With that out of the way, I hope the new chapter's length makes up for the waiting time. I know it's not exactly a 20,000 word doorstopper installment like some people do, but it still ended up being longer than I expected. If there's one thing I can say I've learned from this, it's not to try to write the chapter out sequentially; the scene with Aslith went through so many revisions (half of which were unfortunately deleted out of sheer frustration) and blockages that took up most of the three years since the last update, while the rest of the chapter went by in... oh, less than a week, give or take. The upside is that in that time, I've managed to flesh out my plans for the story much, much better, and figured out exactly what kind of tone I'm aiming for. (Also, There may even be a sequel? Maybe? As long as I can seriously up my output pace moving forward.)
It's also interesting to note how the chapter's undergone some changes from the original plan. The scene with Twilight wasn't in the books until about a week or so before I finally wrote the chapter, and the ponies moving the couch in literally happened as I was writing that scene; originally, it was just going to be Chrysalis pondering on her own.
I won't try to give you a solid ETA for the next chapter, since I probably won't be able to keep to that, but if it helps, I've already started writing it, and have a loose outline for how things will go. I will definitely aim to have it out much sooner than three years, or even one year for that matter. Things are going to be getting juicy, now that most of our major players have been introduced and Chrysalis will finally be getting out of that office. Fun times lie ahead.
Badhorse advocates the same thing. He says, if you're stuck on a scene, go write or revise another part of your story.
4160228 I've definitely learned my lesson there.
