Thoughts on "Sounds of Silence" · 12:57am Oct 5th, 2018
Heh, here's the episode I got to watch at the convention!
My thoughts on seeing the Kirin for the first time: "Gosh darn it, it's an entire town of Mauds."
Okay, so I will say that I did generally like the episode. Autumn Blaze is a fun character, her song was fun (especially the Phantom of the Opera part, holy cow), I certainly relate to the conflict of not wanting to say anything in fear of saying just the wrong thing that sets someone off, that one guy at the train station was the funniest thing I've seen all season, the Kirin's Nirik forms are freakin' awesome, the moment the Kirin attempted to dump our heroines in the stream was pretty tense, and it's nice to see Applejack and Fluttershy team up again.
However... does anyone get the sense that it's incomplete? I know you can only fit so much in 22 minutes, but it feels like there was something missing. Was it how fast the Kirin were convinced that the Stream of Silence thing was a bad idea? Was it how it felt like the moral was less shown and more told? Was it the abrupt ending? Did we need more of Autumn Blaze? I don't know, something about this episode feels like there could have been more done.
Regardless, I still enjoy what this episode has.
This was a very densely packed episode... aside from the awkward silences and Applejack being the worst kind of tourist. But other than those bits, this episode had a lot of world building and not a lot of time. I'm not surprised that it ended up feeling a bit cramped.
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
