me checking the dislike ratio on my new story

Glad to know bigotry is still alive and well in this fandom.

It's glad to see some of us didn't watch the same series as I did.

    So where I've been

Okay, uh... how do I begin this? Well, I suppose I should start with the obvious. Yes, I've been distracted. If you follow me on Archive that should be obvious. And if you don't, you totally should btw. Yes, I'm shameless.

So, more computer related updates... · 4:09pm Aug 8th, 2016

Yeah, I'm getting tired of these as well. So, apperantly the guy I thought we'd get to take a look at the computer is out of town for whatever reason, didn't ask why, but the important thing is my computer is still just a overpriced paperweight right now. Mom does have another guy she can contact, but honestly? I have no real idea when the computer will be fixed.:fluttershysad:

It's depressing ya know? I'm a artist, and have more projects I want to work on besides fanfics, and not being able to do them is just extremely frustrating.:twilightangry2:

But I have found a way to get around my problem with the Magic of... Music? if that makes you feel any better.:yay: What I'm going to do is, take the Blissy route and descibe the song being played in as much depth as I can, and when the computer is fixed or I get a new one, just add in the YouTube videos of the song later.

...Oh, in other news I ordered a Funko Spitfire for less then TEN dollars which should show up tomorrow thanks to Amazon Prime.:yay:

Urgh, computers are wonderful and all but when they broke on you they're horrendous.

My computer update was a complete failure. Windows backup/ghost programme doesn't work and won't display the entire error message so I can fix the problem. Heck it won't even let me install Windows 7 anew.

The Acronis ghost software was too old to handle GPT Hard Drive and UEFI BIOS type. It did transfer all my data on my new disk, but not the boot software and my attempt to install it otherwise only end up having my drive completely erase.

Not letting this turn-back deter me, it decide to simply install windows 10 on it and use it as the primary boot. Surprise the programme says my hardware is incompatible for the software to download, WTF! Still not letting it deter me. I went on the Windows website to at least download the installer on a USB thumbdrive, nope, Microsoft doesn't allow it anymore, double WTF!

At that moment, fuck it, I waste two days on it, I still have the ghost on my external Hard Drive, I'll look up another time for this boot problem. As for Windows 10, pff, wasn't gonna use it that much anyway. I'll just buy a laptop with it, maybe rip the OS on my tower and synchro them.

Where ya live? I'm a tech for Staples. There's a tech center in all of them.

What's yer OS (bittage), desktop or PC, do you have the Windows product key on it somewhere, is the hard-drive in and of itself OK and its just the OS, or is the HD fucked as well, either way may be able to recover your data, how much $$ ya got to spend on repairs?

Hi, sorry it took so long to get back to you both on this, but I had to be with my mom at her monthly doctor's appointment among other things.

4138815 Live somewhere in Florida, so unless you're in the state somewhere near my city (Which I won't give out for obvious reasons) I'm not sure if you can help. What basically happened was one of my cats knocked the tower or whatever it's called (I know zilch about computers except how to turn one on or off) off the table it was placed on and sent it crashing to the floor. You can still start it up, but it stays stuck on the start up screen.

4138752 Ouch, and I thought my problems were bad...

4139061

I wouldn't call it bad, just annoying. Nowadays computer problems are easy to solve. You have internet, I.T. experts, hot line centers, etc. before that you were pretty boned.

Heck, my very first computer was a Oric Atmos, a computer of the likes of Commodor 64 or ZX Spectrum, the kind of thing you must type all in basic code to perform programs or use a cassette tape for "faster" input.

4139061 Pretty sure there's plenty of Staples in Florida, so it'll be with some other tech guys, just not me. At least Staples give flat rates, not a 'per hour' charge.

Ok, you prolly have a platter drive, I imagine. Not a solid-state. So what probably happened is the hard-drive's needle--- quite similar to a vinyl record player, except a hell of a lot more precise and delicate, got fucked.

Data recovery: vaguely possible but.... well, our rate is $69 to take out the hard drive, put it in one of our caddies, and if you're lucky, they may be able to recover the data (it is possible to have it sent out to a lab where they take out the platters and read it directly, but it's so expensive, only business with customer data and such really go for it).

Get it back to working: assuming some soder somewhere didn't break-- you're getting through BIOS, so looks like it's not the motherboard (if it was: enjoy your new paperweight), but in fact the hard drive. Again, look all over the case, usually at the top, there's a sticker to the tune of this:
images.pcworld.com/images/article/2011/12/case20product20key-5861943.jpg or like so 14635-presscdn-0-96.pagely.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/windows7licensesticker.jpg
Important part is the product key: it's 5 sets of 5 characters, a mix of letters and numbers. Should also say which version you got. If you got that, you're pretty solid. Now:

Hard drive: depends what ya wanna get. A good solid-state, no moving parts, basically a big flash drive, so it REALLY boosts your computer speed (have them toss in some RAM if you wanna buy some, while they're in there. If they're nice, they may waive the usual $40 component installation fee), but about $150 median for a good solid state in the 128-250 GB range. $80-$100 for a 1 or 2 TB platter drive.
I actually recommend both: a smaller SSD for your main operating system, and a cheap fatty platter drive for your clop and porn personal files. Since you have a desktop, you more than likely got room in there to connect a second drive. An SSD & a platter, or two platters: either way, having two makes it unlikely that both will critically fail at the same time: if the operating system drive crashes, at least your files will be OK. if the data drive crashes, at least you're not out a working computer.

OS installation: if the techs at that Staples are worth their salt, they ought to have the generic Windows install disks for a few different versions lying around (or they can just download the ISO), in which case that product key I mentioned will save you some time and money. $130 for the OS install, they'll run updates and do an integrity check. If they're in a good mood, they may include the data transfer in that too, instead of the other $69.

tl;dr - 'bout $200, if luck's on your side. Maybe a little less, maybe a little more.
