Pretty much that.
I didn't care for this one. Ember was ridiculously entertaining with all her mannerisms and dialogue, and her scene with Thorax at the end of the episode was pretty great, but none of the characters repping the main cast really behaved in a way that I'd expect of them. Spike contrived the episode's conflict, and Glimmy and Twilight enabled him instead of acting like the voice of reason in the whole affair.
In short, the guest stars were more likable and believable than the characters we're supposed to watch week after week.
Also, we should probably limit the brony pandering to once per episode. Like, you can have LyraBon, or you can have Derpy and muffins; you can't have both at the same time.
Just saying.
So spike created the episodes conflict? Isn't that the status quo by now?

For his episodes, yeah, that's always been his thing.
4640974 I think what gets me is that there's usually someone counterbalancing his nonsense, or he ends up realizing his mistake and works to resolve I think personally, but...
The conflict wrapped up without his input. He wasn't really an agent in his own episode. Things just happened around him, and worked themselves out.
You can't tell me what fandom references I can and can't have.
You're not my mother.
I agree for the most part, however I do have to say that Glimmy and Twilight were both cute and funny, even if they weren't solving the issue.
That and I don't think having those two instances were pandering. They both served a purpose and did it in a short amount of time, so it didn't take away from the episode or halt it just to have them be prevalent.
4641139 Agreed re: Twilight and Starlight. The chairs bit was cute and endearing.
But as far as LyraBon and Derpy are concerned, like. I enjoy shout-outs. But too many at once is distracting. I'd rather they do something new, or try to surprise the audience, with their side characters and background gags. The bit with the two ponies and the benches, that made me laugh.

In all honesty, while I do see your point, I do think they worked here. I do agree, they could have switched out Bon Bon and Lyra for anyone, but it doesn't hurt the story that their in it and the gag with Ditzy and the muffin was kind of clever in its own right as well as playing with how Ember doesn't really understand ponies. They're cute, harmless, and over within less then a moment so they don't impact the story to any real degree. As well, I go with a rule of three when it comes to things like this. Anymore, and yeah, they would be jarring.
At the very least, it isn't distracting or halting the plot (which, unfortunately, happens more often then not in most Discord episodes)

And were considerably more interesting than anything he did!
Thorax made this episode for me. I mean just look at how cute this stupid bug horse nerd is

4641470 Yeah, he definitely had his moments. Still don't love the bugdeer design, but at least it's not wasted on him.
(Am I alone in thinking that his speech patterns and mannerisms aren't dissimilar from Snails's?)
