Why do you Read/ Write Romance? · 5:30pm Mar 8th, 2019

Eyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

Whilst I was having yet another caffeine high, I was curious about why others read and/or write romance stories as an interesting discussion question. And despite me wanting to hear what others have to say, I didn't consider my own words. It would only seem fair to do the same. So I will answer both.

Why I read romance: To be completely honest, I don't do as much reading compared to writing. In fact, I've had friends PM me on Discord and ask me to glance over their little creations and give feedback and critique. Regardless, I have stumbled onto a few romance stories myself.

When I read romance, I want to feel that nostalgia of that tingling I got when I saw that girl I liked. I will admit I was a bit of a hopeless romantic, not so much anymore; I was also someone who had a hard time fitting in. In my youth, I understood that feeling welcome is such an uplifting feeling. I always gave people positive compliments when I saw what they did, including teachers. Heck, my mother who is a teacher works in the same school district and has old teachers I've had tell their students stories about me. That's the same with me when it comes to romance. I have had my sights on a few girls and had even fewer success with giving that romantic speech of "here is why I like you." Now, give me some credit when I say I won't drown a person I love with compliments. At the same time, when they are at their lowest point, I hope to be there for them.

Why I write romance: In conjunction with the previous paragraph, I feed on that nostalgia of loves gone by. But it goes much deeper than that. Writing always involves a challenge in every story I start, including the daunting task of finishing it. As to writing romance, it's a matter of replicating that feeling; that rush of personal experience I've dealt with. I don't think I've started a story with two characters in love at the start because I feel there needs to be a beginning of having two characters meet, the middle of their friendship and their growth, and the eventual confession of a character's love for another. I like to write that natural progression toward that end-goal.

I know there is much more to my motivation for both reading and writing. This is the gest of what I have to say (also because I have things to do and I need to post this blog D:).

What about yourself? What draws you to this genre if you read or write it?

Otherwise, freak, out.

Oh, I like it because of the same reasons you listed.
However there are others too - a rather wide spectrum of interests for example (I read Berserk after starting with Mlp)

It's just sweet, especially the tragedies.

5024970 Just because you read soft, cute things doesn't mean you can't enjoy violent ones too. I mean, tragedy is another beast I like, especially when the story keeps you guessing on who will survive in the end.

Nah, the context makes it hilarious.
You like what you like and you don't like what you don't like.
Simple.

You should watch Princess Tutu if you haven't yet :raritywink:

I read it to live vicariously.

I write it to live vicariously through the exact stories I want to read.

It's much less stressful to let others figure out how to romance.

For starters, I like when you get your caffeine highs, you always do something productive during them. :derpytongue2:

Why do I read romance stories? I tend to focus on more action and thriller oriented stories when I write, so I try to balance that out by reading romance stories so I don’t burn myself out. Also the reasons you listed.

Why do I write romance stories? I don’t usually write romance stories, but I do have one romance idea that’s been working itself out in my head. I’ll have to see where it goes.

A pretty good one if you like it's style.
