    Droppin' By

Hello, I was in the neighborhood and had just realized that my last blog post was a bit of a downer, given that it was around the time of my Grandma's passing and funeral. I think I oughta leave you folks with something a bit more upbeat or at least something neutral.

    And Now, A Newsletter

Huh, back in July I said I oughta talk more around here. It's now the day after Christmas and I have not, in fact, talked more around here.

So, I'll give you the rundown on what I've been up to since then. Warning, it gets a little long in talking about last summer's vacation and about a new fixation I have.

Birthday Bios: Bubblegum · 2:57pm Dec 4th, 2016

All right, we are now in December, and I cannot believe that I managed to make it this far in these bios. Wow! You’d think that an individual such as myself would have run out of steam before the year was even halfway done. And after this bio, I have seven more to go! :yay:

All right, so nearly nine months have passed since I covered the adventurous SugarFavor son Balloon Buddy; now, we cover his younger sister, Bubblegum, who apparently takes after Grandpa Quasar Rune in having a more reserved nature and expressing interest in magic, except I think she might be more pretentious and humorless while pursuing answers to her curiosities.

Anyway, expanding on that under the break.

The second foal of Sugar Belle and Party Favor, after older brother Balloon Buddy, little Bubblegum wasn’t much of a crier, but wasn’t much of a smiler either. Even so, the family was happy to welcome the little filly to the world, affectionately referring to her as “Bubbles”.

She possessed a great curiosity from the moment she walked, though that manifested itself in figuring out cause and effect by dropping things, rolling things, and pulling her brother’s tail. She often tried to imitate nearly every unicorn she saw levitate things, though her own magic surges came and went whenever they wanted to, which was frustrating for the tiny filly.

Of course, seeing that her parents didn’t really like the messes she made, she pursued a way to learn that didn’t cause any harm. Thus, she took to flipping through pages of books she found, seeing that there must be something interesting that other ponies were seeing in it, and gradually taught herself how to read at the age of three. Her parents were surprised when she demonstrated it for them, along with a rare proud smile at her accomplishment.

She sought to learn everything there is to know, and took to reading every book in town, and every book that was in her grandfather’s study. When she started school, she was already flying through her schoolwork and homework, the answers coming to her head very easily. She has even tried to do Buddy’s homework, which her parents would drag her away and tell her that he needed to do it on his own. Buddy resented that she could finish her homework faster than he ever could.

Any attempts at intellectually stimulating conversation with her classmates always failed, as they never had any idea what she was talking about. They don’t care about the physics of the bouncy ball, they just want to play with it. The mechanics and formulas of spells were a little too advanced for unicorn foals just learning basic telekinesis. And nopony wants to hear about why playing in the snow is a horrible, life-threatening thing. Her snobbish attitude didn’t help things either, and her parents tried to make her tone it down.

Bubbles unfortunately got bored easily, since she has read every book in the house multiple times, could practice her magic oh so many times in a day, and any puzzles that her parents could come up with were too simple for her. Party Favor has tried to entertain her with creative balloon displays and some jokes he got from party pony pen pals, but she felt that they were just too infantile. Party Favor always has to remind her that she’s a child, and she should learn to enjoy the simple things.

Buddy has tried to get her to come on adventures with him and explore the countryside or the mountains. However, with her having read of the dangers of nature, she always let the fear of the million and one things hiding in the wilderness hold her back. Buddy has to remind her that she can only learn so much from books—valuable lessons can only be learned through experience.

The latter phrase Bubbles didn’t quite take seriously because she viewed her brother as a hypocrite. He never seemed to learn his lesson about jumping off the roof, and she found it ridiculous that he wanted to fly. Every time she saw him attempting to take to the air, she was quick to inform whichever parent was closest. Her self-righteous tattletale tendencies tended to get on Buddy’s nerves.

Of course, if there was anything that could get Bubbles to tone it down, it was anything sugary. She had a notorious sweet tooth, and she was at her happiest when eating cookies, or cakes, or anything. It’d be the only time she didn’t care about nitpicking anything harmful from a situation she faced, and she’d actually act like the kid she was. Heck, sometimes she’d sneak some of her mother’s sweets when no one was looking, despite knowing full well that she was a hypocrite for telling on Buddy for his naughtiness while she got away with hers.

For years, one question that could never be answered was the structural integrity of her father’s balloon creations. Logically, they should last so long or function the way they did; and yet, Party Favor created a functional aerostat for him and Buddy to ride in, instruments that actually made music, and entire fun fairs that lasted for quite a few weeks—all out of balloons. She has tried to come up with a logical explanation, but her mother would tell her that it was just his unconventional magic at work, and dissecting it would just kill it.

Her finally getting up and doing something as opposed to reading about it, that being of casting a spell that took apart an apple atom by atom for her to study, was how she earned her cutie mark. She had been terribly afraid of failure for a long time, and making an apple explode for years would upset her. She had to be told that mistakes were a natural part of learning. She was quite proud when she finally got it right.

Bubbles was allowed to travel to Canterlot to attend Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns, with Party Favor letting his parents know that their granddaughter was coming so that they could make arrangements. From there, she’d learn a whole lot more about magic and the sciences behind it.

Much of her adolescence was spent in that school, where she finally had friends that could actually understand what she’s talking about. She enjoyed going to presentations made by Princess Twilight Sparkle, who she views as an inspiration. And she’s come to realize that exploring can lead to new discoveries that simply reading can’t allow one to do.

Soon enough, she realized that though she was a talented unicorn, she wasn’t quite to the level of being a ‘great mage’ comparable to Twilight, or Twilight’s student Starlight Glimmer (who had visited the town from time to time, so Bubbles knew her a bit). No matter, as she supposed that being a teacher like her grandfather would be suitable enough for her. So, she took courses directing her down that path, and she’d replace Quasar Rune when he retired.

As a teacher, she’s still quite the no-nonsense pony, and it’s fairly hard to get her to laugh. She’ll scare her students straight when they partake in disruptive tomfoolery, and she expects them to do their work. They are at a prestigious school—they should act professional, after all. As usual for her, she’s at her nicest when somepony gives her a sugary treat. Some have even tried to bribe her to look the other way (though she saw right through it).

However, she does like to go back to her hometown and visit her parents to catch up. If her ever-traveling brother is there as well, it’s cause for a little family party. She’s all ears when Buddy talks about his exploits in that hot air balloon of his, and vice versa. They even like to tease each other over some silly things.

Nevertheless, she’s most at home curled up in a corner with a good book.

You're down to the wire. I have every confidence that you'll complete the set.

As for Bubblegum, very nice rundown of her learning some very hard lessons and growing from it. Books can grant knowledge, but wisdom must be earned.
