And Now, A Newsletter

Huh, back in July I said I oughta talk more around here. It's now the day after Christmas and I have not, in fact, talked more around here.

So, I'll give you the rundown on what I've been up to since then. Warning, it gets a little long in talking about last summer's vacation and about a new fixation I have.

Thoughts on Season 6 Episodes · 4:01am Apr 6th, 2019

No one expected the hiatus between Seasons 5 and 6 to be so short, but it was. So, after the divisive finale that made the infamous Starlight Glimmer a regular character, how was Season 6 going to handle the change in status quo? Well, we'll see what I personally thought of it.

The Crystalling
~ Have I ever mentioned just how stupid I think Flurry Heart's name is? Why did anyone think that was a good name? In other Baby Princess news, part of me thinks it'd have been really funny if she came out a pegasus instead of an alicorn. Wouldn't that be something. :trollestia:

Other than that... eh, it's all right. The best parts were the Sunburst and Starlight scenes. So delightfully awkward.

The Gift of the Maud Pie
~ They seriously invented a random family holiday just to have this plot. :ajbemused: And if we just had to put up with this stupid forced setup... why couldn't we have an episode dealing with Pinkie's relationship with either Limestone or Marble? Those are things that are worth exploring, given Limey's grouchiness and Marble's shyness and how Pinkie could deal with either of those, but why go the interesting route when we could have Pinkie get over-the-top obsessive and melodramatic over something to do with Maud--again (here), and again (Rock Solid Friendship), and again (The Maud Couple)? This sibling relationship is so one-dimensional that a straight line has more depth.

Only things worth noting are Rarity growing her franchise, and apparently, Maud essentially confirmed that it is possible for a sibling of a party pony to do some weird party pony things (because repressed semi-party pony-ness has been a thing for Tomato Sandwich since the early days of his ask blog).

On Your Marks
~ This episode is so forgettable. Only thing I really remember is how I liked Apple Bloom and Tender Taps' interaction.

Gauntlet of Fire
~ Finally, dragons are cool again! And we have a Spike episode that's nearly universally praised! :yay:

However, I didn't really care much for Ember. She's just a textbook tsundere and rebellious princess with nothing else that's all that interesting. I found her father more interesting (mainly because I think he's funny).

No Second Prances
~ Well, this episode is a... mess. This thing contains several controversies, yikes.

But, skirting away from the controversies, here's a thing that really bugged me when this episode first aired. The moment that Trixie lamented about losing her first friend, I just groaned. Yet again, the problem with a character is that they don't have friendship in their lives and thus they're bad/miserable and the only way to solve their problem is with friendship. There comes a point where seeing and hearing that over and over like it's the gospel gets annoying, and here is where it got annoying for me.

Newbie Dash
~ I'm a weirdo for not being offended by this episode--I was picked on in school and by my own brother, but I didn't find this episode the worst thing ever. I caught on pretty early that it was just a team thing to call each other by nicknames based on a goof-up and just waited for the moment where Rainbow learned it. My negative reactions can just be summed up by my cringing at Rainbow's impersonations of her friends and facepalming at Rainbow's attempt to highjack the show and screwing up. And maybe a bit of disappointment at this being the episode where Rainbow officially becomes a Wonderbolt.

So, basically... I'm just over here, like, "Meh. I've seen worse."

A Hearth's Warming Tail
~ Welp, a straight-up Christmas Carol plot. That's a musical. But hey, it's a musical I like alongside Pinkie Pride, and seeing Starlight Glimmer as a villain again (even if it was just her filling in for Scrooge-Grinch pony) was wonderful. The most memorable song for me was Luna's Future, because it's so chilling (not just because of the snow falling, haha).

Though I was annoyed that this dang episode aired in May!

The Saddle Row Review
~ Good golly gosh, this episode was way too much fun. I got a kick out of that interview format and how much it enhanced the story of how the opening almost went wrong. I especially liked Pinkie with the shoulder Rarities, and I admit, I found the spoon clothes thing funny only because I had Cheese Sandwich wear spoon gloves in a scene in one of my fics.

And now, J. Jonah Jameson pony makes me want to see Spider-Pony.

Applejack's 'Day' Off
~ This episode is just a bunch of nothing.

Flutter Brutter
~ I have this blog that sums things up.

I still want to write a thing where Zephyr meets Tomato, and Tommy has to keep himself from throttling Zephyr.

Spice Up Your Life
~ This episode made me hungry. Heck, I'm getting hungry just thinking about the episode. Heh, fun stuff. ^^

Can someone tell Zesty Gourmand that a 'subtle taste' is not what good food makes? Sheesh, she makes me, the Mistress of Pickiness, look like an adventurous eater, and that makes a terrible food critic.

Stranger Than Fan Fiction
~ So, I've mentioned before that this is my second favorite episode, thanks to how much it pokes fun at fandoms without getting too mean-spirited, how much fun it just has with making fun of cliches, the amazing chemistry between Rainbow Dash and Quibble Pants (so much so that I've shipped them almost as hard as CheesePie; but alas, I'm bracing myself for disappointment thanks to a coming Season 9 episode), and was just overall fun to watch, especially when Quibble realizes, "Oh, crap, this is all real!". Hands down, this is the best Season 6 episode, and Quibble Pants is one of my favorite guest ponies (kind of reminds me of my sister Artsy Notes, who can be very critical, especially when we're talking about TV shows).

