This post is about this new story of mine: Spike Befriends a Changeling
When I saw the season 6 mid-season promo video, I nearly pissed myself.
Oh, Celestia, another love/hate episode is coming. Just like when the CMC got their cutie marks. Loved the episode, but hated the ruined headcanon. And no doubt, this coming changeling episode will be just that. I won't bitch (much), but you know it's true.
So I really wanted to push out one changeling fic before all my headcanon was invalidated. Cuz you know, that's kind of important when you write about the stuff? At least afterwards, I can say about my upcoming stories, 'no I established that before the episode came out.' But people will still inevitably call for the AU tag at some point.
And for me, as many of you, I have very specific beliefs about changelings. That they're just like ponies, but can't 'make' their own love, like ponies, and die a slow agonizing death without it. Hence the love thievery. I'm horrible to my characters, aren't I?
Actually, you have no idea. I currently have 3 changeling fics in the works, not counting this one. The first one started as an extension of a joke about Twilight having a changeling in her basement in one of my published fics. (Internet cookie for those of you that know which one.) This changeling story, as I wrote it over the years (yes, years), I came to find that it was extremely dark. Which I knew at the time. But like, now, when I go back and read it… it's like cupcakes without a death at the end. I mean, it's brutal. Twilight is brutal.
To spoil it, because honestly, I might never publish it, the changeling telling the story in first person present tense is named Sertrous. An old suggestion from GeTa (we're kind of talking to each other again), apparently an Abyssal name from some Dungeons and Dragons stuff I know nothing about. It means something like prince of the parasites, which I thought was incredibly clever, given that at the end of the story, Sertrous becomes a political figure for the changelings. Anyway, Twilight 'experiments' on Sertrous by breaking bones and pulling teeth, not to mention starving him. I won't know if I wrote it well until I publish it, but me looking back at it now, it's pretty fucken dark.
Anyway, that's where this story comes from. The perspective is now Spike's and the whole thing is, you know, not dark as fuck anymore. Although, still a bit grim. Twilight starving a caged animal in her basement, ignoring Spike's pleas, and doing it in the name of science is still kinda messed up, yo.
In the beginning, Spike mentions the boiler room. Here I'm trying to point out, as a side thing, that the Crystal Castle (the one in Ponyville) was outfitted with plumbing and central heating (more plumbing for radiant heat). The castle grew out of the ground as an extension of the tree of harmony, which by the way, would imply that the tree is either sentient, or was 'programmed' with the design of a castle by some other sentient being. Either way, whatever it had in mind was surely designed before the advent of such luxuries as indoor toilets.
Starlight Glimmer was thrown in at the last moment, because I was like 'oh yeah, equality horse lives there now.' I hope she doesn't seem too… phoned in, or whatever.
Spike mentions the Canterlot Conventions. No, that isn't a gathering of people like furries, bronies, or Trekkies. That refers to the Geneva Conventions. Essentially a rulebook for war.
Convention III
Part II Article 13. Prisoners of war must at all times be humanely treated. Any unlawful act or omission by the Detaining Power causing death or seriously endangering the health of a prisoner of war in its custody is prohibited, and will be regarded as a serious breach of the present Convention. In particular, no prisoner of war may be subjected to physical mutilation or to medical or scientific experiments of any kind which are not justified by the medical, dental or hospital treatment of the prisoner concerned and carried out in his interest.
Likewise, prisoners of war must at all times be protected, particularly against acts of violence or intimidation and against insults and public curiosity.
Measures of reprisal against prisoners of war are prohibited.Article 14. Prisoners of war are entitled in all circumstances to respect for their persons and their honour.
Article 15. The Power detaining prisoners of war shall be bound to provide free of charge for their maintenance and for the medical attention required by their state of health.
Although I think technically, I would consider Seyr an enemy alien, not really a POW. The Geneva Conventions also provide similar protections for enemy aliens, but it gets fuzzy there, because they then become 'refugees' and it said somewhere that a government could still put them in internment camps, basically. Plus I didn't feel like reading all of that. Blah.
So yeah, shame on you, Twilight.
Also, I've never written a whole lot of Spike, and never as a narrator, so I'm hoping that I did his 'voice' right.
Um… I can't think of anything else right now, because it's four in the fucking morning!
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask them in the comments!
