[FANFICTION FRIDAY] Hmmm...I may need more time for this... · 2:52pm Mar 5th, 2017
So this chapter is turning out to be a LOT bigger than I thought it would. What seems in the mind's outline to be a simple few scenes can require a LOT of additional dialog and narrative to stitch them all together. I'm torn at this point on whether to split the chapter or just post one really long one.
How many words does it have? I have some difficulty reading 10,000-ish word chapters in one sitting because it takes a good hour or so for me to get through. I don't like to stop in the middle of a chapter, so unless I set aside an hour to read one of those beasts, they tend to sit in my "unread chapters" section for a while. I'd say 5,000-ish words is the sweet spot for me where a chapter isn't too long, but I might suggest cutting it in two if it gets past (passed? ) 6,000. I hope my rambling is more helpful than it is annoying.
4445105 I've made the same observation. Generally, the sweet spot is around 5k words for me as well. Very few authors (two, I believe) have managed to keep me hooked for 11k-word-chapters, so it's possible but difficult to pull off. Else my mind starts to drift away from the chapter to other things, which is not good.

This is good feedback. :)
It's not that long, just yet. I'm starting to approach 4,000 words now, and a bit of judicious narrative jumping has trimmed down what I was afraid would be a monster chapter quite a bit. Still plugging away on this one, expect it to be posted in the next day or three.
4445123 I agree.
4445664 I'm glad my feedback isn't just tolerable but actually helpful and agreed upon!