The Cart Before the Ponies
~ The Derby Racers song is the only thing I really liked about this episode. That, and the idea for how my OC Olive got her cutie mark.

28 Pranks Later
~ Well... the beginning was iffy because Rainbow should really know better than to spook Fluttershy like that (and even if you can argue that Rainbow had faith in Fluttershy's growth, I still had problems with how Pinkie didn't have a problem with the prank and just rattled on about how fun it was getting scared--when in Griffon the Brush Off she was clear that pranking Fluttershy is a no-no). And Rainbow's pranks were increasingly getting meaner.

But I had too much fun with the cookie zombie apocalypse, so sue me.

The Times They Are a Changeling
~ This episode is kind of boring. Thorax is cute and all, but he's pretty bland. Spike's song was one of the cringiest songs in the show, and I just shrivel up like a raisin every time I hear it. Finally, it was jarring how quickly the ponies turned from having understandable hostility toward changelings to just accepting him and letting him see baby Flurry Heart up close--especially Shining Armor, who was the most hostile with good reason.

It kind of bugs me to see this episode taking a complicated real life problem and just solving it quickly with a song and wrapping it up with a nice little bow. So... it's not one of my favorites. Pretty far from it.

Dungeons & Discords
~ I wanted more time in the full-on Ogres and Oubliettes world. The rest of the episode is just okay.

Buckball Season
~ How the crap did they make Snails into a great character after him being just a token idiot boy for so long?

Otherwise, it's another episode that's... just okay. It had fun moments, but it wasn't anything too spectacular.

The Fault in Our Cutie Marks
~ Okay, Gabby's adorable, she makes this episode.

Viva Las Pegasus
~ And here's where that long standing debate of whether it was an analogue for Vegas or L.A. I still think the pun works better for L.A., given the syllables, imagery of a winged version of the dominant species... seriously, make up a better pun for Vegas!

I have no clue how Gladmane got away with those manipulations as long as he did; some actual communication between each friend group would have made those flimsy lies fall apart fairly quickly. And while I'm glad they didn't reform the Flim Flam Brothers, I wish this was the last we had seen of them.

Every Little Thing She Does
~ We can debate over Starlight's portrayal here all we want... but just try to convince me that this episode isn't hilarious.

P.P.O.V. (Pony Point of View)
~ A bunch of funny perspectives all tied together with the most out of nowhere plot twist I've ever seen. I guess it's okay.

Where the Apple Lies
~ Well, that escalated to something I didn't quite expect. Also, the timeline is already confusing enough, you mean to tell me that the Apple parents' death isn't the reason for AJ's soul-searching city adventure and that was just random? Because with Filthy Rich and Spoiled Milk being engaged here, that implies no Diamond Tiara, thus no Apple Bloom, thus, Apple parents are alive. So why were they discussing inheritance if Granny Smith wasn't about to die anytime soon and nopony knew that their parents' days were numbered? My head hurts trying to jump through the hoops.

Top Bolt
~ What do you mean Sky Stinger and Vapor Trail aren't a couple? They're the main this I remember, honestly.

Also, five kids making a big family? :rainbowlaugh: Pfft, maybe for you, but where I'm from, that's small potatoes compared to families of seven and eight and even ten both within my neighborhood and my own extended family. My immediate family of four kids feels puny in comparison!

To Where and Back Again
I reacted to it a while back when it aired.

Nowadays, having had a couple of years to think it over a little more, comparing it with other finales... it's frankly just okay. Nothing terrible, but it pales in comparison to most of the other finales in my opinion.

Yeah, I will admit, I actually find Season Six pretty dull. It had it's highlights and a couple of my favorite episodes, but it wasn't as fun as I found Season Four or most of the other seasons. Part if it was just that Starlight Glimmer really dragged down the episodes she had a role in, since she wasn't a fun character unless she was playing the villain. There were also a couple of instances of the show biting off more than it can chew, or having some of the lamest cop outs. And if I'm being honest, in my thoughts this season ends up getting blended in with Season 7, and I forget which ones are S6 episodes.

It's overall one of the more boring seasons for me.

I already wrote down thoughts on each episode of Seasons 7 and 8, so I'm done here. I might have a blog linking the thoughts, but I can say that I've now said my things on each episode of Friendship is Magic. Don't know if I'll do a thing for Equestria Girls, but I'm tired, S9 premieres tomorrow, and I am ready. From what I've seen of the previews, the premiere looks exciting.

So, current personal season rankings:

2. 5
3. 2

I personally Like Spike's Song in Times are changing but you're entitled to your opinon

I don’t get your rating system. I wouldn’t mind if you explained it.

For the most part, I agree, I forgot Top Bolt existed before reading this blog though.

One thing we disagree on: I think Dungeons and Discord is one of the best episodes in the series. I thought it was hilarious, and D&D existing makes a lot of things better.

I don't really have a rating system, I'm just ranking the Seasons by my personal feelings on them, being that if I was entertained, engaged in the conflict, and if any problems any episodes had were distracting. While my thoughts do often contain my criticisms, I'm not exactly here to be a formal critic; I just wanted to give my opinion and then move on.

Oh, wait, I think I get what you mean now. I swear, my interpretations of what other people say get wacky. :applejackconfused:

It means that I rank Season 4 as my favorite, Season 8 as my least favorite, and you can figure out the rest.
