Commentary Flutter Brutter S06E11 SPOILERS
Flutter Brutter commentary. Spoilers right out of the gate! You have been warned!
Okay, I'll come out and say it now, and hopefully I won't break into an overwhelming rant and rave later.
I THOUGHT that the writers had LEARNED from Shining Armor, since they gave it a tiny bit of foreshadowing with Maud Pie (yes it was a retcon, but at least it showed they were TRYING!!!).
And they were given a WHOLE EXTRA SEASON for this character to be foreshadowed in series! A picture in the background of Fluttershy's cottage would have been perfect! No need to change any of the scripts, no nothing! And they STILL didn't have some foreshadowing?! Boo. Hiss. Snarl.
And seriously, Rainbow Dash, who lived in the same city as Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie who has a detailed profile of every pony in Ponyville (which makes her not knowing about Shining Armor make less sense), NOT knowing Fluttershy had a brother?! WTH? Applejack keeps to herself so her not knowing is one thing. Rarity is the definition of knowing social connections, how could she not know after knowing Fluttershy for so bloody long and at one point was even considered her best friend? Twilight... she's the audience surrogate, and knows books much better than ponies so at first glance you think it would be illogical for her TO know... but then you remember Twilight did all those genealogy records on her friends at one point, how could they have any siblings Twilight doesn't know about?!
Seriously, this seriously ticks me off as a story teller.

Sigh. So Fluttershy got it from BOTH SIDES of her family? How did these two ever REPRODUCE if they were both this reserved?

RD laughs at Zephyr Cloud, Fluttershy's brother who has never been mentioned before. -_- (See above.). Who thought Square Clouds would be the next big thing on the planet (Hey, makes sense to me).
"He's matured a lot since then." Being wrong about which way the market will go does not show immaturity.
If they're BOTH so soft spoken, where the heck did Zephyr did get his loud attitude from?! 0-o?
And if this guy is so lazy and unmotivated, how the heck does he even HAVE a cutie mark!??!?!?!??!
Apparently 'mane therapy' is his career choice. (And what's with HIS mane style? He looks like a maid. And he's the LITTLE brother? He sure doesn't look it!)
Seriously, these two are such limp noodles, how did they impart ANYTHING on Fluttershy?
'Sprinkle Pie' I know that was meant to showcase how inconsiderate he is, but given how the overwhelming majority of Equestria has their heads in the sand, the fact he even KNOWS his sister has a party planner pony whose the best is a freakin' step up!
(Even if RD finds out he has no clue RD is now in the bolts and he thinks the 'best flyer' thing is a attempt to impress him).
Also, I'm 34, and I live with my parents, and I find this offense, there it's said. Moving on.
This reminds me of a comic where Discord after moving in with Fluttershy was the most lazy creature on the planet.
"The TV's on the frtiz."
"That's two things here that won't work."
"We're not as bold as you Fluttershy."
Again, if they're LESS bold than her, how did they ever get to the maternity nest? Arranged marriage?
And considering bloody how much Fluttershy just smiled and nodded with the breezies as they took advantage of her kindness, I'm stunned she has a problem with her brother.
RD reading as Zephyr tells details of his life story, he doesn't notice and RD doesn't care.
Again, after five years of seeing bullies, and other leeches, and Angel, all push around Fluttershy, I'm STUNNED to see her actually bring out the sarcasm and bite in her voice at her brother's attitude! Feels, OUT OF PLACE.
RD (infamous for her napping), "You know it's the middle of the day right?"
Hypocrite.
And when Zephyr is gone, Shy reverts to her canon self.
So they've learned to tune out Pinkie Pie saying high, and NOT being happy about being ignored, but not Apple whistling at them like dogs.
Okay, so they DO KNOW Zephyr, but it's kinda insane how he can go unspoken of all this bloody time. (And this from a guy who has some aunts he's NEVER seen due to family issues with one of my parents).
"Do anything for himself." Fluttershy may have a steady job, but she's the one taking care of animals rather than THEM doing anything for themselves. And then Fluttershy can't believe how her parents let her brother always trot all over them... geeze, doesn't that sound familiar? Fish really can doubt the existence of water.
-_- Okay. One of my parents has mountains of junk they are never going to use that I wish I could sneak out to the dumpster when they're not looking. But seriously, tossing out stuff OUT A CLOSED WINDOW, and shattering the containers that are the equivalent of bonsai trees or ships in bottles? What a prick.
Also he was tossing it in his mom's flower bed... -_- Just because you justify it as her being willing to replant, is no justification to toss stuff in her flower bed.
Zephyr is terrified of being on his own. I can relate, then again, at least he's actually LIVED outside his parents' house, so he's already proven he's capable of functioning outside it.
And either Zephyr missed his calling as an actor, or he really is heart broken at having his happy world go kaput in one discussion, having no idea that was eroding for years.
Shy. You put with ****ING DISCORD! A dyed in the wool sociopath and gave him a soul. Zephyr already has one, and he doesn't have the powers of a god, he should be easy peasy!
And Angel doesn't want to share his carrot with the stone gnome rabbit.
And why does Zephyr think RD has a thing for him?! This isn't Ranma 1/2 and Zephyr is lazy, not detached from reality!
"You have to get a job." WHY DIDN'T SHE DO THAT WITH DISCORD?!
Why not get Zephyr a job at the spa? He knows basic mane care! And with the pretty but stern exotic beauties around him, he'd fly right in.
What I don't get? If the animals in Equestria are obvious sapient, and clearly can understand the ponies, and it's simply the ponies are too dim to understand the animals... how did Zephyr fail to communicate with them?
"Innocent woodland creatures." -_- Rarity has a point that she asked HIM to do it, but it's not like he put them in a sweat shop.
Guess Rarity doesn't like tie-dye.
Wow. Twilight ACTUALLY getting some hired help BESIDES Spike?
Gotta give Zephyr CREDIT, that he was able to charm Spike into doing all the work 'by example' MUST have some constructive means to society.
LINK IN BACKGROUND! ... So much for him being a pegasus. Notice all cameos in existence are earth ponies? Feels... a little disquieting.
TO be fair, all that zapping was likely a good first step. AND it seems that he's realized that RD isn't into him. That's progress.

