Midnight Rising update; Feathered Hearts C&C teaser...

Hey, folks. Here’s my weekly writing update. I’m tagging this as C&C since that’s what the teaser below is about, but the blog is about both it and Unleash the Magic - Midnight Rising.

Prereader verdict on new Midnight Rising chapter is in...

And unfortunately, that verdict is unanimous:

Complaints were: too meta, hard to follow, does nothing to advance the plot, and potentially makes things worse while trying to fix them.

Still waiting on Midnight Rising prereads...

Which are particularly important this time, because the first preread I got back was negative. As it came from AJ_Aficionado, whose opinions I particularly value mostly because he’s more interested in the story than the sex, I tend to give what he said about it credence but still want to hear from everyone else before I start making changes to the new chapter.

Mind changed on removing the griffon arc from Midnight Rising + teaser

After receiving pleas from multiple readers to keep the Enter the Griffon chapters in place, I have decided to do so and go with my original plan, which was to simply offer new readers the chance

    One final thing...

I have been advised by no less an authority than CHS acting Vice-Principal Ms. Cheerilee to use the upcoming Midnight Rising chapter as strictly a recap to relaunch the story, and not get into Lemon Zest until the following chapter, when I can devote a full entry to it without any split in focus. No, really. She did. You’ll see what I mean when the chapter launches, but basically, I’m

Turnabout Storm - Parts 26 and 27 updated and... · 2:40pm May 14th, 2018

The T-Rated version of The Lawyer and The Unicorn has been released. Nine chapters are now posted, and I plan to release one new chapter a day from here on out.

Interestingly, the release has generated new readers for the original Turnabout Storm and TLaTU. Not complaining! In addition, in response to a suggestion on an earlier blog, I changed the cover art for the M-rated version of TLaTU to something similar yet slightly (and appropriately) different:

Photoshop is a wonderful thing.

As for Part 26 - Where it All Begins and Part 27 - A New Plan of Turnabout Storm, Part 26 has been smoothed out and I put a bit more conversation in between Twilight and Celly. It was noted by prereaders that this version of the Celestia was the season 1 version of her, slightly coy and mysterious rather than the more accessible (and occasionally ditzy) version we see now. I prefer her like this, to be honest. Remind me to rant about season 8 and what they've done to her another time.

Part 27, by contrast, was one of those chapters that I reread and cringed. I was way, WAY too heavy on the shipping within it, and quite frankly, to look at it now I don't think the G1 pony reference works outside of the videos. So with apologies, I've removed it. The shipping has likewise been taken a weed whacker to. Twilight still finds him in her thoughts when she doesn't wish him to be, but all the cringingly overt stuff has been removed. Hopefully it now flows a lot better and has a bit more subtlety than a sledgehammer. I also made Spike a better foil and had him point out a few things, like the fact that technically, Twilight can't fire Phoenix; only Rainbow can. Her response plugs the plot hole there.

You are invited to check out both updated chapters, as well as the new T-rated TLaTU release. Thanks again to everyone who liked it!

This reminds me that I should REALLY check out your other works at some point. Eh, I'm majoring in procrastination, I'll do it tomorrow.

I've already posted my rant about the first episode of season H8 — as in season H8tred for the audience — but I'm interested in hearing your take. I didn't post a blog on that horrible play episode but I really should have. Celestia is a cancer upon the entire thing. Her bad acting makes me want to drink bleach and throw myself off a building at the same time. It's like what do we even need this character for? She's this boring old person like some no-name Republican House Representative from a red-state with a title that no one gives a crap about. That's Celestia. But she's wearing a hoodie and trying to look relevant to the youngsters I guess.

What a stumble from grace.

Celestia was great because she was imposing. She was wise in the Jedi Master sort of way and knew about everything that was going on because of the experiences her long and interesting life offered her. There is no reason in hell they needed to change her to this doddering, ineffectual annoying old mare who needs to learn a thing or two from the younger, hotter Twilicorn. The whole narrative current flowing beneath almost all of season 8 is just terrible and I want to set fire to the whole thing.

It's like everything old is crap and everything is changing and we must accept this change because it's better. Remember the scene from that lame Sunburst episode last week? It was fast but they show the town's founders all with smashed out teeth from eating bread that was too hard. The first episode shows us an out of touch old guy who doesn't want to turn Equestria into Brazil. Season 8 is an expression of that old law of politics that any organization that isn't explicitly right-wing eventually becomes left-wing and MLPFiM is in the terminal stages of SJW cancer. /rant

Edit: We did get the Rainbow Dash/Grannie episode, but that was less about learning anything from the grannies and more about young people learning to treat old people like normal people. A fine message to be sure, but doesn't change the focus on the old passing the torch to the new.

Cool! Look forward to hearing your opinion of them. And I know about majoring in procrastination as well. On certain matters, I'm the absolute worst about it. :ajsleepy:

You know, I really do need to post my thoughts about the season eight opener and season eight in general. We've had two good-to-great episodes but the rest ranges from merely meh to utterly awful. Celly, unfortunately, is just the tip of the iceberg. Season seven was wonderful; how could the show been so quickly reduced to this?

So be it. I'll post my thoughts on the new season later on this week.

Season 5 was great. Season 6 and 7 were pretty good but they certainly had their downsides. Remember how the first half of seasons 6 and 7 were mediocre at best? The thing that has me so down in the dumps about H8 is there is a clear narrative and it's totally leftist. They hired a bunch of new writers and they're all SJWs or diversity hires. MLP is just another wing of Treudau's leftist Canadian government attempting to export Canada's love of diversity and anti-nativist, third-world fetishism to the rest of the Western World.

Lauren Faust is desperately missed. She actively stood against this sort of thing from day 1. :ajsleepy:

Whatever good episodes we come across, the chances of the quality turning around in the latter half are slim. This season is doomed.
