- Edward Albee, 88, American playwright (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?).
- W. P. Kinsella, 81, Canadian writer (Shoeless Joe), assisted suicide.

September 17:
- Charmian Carr, 73, American actress and singer (The Sound of Music).

September 18:
- C. Martin Croker, 54, American voice actor and animator (Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Brak Show).
