    Droppin' By

Hello, I was in the neighborhood and had just realized that my last blog post was a bit of a downer, given that it was around the time of my Grandma's passing and funeral. I think I oughta leave you folks with something a bit more upbeat or at least something neutral.

    And Now, A Newsletter

Huh, back in July I said I oughta talk more around here. It's now the day after Christmas and I have not, in fact, talked more around here.

So, I'll give you the rundown on what I've been up to since then. Warning, it gets a little long in talking about last summer's vacation and about a new fixation I have.

"A Flurry of Emotions" Thoughts · 5:30pm Apr 22nd, 2017

And here, we have a babysitting episode! This time, Twilight's taken the reins and has a niece to babysit... I wonder why this episode didn't show up earlier. Let's see how this goes, considering how people seem to be split on Baby Cakes (could be wrong, but I've seen a lot of complaints about that one, so...).

~That's sweet of Twi to read to foals at the hospital! Though... Horsey Hives? Surely you can do better than that!
~On a related note, screw this episode for making me look up actual diseases that horses can get.

~Ah, surprise visits from relatives. Reminds me of the days when some cousins of mine (who live an hour away) would just randomly waltz into our house (often through the back door!) without warning. I don't like surprises like that, they throw me off and screw with my day.

~It wasn't wise for Twilight to agree to watch Flurry Heart (bleck, I still hate that name) when she had a scheduled thingy, but to be honest, I wouldn't be able to resist watching a baby relative/neighbor either (did just that last week; he was a happy, bouncy boy!).

~Of course mashed peas aren't her favorite... guess I wasn't paying attention enough to predict the joke.

~Huh, interesting. This episode could have gone the route of 'Flurry Heart causes mischief just because', but it's showing that Twilight's divided attention is getting to the little filly, so she acts up (between the toy store and the classroom). Toddlers can be pretty irritating when they're fussy, especially when you're running errands, but at least it's showing some semblance of a reason that Flurry's being so naughty.
~Babies have a simple mind and a smaller world, so I'm much less harsh on a baby character than an adult character. The worst my views on a baby could get would just be ambivalence.

~Yay, Flurry and Cakes meeting! So far, it's looking really sweet.

~Gotta give credit to these new writers for bothering to look up past episodes to reference--it's great to see Pinkie bring up the party cave! Did I mention that Pinkie's wonderful in this scene? I love it when she's all crazy-prepared and stuff.

~Wow, poor Flurry. She tried her best to settle the twins' fight, but it backfired horribly. I find it funny that two normal babies are essentially chasing and throwing baked goods at a demigoddess.

~Why did you bring a baby to a hospital full of sick kids...

~OMG they mentioned Grogar! He's brought up so much in the fandom that I can't not know who he is.

~Aaaaaand here's the context for the temper tantrum. It's a good thing that that it didn't last too long and replaced it with the worry over her lost snail toy. Otherwise, I would have gotten so irritated, because even I, one who's normally patient with little children, can't stand temper tantrums.

~Not gonna lie, I laughed aloud at the "Say 'ahh'" part.

~So, after some crazy levitation of some sick foals, Twilight's had enough, yells at Flurry, and scares her to whimpering. Admittedly, I was a little confused over what the moral was supposed to be when Twilight apologized to Flurry for how the day went (because while I did get Flurry's POV, Twilight did have important things to get to).
~I guess it might be something like not agreeing to take on another responsibility when you've already got a full day.
~Also, at least Twilight told Cadance and Shining Armor that things went haywire. Thus, they realize that they really should have given Twi a heads up (I personally prefer having a heads up over "Surprise! We're going somewhere!"... if I had a heads up, I'd at least be prudent enough not to plan on writing that day and not throw a fit over the interruption).

~And Spike. He's in top form this episode, being that Number One assistant we all know and love. I liked his bit at the end, reading that story of a heroic dragon (can I hear more of that? That story sounds so cool!).
~I agree with that foal that said that he kinda looked like that dragon on the cover. I've seen a few people wonder if that's foreshadowing, but I don't think it is. Just a cute compliment of a good fella.
~Maybe the Grogar thing is foreshadowing, but, eh, I dunno.

At the very least, it was a cute and entertaining episode that made me laugh. It wasn't as predictable and cliche as Baby Cakes (though I'm no hater of that episode, it does fall into the same pitfalls as just about every other babysitting episode), and it actually presented Flurry as a character with her own thoughts and feelings instead of a constant obstacle that just cries, poops, and gets into trouble over and over and over...

So, yeah, I liked this one.

...ugh, a Maud episode next week. I'll watch it for the sake of having seen all the episodes at least once, but knowing me, you probably don't want to hear my thoughts on it--it'd likely just be me ranting furiously about how fed up I've been with her for the past two and a half years.

What I liked about this episode is it that it's the first one where we really get to see something of Flurry Hearts' character, aside from her cameo in the season 6 finale. In The Crystalling she's newborn and doesn't really have a very well formed personality. In this episode, we see that she is brave, helpful, and the natural leader.

Even though she doesn't really understand how things work well enough to make the right decisions, she tries to help with Pound and Pumpkin, and remember that on any reasonable chronology she is at least a year or two younger than them. Yet she was the one taking charge. At least at first.

Then of course they got mad and ganged up on her. But then they are siblings.
