NaPoWriMo Report: 06/11/2018 · 10:06am Nov 6th, 2018

Yeah, I use British dates. Haven't you figured out my nationality by now? :trollestia:

Blog Number 46: "Baby, You're A Firework!" Edition

Current NaPoWriMo Word Count: 23,065 words.

Five days have passed with a lot of heart-attack-inducing fireworks (for the record: I like fireworks, honestly I do... just not up close). I think it's safe to say I met my target of 10,000 words, so I could easily stop right now and cruise through the rest of the month. But where's the fun in that?

I have astonished myself by producing so much, though now the surprise has worn off, I think it's not too remarkable once you look for plausible explanations:

  1. The first is that, with an official event and a clear set of targets to choose among (my own 10k, the standard 50k, the list of targets present in the original Equestria Daily announcement, et cetera), I'm not wandering the wilds; I have a tangible external framework to operate in.

That's probably why I sometimes find it easier to write during contests too as opposed to trying to get myself to write the words on my own initiative. Heck, the external framework hypothesis probably explains why some people find it easier to write fanfiction than original fiction. Food for thought, maybe?

  2. The second is that lots of people get officially involved, so there's a slight competitive motivation to spice things up. (Come ooooon, everyone's thinking it... :raritywink:)
  3. The third is that it's also officially not about editing the life out of the process to please other people, which takes a lot of the pressure off.
  4. The fourth is that I spent most of October twiddling my thumbs while simultaneously researching all sorts of things in the hope of generating ideas. The psychological pressure of an entire month is probably being released now, to say nothing of the unproductive months before then.
  5. And the fifth is that the first few words are usually the toughest to write: get the ball rolling, and the actual pleasure manifests itself soon enough, which makes me that much more willing to go the extra mile.

Good grief, but I definitely enjoy writing a lot more now than I have done in a long time; for instance, yesterday, I went on a pleasant walk around and about in the nearby park, and the ideas just poured in so fast it was all I could do to keep up. Thank goodness I never go anywhere without pen and pocket notebook, and even then I tackled it first thing when I came back home. I struck mental gold! Now that is what it's all about! :yay:

So, in brief: deeply happy with my progress so far, and with how much fun this is proving to be! Hoping like heck it keeps it up for the next twenty-five days too.

(By the way, I have noticed reviews and comments recently. I'm not ignoring them. It's just I really, really have no idea how to respond to a lot of it. But I do appreciate them all, I swear! I really do.)

That's enough for now, I think. Impossible Numbers, out.

"British dates" You mean least-to-most significant figure dates? The ones most of the world uses? The ones that are standard in computing and web-formats?

Good to hear things are going well (so far as writing goes).

Remember, this place is majority American. One must not confuse the natives. :trollestia:

Thank you for the comment. I hope my good luck continues.

Huzzah! Congratulations on the rousing start to your month. I hope your success continues!

Weirdly enough, if I recall correctly (I probably don't), we're not natives so much as FiMfic is an enclave or embassy type deal. Hosted in UK, majority population American
