Review #98 - I Always Thought They'd Be Cooler · 5:12am May 2nd, 2017

Well, I've got my MLP music playing, and I'm ready to get cracking on this review.

I Always Thought They'd Be Cooler by Erisn
(Random, Slice of Life)
The Cutie Mark Crusaders have found their destiny to help other ponies with their Cutie Marks. It's wonderful and all, but they could have been way, way cooler. Starlight Glimmer explains, Applejack disagrees.

Review
Okay, so this one is interesting. It really is a random slice of life fic, which I guess I shouldn't be surprised at, but I find the tags misused way too often on this site. So, Starlight. Starlight is culturally insensitive in the extreme toward Applejack, imaginative, and comes off as learned in the subject of knights, but I do believe I know more about them than she does. And I didn't even study! Anyway, Applejack, for claiming she knows about knights, seems to need an awful lot explained to her. She also takes pretty much everything the wrong way, is stubborn in the extreme, and is rude to Starlight. And then we find out what, that she's jealous? The CMCs are as excitable as they were before they got their cutie marks. While I really like the prospect of the CMCs being knights or something, this fic could have done better. I suppose my main problem is with the characters and how... off... they feel. Like, Applejack being jealous and therefore rude to Starlight? I refuse to accept it. But, as it is time for sleeps, I shall conclude.

The greatest weakness would be the character interactions. They all feel forced, like the characters are doing this against their will. I guess, other than that, it's an alright read.

Recommendation: Intermediate/ Worth Reading. (I cannot go higher because, to put it simply, along with the greatest weakness, the plot is a bit weak. The entire fic, really, is a persuasive writing, attempting to get you to see it the author's way. And while it worked in that respect, the quality suffered for it).
