Brush your teeth. But more than that, floss. Or something. I just got a couple of cavities filled, and I'll be getting more fillings soon, too. They probably saved the tooth before I needed a root canal, though. So yay, I guess.
But they gave me nitrous oxide because I was so worried about the shots. Dentist shots hurt more than any other shots I've had by a mile. IVs, blood draws, doctor's shots... none come close to the dentist. But nitrous oxide is just, like, the bestest.
My mouth is still numb, and I'm a little loopy, but hey. Nitrous oxide is great stuff. Freaked my wife out, and since I was laughing sometimes, I amused the dentists enough that they almost started laughing. I'm funny even when I don't mean to be. I'm like Pinkie Pie! Punchmaster!
So there.
You think you've got it bad in that chair?
I live with my dentists. Both parents AND my older brother. Every day they remind me to brush and floss or else they'd bring me to the chair after hours and remove the cavities without Novocaine. At least the bills are cheap, though.
Interesting tidbit; Dentists don't give out next-to-nothing on Halloween, they actually hand out full bars of chocolate and packs of hard-candy. Keeps patients in the chair and gives a little extra for Christmas bonuses for the assistants! Beauty of Capitalism.
Oh you mean laughing gas. I've had that used on me for a cavity I had a couple years ago. It went well until they brought out the drill and revved it in front of me. My brain woke up and the adrenaline started to flow at the sight of a drill approaching my mouth. I was not happy. Next time I have one done I'll wear a blindfold and listen to music to take my mind off it and hope it works. Money will be the biggest issue since I have three that need to be dealt with. I'll have to brush and floss after work today. Please don't cry baby Colgate.
Only had one injection to remove a wisdom tooth that developed a cavity. Can’t say it was worse than any other injection. If anythng it was less so.
Never had one set in my gums tho, so not like I have a reference for that.
It depends on the patient and the medical practitioner. Regarding the latter, I'm lucky enough to have a dentist with a wonderfully soft touch. Can't feel the needle going in at all and only a very mild pinching when he's pressing the plunger. (And, yes, I have had previous dentists to compare against.)
Haven't been to the dentist in ages. Probably should go soon.

Well this one needed to hit the nerve, so... yeah, that hurt.

Yeah, needles in the nerves hurt like a sonuvabitch. I've spent the summer getting cavities filled thanks to not seeing a dentist for a long, long time. That, and being diabetic makes it necessary to start having regular checkups. I would like to keep my teeth. My dad's told me horror stories of getting dentures fitted.
You know, last time I went to the dentist, he was shocked at how deep my cavities were (the nerves were almost exposed), as well as the fact I didn't feel any pain, though I could still feel (when not numbed).

So do they write Halloween off as a business expense? Or an investment plan?

Yes. Very much so. Spend a few hundred dollars on candy bags so that all the parents that take their candy line up for dental work? The circle of life, my friend.
I wish I had Minuette to brush my teeth daily.....
4678337 Our dentist is very tricky. Has you lie back in the chair, and does any pre-work with the drill out of your line of sight, so the first thing you hear of the drill is a little revving inside your mouth and a few light 'bzzzz's.
4678339 Our dentist (again, wonderful) does a q-tip swab of the area where you're getting the novacaine with a numb-er before you get the shot.
Get those cavities fixed early. I've got three crowns, and they cost about that much.

Likewise, but which nerve is being numbed and how the dentist handles the needle are still very significant factors.
I get fillings without any anesthetic. Don't like novacaine shots, and the gas jacks up the visit cost, which my insurance doesn't like. Plus with my mental training, I can basically tune out the pain, even if there is limits to how sharp or strong a pain I can ignore...

*Shivers* Reminds of a couple years ago, when I got all my wisdom teeth removed. Since it was that kind of operation, I had to get anesthetic through injection on the back of my hand. I hate needles more than anything, so the weeks prior were nerve-wracking.

Yeah, my wisdom teeth recovery was awful. They put me under for that.
Funny thing is that there's a donut shop next to a dental clinic in my neighborhood.
I'm also one of the lucky few people who are born without Wisdom Teeth

There was one time, the dentist that i had actually wiggled the needle around as he injected it.
