Couple of questions with the new update · 12:18am Jun 7th, 2017
Edit: Pointless blog is now pointless, since both my questions have been solved. I’ll leave it up in case anyone else is looking for the same answers (and because I horde y’alls comments )
Most importantly, does anyone know how to add blank space to a chapter? One of the chapters of Finding Home featured about a screen’s worth of empty lines to create a digital blank page. Link to the chapter (obviously that’s spoilery for people who haven’t read Finding Home, which is part of the same series as Looking Glass. So if you’re just reading LG for now, it’s best to just stay away or at least avoid actually reading anything). Right now, there’s just regular spacing in-between paragraphs. Towards the end of the chapter, there’s a scene change marked by a cutie mark. This was meant to be a surprise to the reader, and in a physical book I would’ve wanted a blank page there (it’s sort of like an after-credits scene type of deal). So my digital solution was to just hit enter a bunch to drop the line, which worked fine at the time. New update nixed that effect completely. I tried adding spaces to the empty lines (so they aren’t technically empty) but that didn’t work either. I could add white text, but then people who read on a dark background would see the text. I’d really like for it to just be completely empty if at all possible. I was also intending to use this effect in an upcoming chapter of Looking Glass, so it’s kinda important that I figure out a solution (if one is available) before that chapter goes up
My second question is far less important. Is it still possible to get into user statistics? I know how to get into an individual story’s statistics, but I can no longer find an option to check out my user stats (which would have daily view counts across all stories, something I like to check from time to time). I can live without it to be sure, but I was just curious if there was something I’m missing.
I’m not sure about the first question, but I do know that you can find your User Stats in the “About” tab on your account.
I wish I could help, but I honestly have no idea what’s going on with half the changes on this site right now. And I don’t even have stories to worry about.
Also, I haven’t been commenting too much lately (busy with life and all), but I’ve really enjoyed the latest chapters. Keep up the good work.
White space and custom formatting are gone. Unless they decide to change it down the line, you can't do it any more without a work around like the white text unfortunately.

Figured that would be the easier of the two. And yeah, that’s exactly what I was looking for, thank you I guess I just glossed over it

No worries Glad you’re still enjoying the story, in any case

So it seems, as everything I try yields the same result One website suggested adding blank tags, like [ b][ /b], which apparently fools certain websites that remove blank space, but it didn’t work here.

That’s a great idea, I’ll try that
I’m thinking the way around the white space issues is to upload a tall transparent image somewhere (or even a one-pixel-wide one) and embed it where you want it. I haven’t gotten it working yet -- the images always have the “broken link” placeholder -- but I have a feeling that’s at least partially due to the hosts I was trying to use, though there might also be an issue with how FimFic renders 1x1 images, or images in the new preview switch.

I don’t see why that “solution” is so widespread. Other sites, maybe, but this has non-white backgrounds as a native part of the interface. Even ignoring potential weirdness with the ones that change the default font color, there’s several black-text-on-non-white themes in there. White is not invisible.

The empty image worked perfectly Thank you so much, I never would’ve thought of that
I used deviantART’s sta.sh for hosting the image, and used the dimensions 50 wide by 1080 tall. Oddly wound up not being a full screen despite my monitor resolution being 768px tall, but embedding the image twice solved the problem anyway. If that image size is useful to you, Woven (or anyone else), here’s the url:

And a smaller one, this one 50 x 100:

Glad it worked! When I figured out that the format here doesn’t allow
as a placeholder, I was just trying to figure out what would have some height property without any content. The image was just stepping back and looking at the opposite of that. And thanks for the struts! I don’t currently have anything I need to use them for, but I’ll definitely keep them in mind if I come up with a fic that does.

Like Krickis, I’ve used DeviantArt for hosting the chapter dividers in one of my stories. I didn’t want to go through the entire process of uploading there for testing, though, so was trying to use Google Drive and some random images I just found through searching. Might not have worked as well as I hoped, but it seemed like it could, and I didn’t think I needed to prove it further. Thanks for the tip, though!

Justify in the sense of paying, or justify in the sense of time or focus? I just have a free account, and I have to do some trickiness in getting an address for the embeds rather than just a link to the description, but it still (unofficially) works.

Ah, that’s definitely a reason as well. I personally have a tendency to reserve my name on sites I might do things with, and in the mean time just use them for commenting/tracking favorites, but I can easily see why others might not find that worth it.

If you're just looking for image hosting, dA has a site called sta.sh (that's literally the url) where you can host your images. No one else will see them, so it's not like posting onto dA proper. But you would still need a dA account, so if you've already got somewhere that works then there's no real reason. I just happened to already have a dA for following and commissioning artists.
...And after figuring out how to get it working (the hard way, apparently: someone found a way of doing it with a copied Unicode em-space and italic tags over on Present Perfect's blog), knighty's gone and fixed things. I'm not entirely sure how the math works, so an image might still be best if you need an exact amount of blank space, but empty lines are no longer gobbled once more.

Ah I had tried that with regular spaces surrounded by bold tags, but that didn't do the trick. I suspected using a fancy space might work, but a thin non-breaking space also didn't work.
I'm any event, I'm glad to hear that things were fixed
