Moth Plays Dark Cloud 2: Chapter 1, Episode 3: Steampunk Sewer Smackdown · 3:59pm May 12th, 2018

In which Max becomes a steampunk robo pilot, the sewers become more dangerous, and treasure chests can no longer be trusted. Oh, and there's also a train.

The Ridepod is one of the more quirky and fun gameplay elements of Dark Chronicle. Both the Ridepod and Monica's Monster Transformation open up your gameplay options in dungeons, which is how this game compensates for only giving you two playable characters (as opposed to the HERD of them the first game had). Steve is a fully customizable ride armor, upgradable throughout the game. The best upgrades for Steve have to be invented using the Photo Invent system, and naturally can't be invented until late in the game. By the final dungeon, if you've been doing everything correctly, Steve is a high-speed hovering tank shooting sun lasers at everything in sight!

I'm serious. Sun. Lasers.

Okay! So the most useful thing about the Photo Invent system is upgrading Steve, but it can be used for a lot of other things too--most notably, it's the only way to get the Aquarium, which you need for fish breeding.

In this episode, we encounter our first Mimics of the game. Mimics are the nastiest surprise. Regular Mimics are fast-moving, aggressive, and frequently inflict either Poison or Curse. If you're not careful, a Mimic can make your life a living hell. Fortunately, there's usually ample time to react to the discovery of a Mimic and administer an appropriate beatdown.

But then there are King Mimics.

Regular Mimics are bad enough--a normal treasure chest suddenly turns into a snarling, snapping, angry monster and comes after you. King Mimics disguise themselves as the exact same treasure chests...but then suddenly turn into a massive, roaring monster whose main attack can drop half your health in one go. King Mimics are a heart-stopping encounter, and the only saving grace is that they're slow enough that you should be able to get away before things get serious. Head-on attacks are strongly discouraged when dealing with King Mimics--it's best to circle around behind them.

In other words, deal with them the exact opposite of how I dealt with the one in this video.

Max is almost to the end of the Underground Water Channel, but there's still a nasty surprise in store for him. And his adventure is just beginning, as it seems Mayor Need has been hiding a terrible secret about the world outside Palm Brinks. What awaits Max once he sees the outside world with his own eyes?

Find out in the next episode!

What is up with Level 5's obsession with these creatures. I'm honestly surprised we didn't get them in White Knight Chronicles. Including a variety that was mech sized.

Mimics are Level-5's Tonberry--that one enemy that is either a nuisance or a menace, but you can BET you'll run into it and it will fuck up your shit at the worst possible moment.

At least the Mimics in the Dark Cloud games aren't as bad as the Mimics in Rogue Galaxy. The Mimics in Rogue Galaxy are FUCKING MINIBOSSES and WILL wreck your shit.

Haven't gotten that far in Rogue Galaxy, yet. Looking forward to it, actually.
