I Am Become Death: Additional Reading: Magic. · 10:48pm Jul 10th, 2017

I realised I forgot a somewhat important part in the recent chapter. So instead of editing it in, I decided to make it an author’s note.

This is in regards to Magic in the universe of I am Become Death. Specifically the different Magic Type’s functionality, what they are associated with, and how Magic-Based Classes break down among the different schools.

-1st:

Functionality:

  1. Physical: Life/Death.
  2. Mental: Order/Chaos.
  3. Emotional: Light/Shadow.

1. Physical: Life and Death Magic work mostly on the physical plane (Or the Near-physical Ethereal Plane in terms of Death and Souls). Death Magic can manipulate both living and dead tissue. Dead tissue can be regenerated and living tissue can be (painfully) sewn back together. Life Magic however magically generates new tissues as well as provides a warm or cool numbing effect. Death Magic also raises corpses to unlife as anything from the basic Skeleton or Zombie, to the more advanced Graveknight or Corpse Colossus. Life Magic on the other hand can resurrect the dead to full life and when a strong enough resurrection spell his a reanimated undead target it literally burns out the Death Magic and prevents the corpse from being raised again. In the same way Death Magic mends flesh and creates undead, it can also use dead tissue as weapons. Such as Spontaneously exploding corpses or using bones as projectiles. Conversely, Life Magic not only has access to living tissue but, nature and a the elements as well. Life Magic wielders may use the power of Nature to summon spirits of the forests, or call on the Elements to call down thunder and lightning on their enemies or make the very ground beneath them rupture.

2. Mental: Order and Chaos Magics are less about what you do and more about how you think. Arcane Magic is about control. Chaos Magic is about freedom. To put it in gaming perspective. Arcane Casters are Wizards and Chaos Casters are Sorcerers. Arcane Casters read and study the Laws and and Formulas of Magic, while Chaos is about letting your Magic flow through and around you. Unfortunately Chaos Casters will have accidents regularly happen by having weaved Spells spiral out of control and either unravel or grow too strong to be controlled. Many Chaos Casters end up exploding from trying to use too much, too quickly. Arcane Casters have the problem of running out of energy due to focusing too much of their concentration on how the spells they cast function before, during, and after casting. Yes, Arcane Casters are more organized, but at the cost of fewer spells thanks to the short list of memorized spells within their Spellbooks.

3. Emotional: Light and Shadow can both heal and deal damage as much, if not more so, than Life, Death, Chaos, and Order. Such as Light’s Flash Heal, Resurrection, and Destroy Undead, or Shadow’s Pain Spike, Mind Flay, and Curse of Frailty. However they both excel at affecting the minds and emotions of others. Light is about instilling Positive Emotions, such a Hope, Joy, Courage, and Love. Shadow on the other hand, empowers Negative Emotions, such as Fear, Anger, Lust, or Envy. Those with a powerful connection to Light or Shadow can affect others, namely targets in a very strong way. Light, for example, can fill an ally with Determination, surround them in a corona of Light that sings with an unearthly choir, and make them and those around them feel warmth not matter how cold it is outside. Vise-versa, Shadow can make a target be surrounded in pitch-black darkness, devoid of all sound, only left feel hopelessness and despair as the air grows steadily colder. Brief Side-Note: Light and Darkness hold sway of domains that technically are, and technically are not, Elemental. Namely Light’s domain of Heat/Flame, and Shadow’s domain of Cold/Frost.
