All Art Is Quite Useless

When I'm not writing stories, I'm writing essays. My keyboard sees fairly frequent use. University student, high functioning Rainbow Dash enthusiast, and satirical activist.

So, I'm open for commissions. · 12:52am Mar 24th, 2017

Now, as some of you may know, I'm relatively new to the whole fanfiction thing, and in all honesty, the author thing too. So I guess the question here is: Why in God's name would you spend your own (hard earned?) cash in order to see me pedal out horsewords? Well, I'd like to suggest a few reasons, and let you make your own mind up!

First off, I'm pretty devoted. By this, I mean that I put a significant amount of effort, detail, and consistency into my work. While I'm not exactly well known on this site (as of yet) I put that mainly down to the fact that I'm still quite new here, but I can guarantee that I do take my work seriously, I always have done so. If you come to me with a premise that I'm willing to work with, and you in turn are willing to pay to see that story realised, I am going to work hard to ensure that you get your money's worth.

Second, I'll be frank with you. By that, I mean that I'll tell you my strong points, and what I might not be suited to writing before allowing you to part with any of your hard earned questionably earned earned cash. Also, I'm not going to try to rip you off. Before I take a penny from you, I'll work out an estimate of how many words your fic should end up going on for, and I'll give you a price based upon that. If the fic then proceeds to go over that word count, that's my fault for giving you an inaccurate estimate, and I won't ask for more money, but I'll still complete it! (Example: I tell you that your project will be around 8,000 words max, and charge you for that amount, part in advance and part upon completion. If it runs for under 8,000 words, I charge you less than what I quoted, if it runs for over 8,000 words, I most certainly do not charge you more.)

Third, I'll give you a realistic time quote. If your project is going to require significant research and planning on my part, or I'm affected by time constraints, I'm not going to make false promises in an attempt to mollify you. If it can't be done for a little while, I'll let you know that ahead of time. If I say that I'll have something written within a month, and it takes three, expect a discount upon completion. (Now that I've said that, you're damn right I'm going to try to keep to my schedules.)

Fourth, I'd like to think that I write reasonably well, and that I'm open to a lot of ideas. Examples of some of my current work can be found below:

The third link is to an original fiction written for The Writeoff Association's latest contest, it was my first entry and it placed in the finals. It was 8,000 words long and I wrote it in two days. While I know that the content here only amasses to 50,000 words or so, I would like to think that it is the beginning of a decent portfolio, one that I am constantly expanding.

Fifth and final point! I will always work to the best of my ability to give you what you want. (Also, I'll work diligently.) We can discuss details, events you absolutely wish to see transpire in your story in certain ways etc. The point is that it's your story that I'm writing, and I will treat it as such! I'm not particularly worried about constraints, but I also feel that I can be innovative, so, if you wish to allow me the freedom to pitch my own interpretation of your idea, should it not be fully formed, I'm happy to do that also.

Now that I've discussed the things that might just make my writing worth investing in, allow me to scare you off tell you my terms, and limits.

-No clop. (This one is a solid rule, it's not happening.)
-No excessive gore. (I'm not rewriting Cupcakes for you, I don't care how much you pay me.)
-I'd rather not write anything HiE based. (I mean, discuss it with me if you like, but don't expect me to jump at the chance.)
-Crossovers will depend on whether I have seen the relevant show/played the relevant game etc.
-Most importantly, if I don't want to write it, that's my choice. I can begrudgingly accept an idea that I'm not particularly keen on writing and put a smile on my face if I have to, but if I'm dead set against an idea, due to the plot, theme, my reluctance to write it, or feeling of inability to do so, that's my prerogative.

Apart from that long list of no no's, I'm pretty open. Things I can write pretty well include:

-Drama
-Comedy
-Adventure
-Slice of Life
-Alternate Universe

Things I am not as experienced in writing, but open to attempting include:

-Dark fics (Just skip the gore!)
-Sad fics
-Romance (Just skip the clop!)

Here we come to rates: (If you hadn't already bolted when I said I wouldn't write your Twilestia slasher clopfic, that is.)

All word counts will be estimated in advance of writing.

A oneshot will be given an estimate of between 2000-10000 words, barring exceptional circumstances (Seriously, I've seen a LOT of words squeezed into one chapter before). Basic fee of £8/$10 per 1000 words will apply. Research/planning fees are unlikely to be applicable, unless the story is extremely involved for its rather small limit, but these will be worked out via PM if necessary. Half of the fee will be taken upfront once the word count has been estimated, the other half upon completion.

Multi chapter stories will be given a chapter estimate, chapters will likely be 1000-5000 words each, and while a portion of the overall estimated wordcount will be taken upfront, the rest will be taken piece by piece upon chapter completion. Research and planning fees are likely to be applicable to more complex stories, but will not be excessively priced. Basic fee of £8/$10 per 1000 words also applies here, but may be discounted somewhat for longer stories.

(Note: If I've written something for you and you request a creative rewrite, whether there is a charge or not will depend on whether it is my mistake. For example, if you've asked for something in your story to be done in a certain way ahead of time, and I've not done that, then that's my error and I'll happily fix it for free. However, if you've changed your mind about an area of the story that you asked for in the first place, once I've already written it for you, I'm not changing that for free.)

Help with story design for writers and help with editing and proofreading is something I might be interested in providing, but rates would be decided on a case to case basis.

In conclusion, please feel free to consider me. I believe in fair wages for creatives, and hope that any that are interested will find my rates agreeable. If you wish to discuss anything, trial me, arrange a commission, or just ask a question, drop it in the comments, or feel free to PM me.

I hope to be working on your story soon!

I wouldn't ask for more money, don't worry about that. I feel as if I might have worded part of this blog post wrong if you're getting that impression from it. What I do is engage in preliminary talks with the customer before working out a projected word limit and price based upon that, which is agreed upon by both parties. Once that's settled, and I've received half of the payment, I write their story. If it goes under the estimated word limit (which is synonymous with the estimated price) then they get a little money off. If it goes over the estimated word limit, I write any extra words for free, as the estimate is the maximum that I'll take.

Considering that, it sounds as if we charge the same way.

$20-100 is a wide margin for a one shot, yes, but some oneshots are bloody long, and if I'm writing $10/k, and the projected word limit upon completion is 10,000 words, then I'm rightly going to charge $100, as that would have been the agreed price. In this case, I would still charge $100 if I ended up finishing at 12-14000, as I won't charge more on a base price than what me and the customer have agreed to in advance.

I hope this helps! Let me know if there's anything else I can do to make my rates more clear.

4505746 It's no problem! Honestly, I constantly skim read things, so I can more than see where you're coming from there.

Dang, I was considering commisioning you but then I read you don't do clop. Ah well.

Had this tab open for a bit but keeping the option open - I've never commissioned someone for a story before... actually, come to think of it, a couple times, but neither of them were Fimfics. And in either case the story was at least partially set. But still, I'm intrigued...

4508530 Unfortunately, I don't, sorry! (Could probably write a decent dragonball crossover if prompted though, you never know!)

4538487 Well, feel free to message me with any ideas or questions that you may have! I'm currently in the process of finishing off another commission, but I'll be available to take on a new one soon, if that's convenient for you? Thanks for showing interest, I'm here if you need anything.
