The episode's title pretty much sums up my feelings on it. Now that I've finally gotten around to watching it, I just don't know anymore.
Have you ever felt like you've had the rug yanked out from under you? I'm sure you guys have some inkling of how big of a fan of Cheerimac I am, and now I'm left with nothing. And you know what? I find it kind of hard to be overly mad at the damn thing, because I could actually relate to it. Big Mac is one of my favorite characters in the series because I think he's the one pony with whom I can relate the most. And to see him struggle with self-esteem like he did because of Feather Bangs, well, it struck a chord with me.
I've got a lot of conflicting emotions revolving around this one, guys. Probably more than I have any right to. I'm just gonna go ahead and leave off now. And before I go, I've gotten started with the next chapter of Learning Curve. It shouldn't be more than a couple of weeks before it gets posted.
The episode itself was a great big bundle of meh for me, wrapped up in the two worst songs of the show that stretched for like 4+ minutes.
But the most frustrating part (and this is coming from someone not nearly as rabid a Cheerimac shipper as you) is how much of an ass-pull the explanation they gave was. The episode with the love potion very clearly ended with shipping implications, and then they suddenly just retcon it? You can't just have contradicting implications like that—Love potion is unspeakably bad, but Starlight's freaky mind magic is perfectly alright? It's lazy writing, plain and simple. It would almost be less insulting if Big Mac just flat out said "Yes we dated but things didn't really work out but we're still good friends" or something. It would at least be a more mature way to handle Cheerimac shippers, instead of the great big "fuck you" we got.
But god damn those three bitches swooning over Feather Bangs were pretty fucking adorable.Feather Bangs is my soul animal.
It's ok to ignore canon, ya know?
Yeah, poor Cheerilee.
But you've seen the hints - Big Mac like unicorns. And I cant blame him for that.
I guess Cheerilee was a good friend. Only.
weeeell, the episode did end up with Feather Bangs going to court three mares, so harems/herds {whichever you want to call it} are sort of canon. As well, if all parties are willing, three ponies could form a stable relationship so there isn't anything saying that she can't join. Though I'm not a shipper of Cheerimac, since I view them more as friends given what we've seen, if you want it, it could work out like this.
Or you could simply write slight AU's. Either work, since I sorta... shipped Big Mac with Starlight in one story and plan to continue it.
4544502 I agree. All of those nods that got thrown into the show through the seasons, and then they just render all of that moot. The simple one-line dismissal of all of that was beyond frustrating.
On the whole though, I actually enjoyed the episode. The moral was pretty great, and I enjoyed seeing a bunch of the characters from Our Town. If only it hadn't thrown an iceberg at my majestic ship
4544524 I was wondering if they might have called you in for creative advisement to create his character. Were you the voice actor, by chance?
4544770 As much as I would like to, I don't think it's good to ignore canon. It happened, and I now have to live with it.
However, that's not going to stop me from hoping for a follow-up episode where Sugar Belle and Big Mac broke up and he came back to Cheerilee, the only mare he could ever truly love. Yes, that's definitely happening sometime in the future, just gotta wait for them to get through this silly wrinkle in the plot.
Yes.
4544900 I've seen that Big Mac wants to be a unicorn, but I haven't seen any hints that unicorns are a sexual preference. Not that we'd get one of those from this show, but you get the point.
4545694 I'm not really of the opinion that he was going to form a herd. Feather Bangs definitely strikes me as a 'hit it and quit it' kind of guy, so I imagine he'd just go for the foursome and then skip town.