He's going to try and leech off Zecora isn't he? Either that or run for his life.
Cause the Everfree is NOT a normal pony woods!
And Angel had made friend with the gnome bunny... too bad.
Personally, I think this is for the best.
AND HE KNOWS the girls actually saved the world? That actually puts him above most!
I object, quitting has a comfort to it, a warm embrace, a peaceful stillness.
In my life experience, you run two miles on a one mile race, and THEN you find the race was three miles.

Even Shy's parents think RD is "pining" for Zephyr... -_-
And Zephyr still has the 12 'o clock shadow. But he is graduated is a legal mane stylist.
But that doesn't mean he can find a apartment.
I didn't like a character being dropped out of nowhere. But, I think I like the EPISODE.
I also thought the spa would be a good choice for him. His has his mane up in a man bun by the way. He's not detached from reality, but he's kind of self important
My impression from the episode was that the other members of the Mane Six, Rainbow Dash especially, did know about Zephyr. Still, yes, he could have been foreshadowed much better.
Are you always going to put a twist at the end? I mean, if you like the episode, could you mention some of the things that you liked about it as well, because for the most part, you've been listing the gripes you had. Immediately following that up with something like, "but I like it, though" is kind of confusing.
Also, I actually found that Fluttershy having a major problem with her brother to be believable. Mainly because family bonds are very much different from friendships and the like. Many people act differently towards family than they do towards anyone else.
Lastly, about that comparison you made between Zephyr and Fluttershy's animals...yeah, that doesn't really work. The animals that she takes care of depend on her to keep order. As shown in the Season 3 finale, without her everything would kinda go in a weird direction (and now I'm imagining an uprising by the woodland creatures...okay...) . Zephyr on the other hand depended on...just about anyone else to do everything for him. As you probably know by now, what Fluttershy meant is that he never personally did anything on his own. He always had someone else do whatever he was supposed to do.
Anyway, I know that I liked the episode. I liked the references, I liked the lesson, I liked the cameos and references, and Fluttershy's relationship with her brother. I agree with you, though. Throwing in a random sibling that wasn't even hinted at before was a pretty bad move. That, and I wish that Applejack should've had acrack at him.
Repetition like this ticks off me as a story teller.

Same here. I thought that it was fairly obvious that the rest of the Mane 6 knew about Fluttershy's brother, unlike Twilight's surprise brother. Granted, the audience didn't know about her brother so it still just seems like another sibling out of nowhere.

To be fair, Pinkie tends to talk rather loudly, they weren't paying attention, and AJ whistling is LOUD.
Yeah, I was torn on my opinion on the guy, one one hand, he was pretty funny, but moments like that were just him being a bit of a prick, as you so eloquently put it. Goodness knows if he'd tried to pull the same stunt with my LEGOs for example, I don't think I'd have taken it nearly as well.
To an extent, and to be fair, it's a very hard thing to do, not having your parents whom you've known all your life, not having that safety net.
Bit of both I'd say.
Agred, kinda want Discord and Zephyr to interact since, out of touch as Zephyr is, might be interesting to see him react to the "Evil Lord of Chaos" only for Discord to tell him that he's reformed and he's a bit of a dick at worst now.

Fluttershy's talent is communicating with animals on a higher level, they may get the basic gist of what the other is saying, but not to the extent Shy understands.

The explanation for why Fluttershy reacted to her brother differently than others, especially Discord, it's simple: She's known her brother longer, so he ticks her off more.
For me, this is Fluttershy's best episode of the series.
And while it's not as good as Newbie Dash, both are among the best of the season.

Thanks for the review, I'm not sure if you actually write them as you watch it minute by minute, but either way I appreciate your unique style.
You made me realize Fluttershy's brother is like Discord without the powers. Irritable bum who moves into Fluttershy's home and embarrasses her by annoying everyone else? Check.
I think the other ponies knew about the Flutter Brother, they just didn't bring him up because they know discussing him irritates Fluttershy. It actually felt true to life how Fluttershy treated him. Besides the fact that she has grown more assertive over time, in my personal experience I have found that there are many adults who act in a totally different manner towards their siblings than they do towards everyone else on the planet. At least the parents were fairly likable, I hope we see them again.
That thing with Angel and the gnome seemed like a really subtle historical reference. Australia used to make fake rabbit dummies and put them in rabbit holes to make rabbits think they had mating partners, to decrease the rabbit population.
