And looking back, I noticed that you mentioned this already. Disregard!

Given that Ant Mill will have been studying literature for at least two years before doing anything professionally with it, the modern Equestria seems likely plagued by the problem of needing extensive higher education before being able to get a reasonable idea of what someone of that education actually does. Makes it a bit difficult to find out what one really wants to do, unless they guess right early on. I imagine many of them give up looking before finding out and just settle for the last thing they studied.

Meaning many ponies are only as good as their education.

Which pretty much anyone can get.

In the Equestria Twilight was born to, everyone had a gift and a calling. By Ant Mill's supposed age, ponies would have long since found that calling and have started doing something with it. It was just a given. I wonder how true that can be in the modern Equestria.

I mean, her cutie mark is literally a symbol for futility and death.

She may be closer to her special talent then she realizes.

She has a cutie mark? I just assumed she was blank.

She is, actually. That's an aspect of the story I didn't consider at length while writing it, but now that you point it out, ponies in the modern world probably don't get their cutie marks until much later in life. That would be an interesting story inof itself.

But, no. I was just riffing on her name. "Ant Mill." Name defines your destiny and all that.
